Hello, so I wanted to play mass effect 1 again before the 3rd one comes out. I had lost my serial key, but I remember registering the game when I downloaded Bring Down the Sky. However, ever since EA took over they only have the new games on the site. Where is the old bioware site where my cd key would be? Or is it lost forever :(
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also have this problem. I lost my retail copy when I moved out into my new place just 2 months ago and I knew I had the game registered with my old Bioware account but now I can't find the keys anywhere. I paid for that game and I would certainly like to play it. If we can't get our old cd-keys back then we should at least be compensated somehow.

Why is it bioware/ea fault you lost your keys?? That is like saying it would be Honda's fault for you losing your car keys.

The old forums were hacked, and thus EA took them down to prevent issues and they have changed all passwords as a result causing some issues with those on the boards and games. This wasn't just a whim of theirs to remove the boards and you should have taken better care of YOUR stuff, instead of expecting someone else to do it for you.

And no responsibility lies whatsoever with EA? Is it our fault that their server was hacked? They admitted to not protecting their server "as well as they should have". Maybe they should at least be partially responsible? I don't know...just maybe. Yeah, it would be nice if everyone could keep up with everything, but if EA dropped the ball on this one then they should at least be understanding about "lost keys". Although, I daresay, it will be hard to prove you guys ever had keys in the first place. I'm sure EA has lost all data involved. Damn...conundrum.

All I can say (and hope) is that EA will at least be understanding about the matter. My experience with them so far (through tech support chat) has been met with mixed emotions:  While they seem at least willing and eager to help out with problems, they're decidedly incapable of actually doing anything "concrete" when it comes resolving said problems. I can also say, "It's a sad day for all of us when companies (EA included) take over other companies with good intentions but then just fumble-fart through the whole process and not provide actual usable support." That's all I'm saying. Except for a few meaty-bone treats over a handful of issues to shut me up, they have yet to impress me with their current state of operations.

Good luck to you guys; stay civil; and try multiple times if you get a negative response at first. I've noticed a huge diametrically-opposed stance from one tech support person to the next...and the next...and the next...and the next.

I never said it was their fault, all I want to know is whether there was a way to retrieve it. I suppose there are other methods, I wouldn't want to use them, but I don't want to re-buy the game.

Contact EA support would be the only possible way of getting your old product key back if you didnt keep it handy somewhere.

@pyroman: Why should you be compensated for anything? You admitted you lost the hard copy of the game, and you relied on a 3rd party who was under no obligation whatsoever to retain your data for you. This is like trying to hold a car manufacturer responsible if you lost your car keys, and then the car was stolen.

Unless you have some form of agreement for data protection and/or backup with Bioware/EA, then the only person responsible for the integrity of YOUR data, is yourself. If you dont back it up, either by sending yourserlf an email, writing it down and keeping it safe, or using some other procedure, then you have noone to blame but yourself.

Considering it was the Legacy forums, they could have just shut them down when they turned this one on and cleared the data.  They have no responsibilty to anyone for the loss of access to the data stored on their site because it was the game owners responsibility to keep up with purchased discs and liscenses.  The only responsibility EA would have in this is if they didn't keep up good security and someone used the info they got to hurt you directely with the information stolen ie identiy theft.  Now the ultimate responsibilty is the idiots who hacked the server but that is another story and discussion.

I wish they had shut them down. Would have been less confusing. And less potentially dangerous, now, we see.

To a point you are correct, but there was a huge amount of info contained on those sites that is basically lost now, for multiple games.  ME, NWN, NWN2, just to name a few that people still play and now the help and work arounds on those forums are mostly lost.

I'm surprised the useful data is lost. Thought it was just the user accounts and such. Certainly they should be able to salvage the forum information...?

To my mind it isn't a matter of can they, but will they. In their mind why bother, those are old games and don't really make them money and it would cost them time and effort to harvest the info, soooo just wipe the forum and let this one do everything even if people still had bookmarks in the old because it was a good storehouse of info.
