So I recently bought DA2, and was wondering should I let Bethany or Carvr survive?

It doesn't matter if I'm a mage or a rogue, I'm more intend on choosing whom I should have as a squad member. I'm not asking who is a better squad mate, but I'm asking whom of them has a more emotional/stronger impact on the story line?

I also ask that you avoid spoilers. I know nothing of this games story, nothing what's gonna happen or why Hawke is in Kirkwall and I intend keeping it so. So if you could tell me which one you prefer most with as minor spoiler as possible, than I would be very grateful.

I prefer Bethany. Her dialog with other party member are "funny" and her impact to the story is better than Carver's IMO. Though Carver isn't a bad option at all. But I like women party member more:P

Depends. Do you want a kawaii deferential imouto-tan or a jealous, pissy little brother?

The biggest difference between Bethany and Carver is that Bethany is a plot device and Carver is a character. Bethany is much more likable as a person, but Carver has more depth as a character and a stronger personal presence. I would say Carver is vastly more interesting of the two, but if you'd rather a more inoffensive sibling go with Bethany.

Love Bethany than Carver. Carver is an annoying brother, even in the battle and in family life. Bethany is much lovely.

I prefer Carver because I find interactions with him more interesting and dynamic than with Bethany. Bethany is too nice and perfect. She's the one everybody (in game) loves, in a kinda Mary Sueish way. It makes interaction with her a bit "meh" and tepid.

That's what I'm most looking for. Whom of them have a more impact to the plot of the story. If Bethany really has more impact to the plot, then I'm gonna choose her.

I think the story makes more sense if she's the family mage and you're not.

Though I utterly resent her being called a plot device. Being nice and non-confrontational does not equate not having a personality or somehow being less of a character.

Hmm, this leads to a question; are Bethany's and Carver's story different from each other? Much or little?

They both have equal impact on the plot, imho. Carver has slightly more complex personal quest tie in in Act 1 though, I found.

I happen to (vastly) prefer Carver. In the games where I play with Bethany she is just... there. Carver argues, confronts, gets in full on shouting matches with Hawke, and is generally a thorn in their side. BUT there is an occasional instance in game where despite all of this sibling rivalry he demonstrates undeniable loyalty and puts himself between Hawke and danger, and this contrast makes the family tie feel stronger than with Bethany.

I also happen respectfully disagree with Queen-Of-Stuff. I felt that mage protagonist has a more personal stake in the game plot, the fact that magic use in public is largely ignored by the templars, non-withstanding.

I like bethany more because in the game you are supposed to care about your family, as hawke. The mother was a failure in that department, and the only true family link that my hawke kind of had was his little sister, with a family-like friendly relation. With Carver he is just annoying and i simply stop caring about all the family.

They have three different "fates" each depending on your choices, but two of them are identical and third not all that different from the other's parallelling fate. So I would say no.

Carver is also just as much of a plot device, but he has more development on top of it. They both serve the same general purpose in the game, which, to simplify things, is to provide a different perspective on the mage issue than the player will have according to his class. As far as plot relevance alone goes, they're pretty much equal and it doesn't matter who you pick.

Bethany has a personality, but it's very much chained to her role in the story in a way that sort of constrains her potential. Because the player is supposed to like her and empathize with her, they sort of glaze over some of the depth or flaws she could have; there just isn't very much there to her beyond her presence as a close sympathetic figure. Which I'm not saying is a bad thing, because she kind of had to be like that to achieve as much universal likability as possible and serve her purpose in the narrative, but on their own merits, Carver is the stronger character.

Though, I'd agree the game had holes with a mage PC. You have to be willing to suspend your disbelief quite a bit. The warrior/rogue story is a little more coherent. I would honestly recommend playing through as a warrior/rogue first, siblings notwithstanding.

I like 'em both but after quite a few playthroughs I've come to like Carver more, for the reasons stated above. The relationship between Hawke and Carver feels more real, to me personally.

Hmm, I like the idea of 'sibling love' between Carver and Hawke, but I think I'll go with Bethany on this playthrough.

Thank you for your time everyone.

Bethany...

I actually find her to be one of the better character in Dragon Age II. The only family member I really cared about! Her banter with Varric and Isabela is so lovely.

Carver doesn't really work if you go with a sarcastic playthrough - as he's a bad version of Hawke.

BASTERT U RUIND THE GAME 4 ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111 NOW I NO WAT HAPENZ !!!!1

Just kidding, but seriously, let Bethany live. Carter is a jerk that whines more than Anders (as if that was possible?!) and Bethany is a lot more pleasant to be around. Besides that, mages > warriors and she'll be very handy.

cone of cold, son.

That's a harrd choice. At first, I couldn't stand Carver, but now I might actually like him more than Bethany.

It is too hard to give a more defined answer.

Both are sucky filler toons with annoying voice overs, with poor character development and they hardly even matter.

One has big rack and the other one is a "umadbro" type. Basically, they are unused potential. Make your choice.

Carver is a much much better character. Bethany just ends up being a plot device to garner sympathy rather than being a fleshed out character.

I like Carver more because his relationship with (male) Hawke is more believable. Bethany is far too 1 dimensional. Though I liked how she said "the maker has a sense of humor" at the very beginning, if she'd continued with that kind of humor I could've grown to like her as a character.

Carver is a complex, somewhat tragic character, especially if he chooses a certain path at the end of Act I. I really did feel for him, even when I was completely frustrated by how he acted towards my mageHawke. At the end of the game, he was one of the few I really felt had growth throughout the "years" of the game, and it did feel like an accomplishment to have him on my side for the finale.

Bethany is sweet, and I did feel protective of her, but it's not the same. I felt more like she needed to be put somewhere safe and quiet, which isn't so great for the story.
