So the Reapers eliminate all advanced civilizations every (roughly, I assume) 50,000 years. But is that enough time for organic life to evolve and reach that advanced threshold the Reapers find suitable? I suppose they leave the cavemen and humanoid frogs alone, providing plently of time for the lesser species to reach the intellectual threshold (activating the mass relays and making home of the Citadel). And if they don't ... they just wait, I suppose. I'm not paleontologist.

One plot hole I'd like to bring up is when Shepard presents Tali's evidence to the Council. The Council quickly accepts and confirms the evidence as treason, yet all the Council does is (remotely, I assume) revoke Saren's spectre status. They could have easily summoned him for "another mission" and simply arrest him when he arrives for a "personal meeting". With C-Sec as big as it is, they should have had no trouble. — This could have prevented all troublesome events that followed in Mass Effect, providing Saren was locked up for a long time ... or executed. But who would want that?

Think about it. After being accused by someone who was determined to find any evidence they could to bring you down for a crime you did actually commit, would you willingly return to head office if they summoned you for a mission that they would not be willing ot brief you on over secure comms?

Saren may be meglomaniacal and psychotic, but he aint no fool.

As for the 50000 year point, we cant really tell for sure, as we only have our own experiences to go by in this matter. It might turn out we progressed faster than any other species. Look at the dinosaurs for instance, they had millions of years, but not the evolutionary pressures to push them into the direction they needed to go.
It could also turn out that with the right evolutionary pressures, 10000 years is enough to go from grunting caveman/frog to space faring civilisation.

Well the one prothean relic suggests man was already in cave man state while they were still in existance so who knows how much time passed between then and when the protheans went exinct.

I think the OP has the answer. They wipe out intelligent civilization. Rudimentary organisms are ignored (like cavemen and frog things). The Proteans were alive to monitor and possibly alter humans and hangar. Proteans had a settlement on Mars, however small, the Reapers executed the Martian Proteans and ignored the garden world Earth.

Why? Reapers need resources and slaves. Unintelligent beings do not make good slaves. Spacefaring civ.s provide new technology, cavemen don't. Also, extrasolar colonization exponentially increases population growth (case and point, the Krogan, post-Rachni), and a population of several trillion is much more of a resource than a few billion.

Maybe the Council did in fact try that behind the scenes, but like others have said, Saren just ignored the message.

Would have been nice though if Shepard at least got a line during the first meeting with the councial demanding Saren show up to face the charges in person if he was truly innocent.
