Traditionally, in BioWare games, romances boil down to four phases:
1. Flirt with your target.
2. Have a few conversations.
3. Sex scene!
4. Final kiss/hug before the big fight.
Yet, even though romances are afforded so much attention by the BioWare community at large, it is laughable to see how little often other characters in the game even reference or allude to the main character's romance, especially in cases where it would be welcome. For example, Jack never mentions your relationship with Miranda if you indeed have one with her. She never accuses you of favoritism (especially if you side with Miranda during the Miranda vs. Jack encounter) or even reference the relationship at all.
Additionally, the romances themselves are only a few dozen lines of dialogue and mostly consist of heart-yanking one-liners that basically say, "Oh... I love you so much..." *Sex scene* After that, the relationship appears to remain a state of stagnation, with no conflicts between the main character and the betrothed that might help facilitate the maturity that most healthy romantic relationships establish.
I really hope that BioWare would work on integrating the romance meta-game with the in-game plot and expanding their size (script-wise) relative to the other parts of the game. Have other characters reference the romance. Make the romance evolve from mere puppy love by introducing conflicts that strain the relationship. Despite the poor quality of DA2, one thing I can commend about it is how the game handled romances. For example, I romanced Merrill, and the romance encompassed many of the qualities and attributes that I want to see from such. Anders referenced the relationship, the relationship entered a rocky road with Merrill's wish to repair the mirror, etc.
I don't know what to end with... but BioWare, inject some life into the romances. They really need it. Make them pop out of the screen. Engage our senses. Make them dance like embers on a fire.
