I love Mass Effect and everything that comes with the name...but will
someone explain to me the holographic Omni-blade? In every science
fiction setting I know, holograms are simply images with no physical
substance. It seems silly to me to stab someone with light...
This
won't be a game breaker and it'll probably be explained in the
extensive codex but maybe a fellow bioware worshipper can explain it.
Holographic Blade?

I wondered the same thing, but when you mention stabbing someone with light I can't help but think of Star Wars.. LOL

I'd recommend checking out this eariler threat on the same subject: Please explain: Tangible light as a Weapon?

Have you seen it actually stabbing anything? I don't think it's quite capable of slicing anything.

Remember the solid holograms on Pinnacle Station? They used kinetic barriers to make them solid.

So much talk about the omni-blade. Making tangible things out of light! Oh noes!
Was there this much chatter about the Shadow Broker's omni-shield? They're essentially the same thing...

Ok, gonna explain it here like I've explained it in other places. This explanation is also the one the Devs gave on one of thier twitter account.
The "blade" thats actually used to stab works the same as Omni gel did in ME1. The omni tools have micro manufacturing plants within them. They break down materials and then can reassemble them in the desired shape.
The stabby bit is assembled every time Shep activates it, and then de-assembles when not in use. They described what material it is in a far more fancy style but thats the gist of it.

What people mean by the word "hologram" has nothing to do with an actual hologram anyway, so I don't see a problem here.
It's probably same tech as tech armor.

Can you explain combat drones?
Its sci-fi, and yeah it might be too edgy for some of the crowd on the forums, but it got a great response from E3, plus the blade isn't for all classes. Biotics have a biotic attack, and other classes (I'm not sure which one) have an "omni-punch" persay.

Which means that a wizard made it.Aedolon wrote...

What surprises me is that the same people who ask these 'how is it possible' questions are just as skilled at constructing a possible answer when the questions are being asked by others.
Here's another question: if one's the smarter, is one the one who spots the hole that the fools are blind to, or the one who fixes the hole that a fool has created blindly?

It confused me as well, at first. Let's get one thing out of the way, though: It's not a lightsaber. A lightsaber is pure energy, whereas the omni-tool and omni-blade appear to be holographic projections (light, in other words).
Somebody in other thread explained (their theory behind?) the technology beautifully. To put it simply, the actual blade is thin enough to be microscopic, and the projection from the omni-tool is there as a convenience out of practicality for the user to see the blade. They explained it better, I think...

Omni Blade works under the same principle reasons that you can type on the omni tool, shoot fire from the omni tool, cause a big electrical spark from the omni tool, form a shield from an omni tool and so on.
It fabricates things and then highlights them with a techy glow

Omniblades seem to have an in-lore explanation given the ME universe's technology, and is actually pretty cool. See the link below.
Unfortunately, it's being described very poorly in the interviews and looks really silly, like a weapon out of TRON. Here's hoping that gets rectified.

Kinetic bariers yeah? Just like Tech Armor and the Brokers shield.

IIRC one of the devs said it was something along the lines of a mono diamond filament that and charged with a ME field.
