I still don't understand why people expect to be able to randomly kill any npc in a game at any time where you're not playing a character stated to be violently insane....

Perhaps "violently insane" ought to be a fourth personality set on the conversation wheel. Of course, it would lead to a rather short game since everyone important ends up with a dagger in their eye.

when it was happening when I played it, I wanted the choice to kill the three of them before it happened, where was THAT choice, if I could have killed the three of them everything would have been fine

I dunno someone should have killed merdith long ago, if you had a chance to kill a tyrant irl and might be at the cost of your life, would you do it? I would

Sigh. It is both magic and gunpowder, people; the saltpeter and sulfur are part of the recipe. The ingredients deliberately recall the real life composition of gunpowder to foreshadow and hint at the true nature of the bomb Anders is making.

you know if the game was only out a month or two i'd agree but at some point you got to stop yelling spoiler every time someone asks a question about the game, its rather childish

Sorry, but that's not the way the Bioware forums have "ever" worked. You can't go on the DA:O forum and post spoilers in the no-spoilers sections, a year later.

It was expected to avoid spoilers in the NWN plots YEARS after the fact on the old forum.

It's a reasonable request to expect someone to read the header to the forum they post in.

But in any case, since this is IN the Spoiler section now, it's fair to guess that Justice managed to disclose the secret of Black Powder to Anders. Quite possibly no magic involved, especially since Templars are watching.

I take it this thread used to be in another forum, as this one allows spoilers regardless.
Anders' shopping list is shorthand for BOOOOOMMM! because magic doesn't need science. Or, because Anders does all that **** behind the scenes - he has to fool us so we don't stop him, since we're apparently dolts who can't deduce the obvious.

On a tangent, it would be interesting if the Circle taught some chemistry as a kind of curiosity, dismissing its potential when compared to chanting a few words or pointing a staff.

In my Headcanon, Anders needed no stinkin' bomb, he walked into the Chantry and Vengence flattened the damn place WITH HIS MIND-BULLETS.

Because then it's horrible, but also TOTALLY AWESOME. I am a bad person.

Just because they are reminiscent of the real-life ingredients for foreshadowing doesn't necessarily mean they are actually saltpeter and sulfur. I would think it would be a pretty big deal if the qunari's closely guarded secret escaped (assuming their gunpowder is the same as real life gunpowder). I suspect he used a Tevinter magic bomb recipe (the way he talked about it being a "Tevinter potion" being only half untrue), which would make it even more of a big deal if Tevinter knew about it.

After replaying Awakening, I've got to wonder if that Dworkin guy's research had anything to do with it. Maybe he and Anders had some conversations in their spare time...

Or the formula for gunpowder has been known for hundreds of years in Thedas and they can't put 2+2 together and figure out that's what the Qunari use in their cannons.....

Bomb explained: Drakes, being dragons eat brimstone, which is what gives them fire, so the leftovers would also be flammable or explosive :P
