Yes but he's in an alliance court as opposed to a civilian court so to everyone shepard is military. AS for long hair doesn't seem feasible as it would get in the way of the helmet seal when the armor doubles as a space suit.
Also what if short hair is in fashion and shepard wants to fit in? :P

Again I want to see where Shep ever gives a damn what the alliance thinks.

Also: Ashley, Miranda and FemShep already have long hair. Dude Shep joining the crew isn't that big of a deal.

Then Shepard can have short hair. That's why it's optional baby. B)

Now you can say that the Mass Effect series isn't really realistic, but it TRIES to be as realistic as possible for a sci-fi space opera universe. Long hair and a militairy hero just don't go together.

Lets throw Femshep, Ashley and Miranda out the airlock then for not following realism.  <_<

Jep, every Femshep with longer hair than Ash had in ME1 and ME2 is not following realism. Same goes for Ashley in Mass Effect 3.

I really wonder why BioWare decided to turn realistic Ashley into unrealistic wannabe super-model Ashley in ME3. I'm totally not  supporting the decision of turning Ashley into a fake wannabe super-model, but I won't make a huge deal out of it either.

Also, manly space marines and long hair just don't go together. Manly space marines go with short hair, or no hair at all. That's the MANLY way, if you're a space marine that is.

Look at Warhammer 40k. every single Space Marine in w40k has short hair or no hair (with the exception of the God Emperor of Mankind).
Look at Starcraft, every single Terran Marine has short hair or no hair.
Look at Mass Effect so far, every single Alliance marine we've seen so far has short hair or no hair.

Shepard with long hair would be awkward to say the least. The longest haircut that's acceptable for a manly marine in my opinion, is the haircut of Jimmy Raynor (Starcraft 2).

This, anything longer is simply g...*ahum*... unmanly.

I was at a party today and i said the f word (not the curse word). This little kid looked at me and asked what I'd said then somebody said to him "we don't say that." I felt so bad lol.

On topic, I have a question. Is long hair professional? Shepard isn't Rambo or Chuck: some nut just killing people. Shepard is the Alliance, and indeed humanity's, message to the world, saying that the humans can be taken seriously, that they are equals with the other species. And do you really really take people with long hair seriously? I don't have long hair (impossible for me to, unless an afro counts as long hair, and afros are beyond stupid) but I haven't seen anyone who could really be taken seriously as an intelligent person (something a Spectre would definately need) with long hair. In fact most people I've seen with long hair look like...well, hippies.

Not to say all are; that group includes an uncle who's played the piano around the world and currently resides in Las Vegas playing. He doesn't have it (long hair) anymore but boy did he look stupid.

What kind of question is this?  Taking people with long hair seriously?  Really? We even have this question?  Do some people really think having longer hair makes that person stupid?  Oh I cut my beard last week i must be smarter now!

How about mass effect one where no matter what you choose the Alliance benefits? Please don't bring ME3 ashley and miranda into this cuz I absolutley hate what Bioware did there (Super models don't belong on the battle field) Instead look at ME1 Ashley always kept it shoulder length or shorter and ALWAYS had it in a bun as the military mandates.

I want more longer hairstyles. The only hair that's even close to the length of mine is the weird stringy one.

Apologies for the ever increasing quotes.

My question was whether it is professional. I don't think having long hair makes someone stupid (I thought I was showing that with my last couple sentences but I guess not) but it doesn't seem very professional. Think about it: how many soldiers, politicians, etc. (Shepard is both, as a Spectre) with long hair? I don't claim to be well versed in this but I don't recall seeing very many.

Miranda is a civilian, and women are allowed to have long hair in the military. It is a bit of a double standard I suppose, but they are allowed to have longer hair because extremely short hair on women would be considered eccentric or gender-bending.

Women in the US military just have to wear their hair in buns when on duty and in uniform, which is pretty much what Ashley did in the first two games.

aren't females forbidden from being on the front lines? Isn't that why their hair can be longer?

And plus the future. Maybe they decided it's okay for both genders as long as the hair is tied up. Most guys just prefer to cut it.

Plus FemShep's hair isn't always in a bun. She has shoulder length hair out and no one says a word.

Plus at the end of the day this is a video game. If you don't like the long hair you don't have to have Shepard with it.

Choices folks.

Mass effect 1 is kind of thrown at the window with people wearing heels in combat. ME1 Ashisn't in ME3. We have a screenshot where she has long flowing hair. And if it's gonna be that way it might as well be for both genders.

Alright, for those saying that long hair "can't be taken seriously" or is "foolish", "hippie-like" or "unmanly", all you're going to do is ****** off people who have long hair (like me).

To be honest, after having played ME1 and ME2 without it, I don't really "need" it. It fits better in medieval games for obvious reasons, but if Bioware's next IP doesn't have the main character as a soldier with hair regulations or whatever, long hair would be nice.

Just for reference.
Current US Navy. (well as current as my retirement) Beards are not allowed as they impede the use of emergency breathing apparatus. You can't seal the mask over the beard, allowing dangerous toxins into the faceplate.
Future Navy: Just a guess but this same reason can be extended to the wearing of a spacesuit helmet. Long hair is impractical and dangerous. Compartment breached and you have to take a few minutes to stuff your hair into the helmet to get a seal? Knowing many marines, both active duty and retired, I find hair longer than an inch unbelievable. Career Jarheads keep the short hair. :)
That said, it is a supposed role playing game, so anything goes I guess.

For all those saying Shepard is no longer part of the Alliance:

Wrong.

If I remember correctly, in ME1 during the conversation with Rear Admiral Mikhailovich, it's mentioned that Shepard is no longer part of the Alliance military since becoming Spectre.

Here's another question: would aliens care about hair length? Also, the comments you're making in general about guys with long hair is probably gonna result in people getting pissed off.

Also, if you want an example of a choice of appearance that's completely unprofessional and has already made its way into ME, check out Shepard's space pirate causal outfit in ME2. Or Miranda's catsuit. Etc.

Having long hair in the Military sucks, long periods of time without bathing and crawling threw mud and **** can lead to some sticky situations and a very itchy head.

And theres the fact that in hand to hand someone can grab your hair and pull it, the problem with human hair is that it tends to be very strong and will stay connected to your scalp till it starts to rip the skin off of your scalp, provided that there is enough hair being pulled.

Also getting your hair stuck in something can be bad for your life expectancy, or it can lead to your scalp being ripped off. And considering militaries seem to have plenty of dangerous equipment that like to snag things like hair, its a good idea to keep it short. So yea, Soldiers in the field prefer to leave it short.

I would take short hair any day, even in civilian life.
But then again this is Mass Effect, you have woman in combat running around in high heels and skimpy outfits:?. so I guess it doesn't really matter.

Still would seem strange to see male Shepard with long hair though.

I'm complaining about lack of customization for dude Shep.

His hairchoices suck.

I rather have hairchoices like DA2. No matter how much better ME2 isbetter than DA2, DA2's character customization blows ME2's out of the goddamn water.

He doesn't look quite right to me though. If there's longer hairstyles we both win.

I'm not asking for the short/bald styles to be removed. =]

With ME's crappy character creator do you really think you would be able to create a manShep that actually suits long hair?

Sorry.  I was not implying that.  Longer hair for others is fine by me.  My earlier post was just showing why BW most likely went with the shorter hair styles.  :)

I managed to make one to suit some of the crappy eye choices. (why on earth does ME CC suck so hard I'll never understand). Believe me with enough time and effort yes I will be able to create a male Shep that suits long hair. I just need the hairstyls first.

Ah I know.

I just look at my beautiful male Hawke's shoulder length hair and sigh at my Dude Hawke's short and greasystyle. :crying: My male Shep is envious.

While I doubt we'll get any hair that'll be long enough to tie into a ponytail, I would be happy to see some hair styles that exeed an inch around the back and sides (along with better texturing of course =D) and maybe some reaction to movement and biotic powers especially for the women if that's not too much to ask.

FFXI, a game from 2004 I might add, has long male hair on some models that floats upwards when casting magic.
