For those not in the know, Icewind Gate 2 runs the Baldur's Gate 2 game files on the Icewind Dale 2 game engine. The two games have broadly similar formats for their files, even though BG 2 uses the Second Edition D&D rules while ID 2 uses the Third Edition. Presumably the translation is handled by the installation of Icewind Gate.
Note: to play the Icewind Gate mod you need both of the games installed on the same drive.

For all I know, BG 1 could be run on the ID 2 engine. I don't have the game and I have never played it. I figure that you would need to write a special version of Icewind Gate to run BG 1. I lack the programming skills to do this.
