It makes sense if you cheated on Ashley and turned her off to all men.

Not to mention that's not how it works in RL at all, how exactly cheating on Ashley would turn her into a s/s love interest for Shepard, if a Shepard who cheated on her is a man?

I don't know about ManShep and Kaidan (if you're stalking me for some reason, you'll know I'm not a fan of ManShep's voice acting), but FemShep and Ashley totally sounded flirty with each other on the SR-1. So I don't think VS turning out to be bi in ME3 would be that much of a stretch, really.

I don't believe any characters preference was ever explicitly stated. Just because someone has a straight relationship first in no way locks them in to a specific sexuality. Besides in ME1 it was supposed to be an option for Kaidan/Male Shepard but it was was pulled. That was because they didn't want to "Gay up" Shepard, not because it's not who Kaidan was. One male Shep line was "Kaidan I don't believe I've had the pleasure of you serving under me. Don't you think we should rectify that?" which I just copied from a youtube video. So it was definitely going to happen.

If you don't want to same smex up Kaidan you don't have to. Just like all of our actions in game are our own so are the relationships with our companions. Your Kaidan may be straight, mine just didn't get up the courage to approach Shep til ME3.

To be fair, Bathorite, we've heard it's actually easier for Mark and Jen to record all each other's lines rather than to flag some lines as not needed only to need to call one of them back later if Bioware changes their minds. That doesn't mean anything was definitely supposed to happen, only that options were kept open for a time.

I don't buy that instead of having someone designate lines as unnecessary, it's easier to pay actors to read the unnecessary lines, spend more time in the recording studio and take up more space on a disc. It'd be more efficient to just have someone cross out the lines on the VA's script before they get it. I could maybe buy that if the lines didn't make it to the disk.

You're entitled to your opinion, obviously, but it's possible I didn't explain myself that well. For a start, I don't believe Mark or Jen are paid by the line. Secondly, it might not be much hassle to cross out certain lines, but if Bioware changed their minds after recording was done and needed those lines to work for both genders then they'd have to get Mark or Jen back again - why bother when they could just have them record the lines initially? As for space on the disk, all kinds of unused resources end up making the cut (hardly limited to romance dialogue).

Also them recording those unnecessary lines give them a better paycheck because they spend more hours in the studio so it makes it worth it for the actors.

The thing about the ME1 line recordings is:

Yes, it sounds pretty reasonable to say that both actors might read every line, and even that every line might get put on the disk.

It is less reasonable to say that every sound file would get properly filed, flagged, volume-mastered, lip-synched, and keyed to fire at the right time. That all takes place rather later in the production cycle and pretty much demands that at some point, someone intended for those options to be in the game. In fact if you hack your game to romance Kaidan or Ash as a s/s Shep, you'll notice the volume isn't mastered properly, so you can kind of figure out where in the design timeline they decided they were going to cut that content. But it's definitely cut content, and not backup resources, or it wouldn't have gotten so completely integrated into the game that any user can access it by editing a single hex byte in their save.

according to quotes in my signature - they didn't considered it until AFTER recording all of the dialog for Shepard at which point they figured, hmm we have all this dialogue, could we possibly use it? and they then decided that it didn't sound right, it didn't do justice to the characters in its current state and I'm guessing they ran out of time to write in proper romances paths, not to mention calling back the actors for re-recording sessions... so they scrapped that idea.

extras get onto disc space all the time. they don't move it file by file, they move it folder by folder (that's' how early, 5 minute south park short ended up on super mario brothers CD)

I won't claim how easy or difficult it is to flag conversation content. I'm not a programer. but.. its also possible they could have left it in, because PC gamers are known for modding games. I mean - they had junior stuff deal with side quests for the engineers, Dr Chakwas, Gardner and entire Kelly arc - and it didn't seem to have taken them THAT long to implement. is the modded romance possible on xbox? or is it just pc version (that came out a year later)?

So in the end it comes down to the same thing. If it wasn't for the time constraints and the fact gay players are at the bottom of priority list due to their small numbers, Kaidan & Ash would've been available for s/s option since day 1. It is only logical then that they're available for that option next time it's possible which is ME3.

Not "difficult" so much as "time-consuming" (depending on how the engine does dialog - if it does the gender swap by symmetrical file hierarchy it wouldn't be so bad, though you'd still need someone to master and sort the files and troubleshoot the lipsynch), but from a production standpoint it amounts to the same thing.

I have no idea if the hack works on xbox. The lack of a console makes it hard to test, you'd need someone who knows how to get a savegame to their PC and back. Any volunteers?

It would only be logical, if both variables had changed. I doubt that.

The decision to include s/s romances was only announced after the launch date of ME3 was delayed by six months.

Before that, in media interviews ,we were told that there wouldn't be any new romances at all, and certainly no same-sex ones.

Undoubredly Bioware now have more time (and probably money) to include things that wouldn't necessarily have been included in a time and budget-constrained development period.

We aren't privy to their internal decision-making, but we can assume that they'd planned to have the main game finished in the normal development period. The extra time and money just allows for more polishing, deeper content and the addition of things that may not have made the cut had there not been a delay.

Obviously, s/s romances aren't a priority - but now they can satisfy more people while also polishing the game's main story and gameplay mechanics for everyone. Isn't that a good thing?

Thank you for the free publicity. It was our first Con/Expo being from a small town and as so we did not know the etiquette for panels so to be on the side of caution we just wrote down what Raphael Sbarge had said. In retrospect we should have a least recorded it as audio but as I said it was our first expo so we were quite excited and nervous.
