He is an Alliance soldier. You are not allowed to have long hair as a safety precaution if you are male. Women must have short hair or wear it in tied up.

Untrue, i was in the army and there were plenty of guys with long hair, one of them even had to wear a bun... Hehe. And besides shepard is an officer and my shep. is a freelancer, He'll wear his hair any way he pleases. Don't like long hair? fine don't use it

Was he on active duty? I could be wrong on this or maybe it's because I've only ever seen soldier like this and in pics were they're hair is short for males. Is it you're active so cut it and if you're not deployed it's ok long? I know the girls can have it pulled up though.

Now you can say that the Mass Effect series isn't really realistic, but it TRIES to be as realistic as possible for a sci-fi space opera universe. Long hair and a militairy hero just don't go together.

Lets throw Femshep, Ashley and Miranda out the airlock then for not following realism.  <_<

Different militaries have different standards. Some European countries let their soldiers have longer hair, US keeps everyone's hair short (except for Delta because they need them to blend in to the populace in afganistan)

BUD... It's a video game set 150 years in the future. No offense but I can wear my hair however long I ****ing want. N7 is also something I would equate to Delta Squad in modern times, which have no "hair code" so boom goes the dynamite.

I already addressed this, femshep has long hair so she has more options that girls would actually like if she were real military she would keep her hair in a bun all the time like ash did originally. I hate how miranda and ME3
Ash they look like super models pretending to be soldiers

This. Not only is it a video game but Shepard's a goddamn Spectre. He should be able to have his hair anyway he wants.

And anyone dumb enough to get in melee distance of Shepard is probably dead already. And if not they will be soon. Only thing grabbing Shep's hair will do will is ****** him off.

Okay so I guess Ash should cut her hair too right? She's in the military and is running around with it free.

1. She is female.
2. She has it in a bun so it isn't in the way.
3. Before you even go mehememeheme over the five seconds of her having her hair down, remember we don't know what she was doing before hand.

Edit: Also she keeps it in a bun even during sex.  Alliance: has this sh*t on regulatory lockdown.

The reason females can have longer hair is because they are barred from combat positions.

Delta only lets their operatives have long hair is to blend in to the populave at afganistan. Once they come home it's a shave and a haircut for them

Was catching up on Twitter and noticed this, for anyone who may have missed it or doesn't know

"Yep, we have some new tech that allows us to make the old hair look better and add ones we haven't been able to do before."

Whether these are long or not is unknown. But the fact that both textures and new styles have been confirmed is great

As i've said afore i just want a nice shaven skull that I can smash repeatedly into peoples noses until blood, cartilige and snot are dripping down into my eyes, so long as I get that i'll be happy if they give everybody else the option of being an androgynous little emo justin beiber clone.

Except we really don't want ponytails do we, I mean lift any ponytail and you'll always find an arse hole.

Some makeup is permitted in the military. Long hair, in the manner the topic suggests, isn't though.

Shepard's not in the military anymore.

As for the military does the alliance forbid long hair? Ash's hair seems to be fine. (Though she like Shepard is a Spectre so it probably doesn't apply for either of them).

Shepard may not be in he military any more depending on your choices, but if you're ever been around any career military veterans, very few things from their time of service change when it comes to their appearance.  Men very rarely grow their hair out again after keeping it short in the military for however many years.

And who's going to cut his hair on the Normandy? Last time I checked there weren't any barbers onboard. Months of flying around in space can make a man look like a Yes roadie.

He can cut his own damn hair, it isn't that hard.  I just cut mine 10 minutes ago.  Though if my thinning spot gets much thinner I'll be shaving my head and not cutting my hair.

Though honeslty they already screwed logic in this regard in ME2, heels and long hair, who needs armor etc.  So why not let me go Ronald McDonald hair?  I'll think its epically lame, just like I think Miranda catsuits are lame and Jack suspenders are lame but I don't have to pick the hair style at least.  Jack etc. is kind of forced on you.

And Samara.  Pretty sure Mordin too.

There are a lot bigger issues for realism to be nitpicked than Shep having longer hair seriously

It was pre-deployment during training, he wore a hair net, although most of us shaved our heads for solidarity and praticality, there were harsh codes considering facial hair so if the argument is "because it is not allowed" than we would be left with 3 hairstyles and no facial hair.

I have no objections to getting longer hairstyles for male Shepards. I won't be using them myself as I don't think it fits, but more options is never a bad thing.

Uh uh uh, long hair, yeah!! I want my Shepard to have a silky smooth hair like this one:

Image IPB

Besides, I see no reason why male Shep can't have a long hair. He is (was) a Spectre, the first human one, so I don't think the Council had any kind of policy about that sort of stuff. And now, after Arrival, being a rogue Spectre and a genocide to batarians and humans, there should be no ties to any of those institutional conventions (other than habits, which is something personal), then we can wear our hair as we want.

YEAH!!!

I have to agree with this part.  They threw out the realism  when they brought in Miranda, gave Ash uplift and got rid of helmets.  Helmets save lives.

I probably wouldn't give my Shepard a short ponytail but I wouldn't give him a beard either.  I have no problem having the option.  Besides, my Shepard is a Spectre, left the alliance though he still has friends there.
