Or one has but to look for the local hometown hero who happens to be a woman and in uniform fighting for her country. American, Canadian, British, Dutch, Australian, Polish, Russian,.. doesn't matter what nationality. Lots or REAL women have fought and served.

What I especially like is that we can see what REAL female soldiers look like. And when I look at these REAL female soldiers and compare them to most of you people's femSheps, I see some interesting differences.
1) REAL female soldiers don't look pretty wearing make-up and lipstick.
2) REAL female soldiers have short hair or they have their hair like Ashley has in ME1 or ME2.
So BioWare please, if you're going to give femShep a default face, please pleas PLEASE make her look like a REAL soldier and not a pretty make-up-wearing photomodel like most of these guy's custom femSheps.

Gina Carano is an mma martial artist, dude. Regardless of size, gender, background, weight, whatever, it is utterly stupid to shove aside any mma martial artist as 'weak' due to precoceptions.

1) A universal statement you can't possibly back up. Athletic women with more muscle tone can absolutely be pretty wearing makeup and lipstick.
2) So military women have short or long hair. OK.
I'm not advocating Bioware uses a model who weighs slightly over 100 lbs like Olivia Wilde but a woman like Gina Carano more than qualifies as a very athletic woman who is also really hot.

This is a good suggestion. Strong enough jaw to be a badass, vague in ethnicity, and good looking.
My first thought was Gina Carano actually, but I didn't find a good pic. And I've been watching Supernatural recently, so the Ruby character reminded me of Gina and found a decent pic of the actress.
So here's a decent one of Gina:
Edit: fixing link.
I agree. She's hot and she can fight

There are lots of examples or real life female warriors. The Russian military is well known in this regard, especially during WWII. Lots of snipers, pilots, etc. The Israeli IDF also has lots of women due to its conscription/draft policy to ensure a large number of reserves at any given time during a conflict. Lots of nations are well ahead of the U.S. in regards to women in combat roles though the U.S. is playing catch up and in a battlezone with no real front line, the conflicts in the Middle East often propel women into frontline combat despite offical policy.

Just ignore people who claim to know what "real soldiers" look like, or how they behave. The most these speculators know is what they watch in Saturday morning cartoon shows. This forum is flooded with people who claim that they know what a "real" soldier is like.

I understand that. It just bugs me that since soldiers wear uniform, people think that the soldiers themselves must be uniform too.

I'm happy for the both of them. They just got home from tour roughly a week ago, so it's good that they have some downtime for themselves now.

To be fair, I think all he meant was women preparing to go on patrol don't prepare the same way they would for a ladies night out to some club back home. I can't speak for this person of course but that's just my ssumption.
Back when I was in the U.S. Navy in the mid-90's was when the U.S. military first started opening up some roles for women, like women in combat aircraft, on warships, etc. Lots of very corporate sexual harrassment training and such but not much changed really. They did their job just like anyone else, as it should be.

Euhm, just look at any article about real-life female soldiers and see for yourself (for example, the articles that Yakko77 posted).
MOST real female soldiers don't have long hair and if they do, they wear it like Ashley when they're on duty. MOST real female soldiers don't wear make-up while on duty and if they do, they mostly only wear a bit of eyeliner.
Sorry, no saturday morning cartoons, just real-life.

It's understandable. It's sort of like a converstion Wrex and Ash can have while on a elevator in ME1 where Wrex asks Ash about human women and their role in the human military. It's a touchy subject to this day. Generally speaking, men are used to protecting and looking out for women. Again, that is a very broad generalization but overall I think a lot of men see it as somewhat unnatural for women to be in combat roles. As for myself, so long as they are trained and capable, I see no reason they shouldn't be able top carry out their patriotic duty alongside the men.

Well, it can be both in a way. Have you seen some of the women in the IDF for example? WOWZA!!!!
As with anything, there are plenty of not so pretty, average and exceptionally beautiful women in any military. I do see what you're going for I think. Femshep should be practical and normal looking with less focus on how good looking she is but this is the video game industry and lots of attention is still given to "fan service". Hopefully the character creator in ME3 will enable us to make our femshep look the part we all see fit.

I agree entirely. The women in my family have a habit of taking care of themselves or taking on roles that aren't traditional to females. Four of my cousins are in the military; three of them are women. My mother runs her own company. I myself have been doing marital arts/mma for twelve years and fight regularly every other weeked (screws with my job otherwise.) That being said, I like wearing high heels, make-up, and nice dresses as much as the next woman.
So yeah "REAL female soldiers look like THIS," hit a soft spot.

You know... you're right.
As for me, I gave up on femShep halfway through ME1. Nothing wrong with femShep and nothing wrong with Jennifer Hale, really. But as a man I simply could not identify with femShep. I like to see the hero's I create and play as an extension of myself. My characters reflect a part of who I am in real-life. I'm a man, a manly man. So playing a femShep wasn't really playing an exstension of myself. That's why I personally gave up on femShep.

Sorry if I offended you. All I tried to say is that while on-duty, putting on make-up should be the least of your concern. Most women don't wear much make-up while on active duty, a lot don't wear any make-up at all while on active duty.
No doubt that these women look pretty with make-up and dresses in their free time, but WHILE ON ACTIVE DUTY I'm pretty sure they could care less about make-up.
