That being said, what are some games that have really disappointed you.
(Yes, if you want to mention Dragon Age II, go ahead but can we please try to not let that become the focus on this entire thread? Thanks)
Here are a few that come to mind for me.
-Doom 3. The game looked like it was going to be scary as Hell and incredibly action packed. The game was lauded for it's graphics but the problem is that almost every level with the exception of Hell(definetly the high point of the game) looked nearly identical. Plus the spawning enemies became predictable and boring.
The lack of lighting throughout the game was more frustrating than scary. It's like Doom 3 couldn't decide whether it wanted to be an action game or survival horror game but it didn't tackle either of those genres well.
-Alan Wake. The game basically took one decent idea with using light as a weapon and tediously dragged it throughout a boring, repetitive, linear action game that gave you the false sense of freedom. I was so looking forward to this one too since I liked the Max Payne games.
-Final Fantasy VIII. I just could never get into the junction system and I hated having to draw magic. I found the storyline to be overly sappy and melodramatic and I preferred the art direction and characters in Final Fantasy VII, VI, V, and IV. I lost interest in the Final Fantasy series after this game even though I have tried all the subsequent releases.
Xenosaga(series)-Why couldn't they have just made a sequel to Xenogears? These games SUCK and they try to fix something that wasn't broken to begin with. Xenogears was GREAT! Why in the Hell did they decide to reinvent the whole thing before even giving it time to develop into a franchise?
-Everything from Rare post 2004. They backstabbed Nintendo by releasing a HORRIBLE sequel to Perfect Dark on the 360 as a launch title and they haven't done anything worthwhile since. Go to Hell you traitors!
-Metal Gear Solid 2. You know, I could've even forgiven Konami for making Raiden the main character had the underlying plot not been such a convoluted, mess that took the franchise to pluto. It seems like the game's storyline is trying so hard to convince you about how damn brilliant it is.
-Fable. I remember back when this game was called Project Ego and it was touted as more than just a fantasy action RPG, but a life simulator. Turns out these social elements like marriage, aging, laws all felt tacked on and shallow. I honestly believe that Fable would've been no better or worse if it really were just a generic fantasy RPG. At least it wouldn't feel as pretentious.
-Quake IV. Should've been more like Quake III arena which really could use a followup. Remember the days when Unreal Tournament and Quake were rivals? I want those days to return!
-Tresspasser. Absolute, utter trash. Worst control I have ever seen in a game. Hugely hyped for it's graphics but as it turns out even the most powerful computer at the time could not run it and the gameplay was completely broken and unplayable.
A lot of games I have anticipated have dissappointed me but this one turned out to be one of the worst games I have ever played.
-Alundra 2. I actually liked this one but it had absolutely NO business calling itself Alundra 2. It had nothing, absolutely nothing at all to do with the first game other than being an action RPG. There weren't even subtle references like chocobos or airships like we see in the Final Fantasy series.
-Dreamcast Collection. The Dreamcast is my favorite console of all time but Sega could've made a much better compillation than this one. Instead of 4 games it should of had 8 games and they should have been.
Jet Grind Radio
Sega Marine Fishing(better than bass fishing)
Jet Grind Radio(shocked this didn't make it)
Skies of Arcadia
Sonic Adventure 2(way better than the first game)
Alienfront Online
Seaman
Ecco the Dolphin
(I left out Shenmue I and II because those should be in their own compillation)
-Knights of the Old Republic II. Obviously rushed to the market. Huge waste of potential by Obsidian who are a great company really.
-Deus Ex Human Revolution. Not as bad as some people say but it had some seriously poor design choices, biggest mistake was getting rid of the skill system, second biggest mistake was universal ammo. The game did give the player more direct influence over the storyline which was nice as I had always wondered what would happen had JC Denton actually decided to not help his brother before leaving for Hong Kong.
The game doesn't deserve to be as heavily reviled as it is but it is definetly a dissapointing sequel.
