Even with the new update, I'm still getting the quest Fool's Gold when I know Nathaniel was kept alive, even if he was at Vigil's keep, it was fully upgraded and he was still alive. Sorry if this has been stated already, but I would really like to see him again and hope this gets resolved soon.

The problem is that Awakening doesn't recognize that Vigil's Keep is upgraded, so it flags him as dead, even if the epilogue claims he's alive. The only way to get the game to flag him as alive is to take him to Amaranthine/Dragonbone Wastes.

FYI, if you use the "Martyr" preset when starting your game, you will get the Nathaniel quest. I had the same problem, with my save imports, but I used that preset for my last game (I had a very similar DA:O game that got deleted) and I got the Nathaniel quest.

I know about that, but I prefer my choices that were made. Its just a side quest though, hope it doesn't delete Nathaniel from the series completely just because I left him at Vigil's Keep.

It may have just been a fluke (that actually happened more than once), but I loaded an Awakening save that was from long before the final battle (it was an abandoned playthrough), and to my surprise, I got Nathaniel in Act 3.
If you feel like playing it all over again, you could try it, but I'd feel horrible if that didn't work for you.
Did anyone else import a half-finished Awakening playthrough?

When I imported a save, I also did not get the Nathaniel quest. In my case, he was also left at Vigil's Keep and survived.
On that note, I have a question about importing. I imported a save from a completed Witch Hunt which in turn was imported from Awakening which imported from Origins. Should I use the Awakening epilogue save or is the Witch Hunt save OK?
