A lot of us have played bad games but when you see a turd and play with it you should expect to feel dirty.  It's quite another feeling to lick the frosting off an oreo in anticipation of the chocolate wafers only to accidentally drop them in the toilet.

That being said, what are some games that have really disappointed you.

(Yes, if you want to mention Dragon Age II, go ahead but can we please try to not let that become the focus on this entire thread?   Thanks)

Here are a few that come to mind for me.

-Doom 3. The game looked like it was going to be scary as Hell and incredibly action packed.  The game was lauded for it's graphics but the problem is that almost every level with the exception of Hell(definetly the high point of the game) looked nearly identical.  Plus the spawning enemies became predictable and boring.
The lack of lighting throughout the game was more frustrating than scary.  It's like Doom 3 couldn't decide whether it wanted to be an action game or survival horror game but it didn't tackle either of those genres well.

-Alan Wake.  The game basically took one decent idea with using light as a weapon and tediously dragged it throughout a boring, repetitive, linear action game that gave you the false sense of freedom.  I was so looking forward to this one too since I liked the Max Payne games.

-Final Fantasy VIII.  I just could never get into the junction system and I hated having to draw magic.  I found the storyline to be overly sappy and melodramatic and I preferred the art direction and characters in Final Fantasy VII, VI, V, and IV.  I lost interest in the Final Fantasy series after this game even though I have tried all the subsequent releases.

Xenosaga(series)-Why couldn't they have just made a sequel to Xenogears?  These games SUCK and they try to fix something that wasn't broken to begin with.  Xenogears was GREAT!   Why in the Hell did they decide to reinvent the whole thing before even giving it time to develop into a franchise?

-Everything from Rare post 2004.  They backstabbed Nintendo by releasing a HORRIBLE sequel to Perfect Dark on the 360 as a launch title and they haven't done anything worthwhile since.  Go to Hell you traitors!

-Metal Gear Solid 2.  You know, I could've even forgiven Konami for making Raiden the main character had the underlying plot not been such a convoluted, mess that took the franchise to pluto.  It seems like the game's storyline is trying so hard to convince you about how damn brilliant it is.

-Fable.  I remember back when this game was called Project Ego and it was touted as more than just a fantasy action RPG, but a life simulator.  Turns out these social elements like marriage, aging, laws all felt tacked on and shallow.  I honestly believe that Fable would've been no better or worse if it really were just a generic fantasy RPG.  At least it wouldn't feel as pretentious.

-Quake IV.  Should've been more like Quake III arena which really could use a followup.  Remember the days when Unreal Tournament and Quake were rivals?  I want those days to return!

-Tresspasser.  Absolute, utter trash.  Worst control I have ever seen in a game.  Hugely hyped for it's graphics but as it turns out even the most powerful computer at the time could not run it and the gameplay was completely broken and unplayable.
A lot of games I have anticipated have dissappointed me but this one turned out to be one of the worst games I have ever played.

-Alundra 2.  I actually liked this one but it had absolutely NO business calling itself Alundra 2.  It had nothing, absolutely nothing at all to do with the first game other than being an action RPG.  There weren't even subtle references like chocobos or airships like we see in the Final Fantasy series.

-Dreamcast Collection.  The Dreamcast is my favorite console of all time but Sega could've made a much better compillation than this one.  Instead of 4 games it should of had 8 games and they should have been.

Jet Grind Radio
Sega Marine Fishing(better than bass fishing)
Jet Grind Radio(shocked this didn't make it)
Skies of Arcadia
Sonic Adventure 2(way better than the first game)
Alienfront Online
Seaman
Ecco the Dolphin

(I left out Shenmue I and II because those should be in their own compillation)

-Knights of the Old Republic II.  Obviously rushed to the market.  Huge waste of potential by Obsidian who are a great company really.

-Deus Ex Human Revolution. Not as bad as some people say but it had some seriously poor design choices, biggest mistake was getting rid of the skill system, second biggest mistake was universal ammo.  The game did give the player more direct influence over the storyline which was nice as I had always wondered what would happen had JC Denton actually decided to not help his brother before leaving for Hong Kong.
The game doesn't deserve to be as heavily reviled as it is but it is definetly a dissapointing sequel.

-Resident Evil 5. Solid game, but after 4 I was expecting much better. Wesker was cool, though.
-Xenosaga 2. Hated it.
-Borderlands. Very good while it lasted, but I got bored quickly.
-Gears of War 2 multiplayer.

Not true, I own the Xbox version, a legitimate copy mind you and Deus Ex Human Revolution came out before digital distribution was as widespread and easy as it is today.

Are you talking about Invisible War? Cause HR is not coming out until end of August.

I am afraid my greatest disappointment of late was in fact DA2. Lot's of flaws there as discussed in length.

I usually inform myself very thoroughly before I play games so I didn't have too many disappointments.

Bought Borderlands on Steam sale a while back and it wasn't very good but for 5 bucks I am not really disappointed.

Just finished Witcher 2 and while it is a terrific game, the end was very disappointing. I am hoping for a big add-on there.

I bet the ending to the Xbox 360 version of The Witcher 2 will be better. CD Projekt probably felt that being a PC exclusive nobody was going to buy it anyways so they got lazy and gave up.

I'm glad that the development team behind Deus Ex Human Revolution is following the model of gameplay seen in the first Deus Ex and trying to learn from the mistakes of Deus Ex Human Revolution.

The Force Unleashed. I like Star Wars games, but this was utter crap. It recycled maps heavily, had tacky lightsaber moves, and the force wasn't very cool. The Jedi vs Jedi fights were terrible because they didn't get unique animations and the camera was zoom out so far I couldn't see what I was actually doing. The only good parts were the finishing moves and taking down a Star Destroyer.

DA2. It was decent relative to other games, but is terrible relative to DA:O.

The Legend of Zelda 2, that was such a let down because they changed it to a clumsy side scroller with little guidance as to what was going on.

You mean Invisible War, Turnip. In regard to HR, it seems pretty damn polished so far, and retains the feel and design philosophy of the first game. I have high hopes for it.

It's late and I still think Duke Nukem Forever was worth the the 14 year development time despite the tepid reviews so I hope nobody mentions that game because they're not old enough to have the nostalgic drive to forgive Duke Nukem Forever for it's mild flaws.

A true Duke fan will deal with any number of setbacks just so long as they get to play as Duke and if I have to wait 14 more years for the next Duke Nukem game so be it,.

I think when it comes to Dragon Age II many of the criticisms are legitimate but most Mass Effect 2 criticism seems to just be a bunch of PC gamers crying about how the game is too console centric, still not willing to concede that nobody in this industry, not even CDProjekt cares about them anymore.

I'm a little worried.  PC gamers are so jealous that console gamers get more attention from the industry that they may just post massive spoilers of the game from the leaked copy they all downloaded just to get back at us for being better customers.

They really should be more greatful.  If we were like them and never bought our games then they would never get their crappy, rushed PC ports of our console games to torrent to begin with.

Seriously Mr. Root, you have a pc yourself. Give up the crusade. Games are great on pc, and yes, console market will always recieve more attention, but so what?

Master of Orion 3: Turn-based. Horrible game. Too much management. Too much to do each turn. Every time I hit the turn button I cringed on what I'd need to do next.

Mass Effect 2. No, really. Mass Effect 2.

Mind you, I DID get it for free after registering my copy of Dragon Age 2, but I was told it was a RPG. I start up the game and find a third-person shooter. I died twice on the second mission just because I couldn't figure out how to turn the film grain effect off so I could see.

Sorry, guys, false advertising.

(Feel free to take that with a small caveat: I STILL haven't gotten to play the original Mass Effect, so I had no idea what the h377 I was getting myself into...)

Well it has always been advertised as a Shooter-RPG, the shooting is a big element to the combat. And this is just me, but I have trouble even noticing the film grain, so I still don't understand when people complain/praise about. Also, another tip for players that aren't so hot at shooters is to use the power-pause feature to line up shots so that you can hit people more often (not saying you're bad at shooters, just a tip because you mentioned trouble aiming because of the film grain).

The RPG portions are definetely there, the only thing with ME2 is you have to get through about 2-3 missions before they are really apparent. This is mainly because without a crew to interact with (and the missions involve recruiting the crew for the most part) you don't have anyone to talk to. If your definition of a roleplying game heavily involves leveling up/skill selection to affect every part of combat, then it's not as deep as some would like. The skills can be evolved, and you can pick special abilities unique to different classes, etc., but the shooting element is not affected by skill point distribution at all. Equipment-wise they consolidated all of the guns from Mass Effect 1 into a few guns from each category (some would say too few). There are other points I could mention, but now I feel like I'm rambling/preaching (sorry ).

Overall though, I would like to say that Mass Effect 2 is an RPG, but more specifically: a Shooter-RPG. If you haven't played through the story, I would definitely recommend you push your self to finish it. Or, better yet, buy Mass Effect 1 cheap and play that first as it is a nice intro (it is far more reliant on "traditional" RPG mechanics) to shooters. Plus I know for a fact you can turn off film grain in Mass Effect 1. :D

Mass Effect 2 was really disappointing for me as well. I had really enjoyed every other BioWare RPG until that point, besides the original Mass Effect and NWN(which I haven't played yet). It was perhaps due to unreasonable expectations. I played SW: KotOR and DA:O several times before ME2 came out, so I figured that Mass Effect was a promising idea that had a misstep. And that everything would be fixed up in ME2.

I think Mass Effect 2 made me hate mini-games. I didn't mind them when playing SW: KotOR or even Jade Empire. But after ME2, I loathed playing the mini-games in SW: KotOR and even Fallout 3. Everytime I see a mini-game now, I just want to rage at the developers.

Sorry guys, but in the case of ME2, if you only read one article about it or looked at the BW forums for 5 minutes, it would have been very clear what it was. To expect a KotOR after ME1 is just a bit unreasonable IMO.
