I remember reading about the fact that the devs wouldn't let you continue the story into Mass Effect 3 if Shepard died at the end of Mass Effect 2. They said that their reasoning is Mass Effect is "Shepard's story," so they would let you play as Cyber-Joker or anything.

That got me thinking about the possibility of Shepard's death. I may be a bit slowpoke here but I haven't seen any discussion about it on the forums and I would be interested in knowing what other Mass Effect fans would think about Shepard dying in Mass Effect 3.

That doesn't mean I am necessarily dead-set on seeing both my Shepard and all of yours being killed as the only option of saving the Galaxy. However, it would be a very powerful way to finally cement Shepard's role in the salvation of the Galaxy, at the cost of his own life.

Take some other games for example. One of the strongest examples that I can recall of a main character's self-sacrifice in order to finally defeat a great evil is in the videogame SMT: Persona 3. The ending of that game is the only time I can recall myself ever really shedding (manly) tears.

Also, the option for the Warden to sacrifice himself was not as powerful, due to the lack of impact that it had (due to having to accomodate other endings) but was a very interesting choice in a genre that values choice and freedom above alot of other things.

So TL;DR: what would you think about Shepard dying at the end of the Mass Effect 3?

Looking forward to your responses.:)

I'd like it as one of the many endings.

I am almost certain that we will have such option, and I'd definitely choose it. Yes,it's a cliche, but I like it.

I'd rather live. if some people feel suicidal, that's their business. As long as there's multiple options, I don't mind.

My Shepard will live to see another day... heck he deserves it... He'll be makin' sweet love to Jack with the "suicide mission" track being played in the background... EPIC :P

As long as my Shep's funeral doesn't include getting spaced. (Again)

I hope there is such an ending that doesn't just resolve around it being the worse ending, sure I want that too but it shouldn't be the only way to have Shepard being dead at the end. In other words, yes an ending in which Shepard dies but the galaxy is saved from the Reaper threat.

This. If only because we weren't able to properly do so in Dragon Age.

Shepard is only boring if you play Shep as a boring individual :wizard:

Only if it's optional.

I would rage if I have to sacrifice my canon Shepard for good ending.

I think many people will be angry to see the protagonist simply die at the end after playing three games.

Great thing is this isnt Hollywood. Mass Effect can do multiple ends as its what the game most famous for with its choice system.   Theres no doubt there will be a death ending. However im sure it will be one outcome of many.   Casey has already said the game and its endings are branching out like crazy.

:)

As long as that's not the only choice... then, I'm good.

I want one where he lives and just barely saved the galaxy with mostly everything in ruins.

While there may be some who have visions of martyrdom - or are so fatalistic that death is the only option - having Shepard die isn't any more "cliche" than having a self-gratifying, feel good, wish fulfillment Shepard.

"Some people need to feel better about themselves through a video game character, that's their business. As long as there's multiple options, I don't mind."

That statement would be just as flawed. Not everyone who wants Shepard to live is just an overweight basement dweller who needs a video game character to feel bad ass.

And those who find the option of Shepard's death interesting - aren't all one way either.

As a story possibility, it's always appealing - and, depending on "why" Shepard would be dying... I might choose the option.

If you mean sacrificing the rest of the world to satisfy my own ego, that might work...

As long as it's not the Paragon choice.

I'm looking at you, Infamous 2.

I wouldn't mind that being a possible outcome. I wouldn't mind sad endings either as long as there is also the possibility of good endings where most of the people you care about, including Shepard make it through this with minimal scarring and death. :)

When i started playing the first game i was already looking forward to an eventual "heroic sacrifice" at the end of ME3, but after i saw Shepard die in the beginning of ME2, i knew it wouldn't be that special and epic seeing as you already saw him die in a "simple" attack by the Collectors. It just wouldn't be the same for me, the first time is always special. When the time comes I'm sticking to living as a hero.

I think that Shepard surviving the war and saving the galaxy, but all his friends and especially L.I.s dying, leaving him all alone in victory, is a much better and more dramatic ending.

I'm almost 100% sure that's one of the endings. I might consider doing it on my canon playthrough, as my canon Shepard is imagined a sort of a sarcastic badass with good intentions, and he would probably just sack up and die for the end.

Plus, I'm a sucker for bittersweet endings.

Why does it have to be a heroic death?

I'd laugh 'til I cried if the didn't-prepare-properly ending was Shepard's dying from a weird fungal infection because he skipped investing in tougher armor or something else as random and ignoble.

More seriously, a heroic death ending is fine as long as it's one of many options and makes sense for the story.
