shepard piloting the normandy would be like shepard mining for minerals.
it doesnt belong in this game.
It would totally fit in. It doesn't necessarily need to be Shepard in the pilot seat. We've already taken control of Joker once. I remember it fit in well in KOTOR as well. It would add a nice layer to the game as ME2 has been reduced to its cover shooter element action wise. We've alreadybeen in a car chase on Illium in the LotSB DLC so why not be involved in a ship battle in space as well?

the only space battles i want would be simple mini games where we fly into a battle with the normandy hologram and have to sortof play an asteroids/geometry wars type game every once in a while. i was sortof bummed in ME2 that the normandy didint look any different after i bought the thanix cannon or the armor plating too.
something like this?

The Normandy is not tough enough to lead the charge. With it's stealth systems, it is probably best to have it play a more background role. Just saying.

Shep might have to make some choices. Choose wrong and perhaps ... well .. bad losses that could tip the battle and make it harder.
I'd hope it'd be something more than boarding actions. Repeats of ME where you're fighting an avatar of a Reaper should be minimal. I would like something akin to the KOTOR cutscene but not fatal, just a really pitched fight where you can't come out unscathed. Or imagine playing ME2 with a 1/1000 chance you can come through the Suicide mission with all of your crew even with all upgrades.

Oh wow, I've totally forgotten that last battle for KOTOR. It's been so long.
I was actually thinking of B5 when I said RiS. The commander of the allied fleet oversees the battlefield and delivers his orders in real time and he has to stand there and watch his allies die. It hurts, it really really hurts because by the time that one tentative collective courageous struggle came about (Sheridan being the rallying force behind it), there is already much empathy with the characters and races in the show. In the aftermath, I wonder if their deaths would bring victory. So much uncertainty against such odds. Sorrow and despair. That's what I was thinking of. That the space battles would not be limited to just one massive fight but two.
Thereafter, Sheridan laid the trap to force the showdown and he had to make the hardest choice of all; the shock and realization on the Ranger's face on what was asked of him and his crew. I doubt this will happen in ME3 but there might be more impact if the player has to decide in the foremost battle and see the implications of the decisions.

Curious. Are you talking about an "epic" cinematic battle or one in which we control and participate in the fighting? If it's the first then I would say yes but with some changes. I would like to see the cinematic destruction of the ships that's trying to stop or block the Reapers early on in the game to set the tone for a high stakes and darker story. If it's more along the lines of participating in the space battle by "assuming control" (No pun intended) of the Normandy through Joker then no. Joker and EDI's job is to fly, mine and my squad's responsibility is to fight. (Off topic) I would also like to see another Joker impersonation of Legion, that would be "epic".S.A.K wrote...
You know like the once at the end of ME1. We are fighting Reapers and maybe the final ME3 battle takes place in space with the combined fleets of all races take out the remaining Reapers.

Would also like to have some involvement with them through dialogue choices, hold that fleet back, move it in now etc etc.
It would be glorious *eyes glaze over*

I ment a "cinamatic" scene. I don't think we'll get to actually pilot the Normandy but I could be wrong. Casey did say we can't modify the Normandies external look because it will stop them from doing "Epic pre-rendered cutscenes."shadowreflexion wrote...

I know I do. Just so long as they don't pull that tired David v. Goliath cop-out, via excessive focus on the Normandy vs Reapers. Let's see those other civilizations throwing in their lots too!
Wide-scale fleet engagements, please!

That is one of the worst space battles ever filmed-even worse than Plan 9 From Outer Space.
I wonder what Lucas was thinking? Hey guys, let's clutter the screen as much as possible.
What exactly do you think large space battles involving fighters looks like? 1700's era british forming lines and staying respectul distances from the enemy?
Truth is, it's going to be alot more cluttered. Because every single hit generates a phenomenal amount of now-deadly projectiles floating in space instead of conviently disappearing.
As far as the topic goes, how many genres really need to be crammed into one game? Do we need a sim-city interface so that we can have the citites build defenses against the reapers?
No need to force in space-sim on top of all the other forced features.

Gunnery Chief: This, recruits, is a 20-kilo ferris slug, feel the weight. Every five seconds, the main gun of an everest class dreadnought accelerates one to 1.3% of light-speed. It impacts with the force of a 38-kiloton bomb. That is three times the yield of the city-buster dropped on Hiroshima back on Earth. That means- Sir Issac Newton is the deadliest son-of-a-**** in space. Now! Serviceman Burnside! What is Newton's first law?
Serviceman Burnside: Sir! An object in motion stays in motion, sir!
Gunnery Chief: No credit for partial answers, maggot!
Serviceman Burnside: Sir! Unless acted on by an outside force, sir!
Gunnery Chief: Damn straight! I dare to assume you ignorant jackasses know that space is empty. Once you fire this hunk of metal, it keeps going til it hits something. That can be a ship. Or the planet behind that ship. It might go off into deep space and hit somebody else in ten thousand years. If you pull the trigger on this, you are ruining someones day, somewhere and sometime. That is why you check your targets. That is why you wait for the computer to give you a damn firing solution. That is why, Serviceman Chung, we do not "eyeball it". This is a weapon of mass destruction. You are not a cowboy shooting from the hip!

It really didn't fit in KoTR. Those turret games were the worst parts of the game. They were badly done, had nothing to do with any skills you had in the game. The more mini-game stuff you cram in the more you tear away at what the game does well. Focus on the combat, the dialog and the characters and don't try and do everything. We've already seen the shooter-on-rails vehicle combat bit and that looks awful already.

You liked that part, why? It was like a giant testament to how terrible dreads are and just how badly they need to be mothballed.

No need to decommission them though, and I hope they can deal out some nice carnage against the Reapers, but large scale battles in space can do a lot of damage to those caught in the crossfire or from stray rounds,
and I personally like how the power of that class of ship is put in perspective with examples at least I could visualize.
