Seriously that makes absolutely no sense. Can anybody provide a reasonable explanation?
Why do Reapers take on the shape of the species they are created from?

Nobody can, as we basically know nothing about the Reapers, or why they feel the need to troll organic species every 50000 years. We might learn some more about them in ME3, we might not.

Maybe it's just a side effect of using organics to create more giant killer robots. Could also be used as a terror tactic, maybe they think seeing a giant robohuman would be scarier to the troops then a giant robocrab. Or maybe theyre just adding insult to injury.

Its probably just a way of remembering each race, or perhaps they mean it as an insult to the race.
Also its just EDI's guess, the endshot of ME2 showed a lot of reapers that look alike. And if only one new Reaper is born every 50k years that should be an indicator of something.
Perhaps the Human-Reaper was made as it is because of Shepard. he beat Sovereign/Nazara and the reapers are now intrigued by humankind

The squid-like exterior all Reaper's appear as is an outter shell...the real Reapers themselves are inside them....like a pilot inside a fighter.
