I don't think Ash and Kaidan should be new romances for anyone. I have been waiting for years now to be able to continue that relationship. Since bioware was so kind to give Ash and Kaidan well effectively nothing in me2. Its the only part of mass effect I care about at this point. I don't really have to much faith that bioware would do the continuing relationship right as it is. So to then add a new , as in starting in me 3 romance with them would in my mind water it down even further. So no I don't want that. I think if they make Ash and Kaidan new romances that bioware will just make it a cookie cutter new romance and maybe throw a few extra lines in for the faithful and call that good. It wouldn't be good. I want the continuing romance with Ash and Kaidan to have the best chance possible at being done well . They only was I see that as possible is if the continuing romance is the only romance.

I think everyone with an LI has this fear. Adding in a new romance point potentially takes away dialogue from the continuation and from those of us who have played from the start and are in desperate need of a satisfying resolution.LiamN7 wrote...
I posted this in another thread. But I think it would be good to post here.

I don't think they should cater to new players over the old. If they have to do this multiple entry points thing, at least add the new entry point to the romance in a way where the focus is on the continuation, but you can play it as a new (albeit shallower) romance by removing dialogues that refer to previous events.

DA2 did it right... New characters, so everyone's sexuality was a question mark to start off with... Now... the alpha female gets turned into a lesbian for the sake of pleasing a handful of fans? Weak. At least I can see how Kaidan might be bisexual.
For the next Mass Effect trilogy, let's have sexuality nailed down from the get-go. Unless there is a good reason otherwise.

Old fans who stayed true to their ME1 romances should definitely be rewarded... but many same-sex supporters, such as myself, are old fans, too. Like fans who were disappointed with the Virmire Survivor's reunion on Horizon, those of us who wanted to see same-sex romances were disappointed with our exclusion from ME2. We've been very, very patient, and in a very real way, I'd like to see some sort of reward for transferring my "forever alone" gay male Shepard all the way from ME1 into ME3.
So... What I suppose I'm saying is that I hope that starting up a new romance with an returning character is an extremely different experience than continuing a pre-existing romance. To overlap the two would ultimately hurt them both. Old, loyal fans would be disappointed, and old, same-sex supporting fans will be disappointed. The two romances should definitely be distinct.
Of course, my deepest fear is that "new" romances will come off as "shallow" because it's happening at the end Shepard's story, rather than the beginning... but I have faith in Bioware. I've waited so long for same-sex romances in the Mass Effect series, so I hestitate to believe that they'll let me down....

True...But we can assume Ashley will also become an option if Kaidan is to be...Especially since only one of them can be your Virmire survivor, it would be utterly mindblowing if they didn't. Though as of now, we only know of Kaidan.

It's very likely, I was just speaking for the sake of clariness of the info we actually got today. Our assumption (however expected/logical it is) is just not as reliable as Raphael's words.SilentNukee wrote...

I don't doubt for a sec what he said is true, the only 'if' is if something won't happen (time constraints) that will force BW to cut it, like the last 2 times. But considering they've actually confirmed s/s romances, unlike the last two times, I really really doubt it.RinjiRenee wrote...

But they cut down the number of party members. That means there can be more time devoted to smaller group, thus more and better options for everyone with this small squad.LiamN7 wrote...

Better just to play the game and see for yourself before making any conclusions. Makes life less miserable (for the time being, I suppose).

Blatant fan service,
Of course, as are many things in Bioware (and video games) in general. The entire Asari race for example. Also Miranda (genetically modified "perfect" woman with gratutious @ss shots, even during emotional scenes), and the Tali romance. (although that was admittedly one of the better written romances)

I know it must be disappointing being a gay/bi player who was overlooked or just a fan of S/S romances and not having the option until now. IMO though, that's something they should have included in the beginning.KawaiiKatie wrote...

Bringing it in now in the last installment (as opposed to before) is really screwing everyone over. If they take away resources to make the 'new' entry point romances incredibly different from the continuations, then we all end up with shallow romances because they'll be splitting the dialogue in half. If they give the S/S romances altered versions with some shared dialogue, then we get to play the 'turn on each other because one was catered to more than the other' game. Either way I don't think these new romances will be able to be as meaningful as ones that have had several games to develop.
It's still better than no S/S option at all, but it's something they should have done in the beginning so that there would be a seamless intigration of content by the time we got to the dramatic finale. Basically their options now are 'short-change everyone' or 'short-change the S/S fans yet again'. It's not a great place to be. :/
I do hope this is true for S/S fans, I just get to worry for the next few months how they're going to handle it along with everything else going on in ME3.

Pretty much this. I'd rather live in hope and believe that Bioware will pull off all the romances from every angle with grace. If I was pessimistic about it, I'm not sure I could survive until March.

I hope they do it right. But the last couple of years have taught me not to trust that they will. If they make Ash and Kaidan a new LI it will be watered down for the faithful. I have no doubt about it. No matter how good people would tell me it would be,...I would always wonder how much better it could have been.KawaiiKatie wrote...

I agree with all of this. Bioware should've bitten the bullet years ago and included same-sex pairings. That way, we'd all be focused right now on continuing our old romances, or wondering how the new characters would fit into our romances plans. The fandom would be a different place.
Though, the extended development time tells me that Bioware is working very hard to make this game a crowning acheivement, something that will win award after award and leave everyone stunned. I'm very hopeful that the romances will be a part of this, and that the love-story will be a rewarding experience for everyone: old fans, new fans, loyal fans, straight fans, gay fans.... I have hope. I agree that we're in a bad place right now, a place that we never should have had to be in... but I have hope that Bioware will pull us out of it.

They would've done it even if there weren't same-sex romances. How much PR do we hear everyday how they want to expand the franchise's audience and how much this game is super-perfect for new-comers? You think they wouldn't allow new people to start romances from scratch? No chance. It would've happened one way or another. Plus, they've cut the squad down to expand individual characters. I really don't see any reason to worry in such case.Aris Ravenstar wrote...
