That's it - he's so drunk when he's telling you that joke, that he passes out before he has a chance to finish it.

To be honest up til I saw the trailer I weren't even considering Oghren for my party. But now, he's one off the prime suspects, so to speak.

The point of the joke is that the human walked into the tavern at all.

Dwarves always have a very high alcohol tolerance in any fantasy setting, and consider the other races unable to hold their liquor.

So, the entirety of the joke is that the human walked into the tavern. Hence the reason he starts laughing before he passes out.

When a human walks into a bar, they hit their head. While dwarves are able to just walk under it.

If you look at a lot of the party banter that has been revealed, you'll think it sounds at least a bit dumb. For example, when Alistair says "More crazy? I thought we were full up." What I'm hoping to see is, in a desire to not show anything good, they show the bottom of the barrel stuff just so the element of there being banter is there.

What kind of banter would you prefer then?

Yay for more crappy one liners...

I would actually like to see some deep character development!

Altough Shale might be a bit cliché with the whole 'who am I story', I like it much better than all those one liners from Alistair, Morrigan ect...

*shrugs* Honestly I don't care much. From what I've seen thusfar, the banter doesn't live up to the BG2 banter. That said, it isn't that important to me, and I haven't even played the game yet. I've seen two lines said by characters that I thought were kind of dull, not a big deal.

The one liners really turn me off most of the party NPCs. The so-called witty banter, boasting, and hand-holding dialogue might go down well with a 10 yr old audience, but I don't want to insult 10 yr olds. Sorry fans.

I enjoy the oneliners, even if I don't find Oghren that funny so far. There's nothing preventing oneliners and deep character development from a happy co-existence. I'm sure there is more to Alistair than snark, and the devs have hinted as much.

BG2 was full on lame one-liners too.

If Oghrens joke was a oneliner, that critizes the human alcohol-tolerance it would have been this:

A human walks OUT of a bar! ^^

Once upon a time in Guild Wars there was an NPC that told random jokes, one which went pretty much like this:

"A troll, an elf and a dwarf walked into a bar... No wait! The Dwarf walked under it."

It is a classic fantasy pun of the common "Someone walks into a bar..." jokes.

hahaha I sure remembered that one Posted Image
Guild Wars sure had his good dose of humor, some skill names were hilarious as well as the dancing, I absolutely like the dancing Posted Image
I agree that humor and charcater development can co-exist no problem, however the only things we has so far seen are Shale's origin quest and Morrigan's troublke with her mother...
I'm sure there will be much more to the NPC characters of course, their motives ect have to be explained.
But if those motives are the things we know thus far: you look strong I join, I hate the order count me in.. ect
That'll be a bit dissapointing =/ However I believe in BioWare and I'm sure the game will turn out marvelous Posted Image

Were you honestly expecting deep character development from character reveal trailers? I'm not sure what is bothering you.

That's actually not ussually how those type of jokes go.  The joke followed the standard form for such jokes.  You'd need to either be a dwarf or be able to look through a dwarf's eyes to get it.  Any dwarf would have gotten the joke right away.  It's a race joke and a jab at human alcohol intolerance.

The human walks out of a bar joke also works as a joke, yes.  But is far from the only way to deliver such a joke.  I got the joke right away.  Just because you didn't does not make it an improper one.

There's two ways to deliver, laughing at someone starting an act that's beyond them, or laughing at the idea of them actually succeeding at it.  It depends on you're viewpoint before going into the joke.

If you're really being insulting the idea of a human going into a tavern at all is hilarious.  It's like laughing at a girl WANTING to play sports with men.  It's a joke in rather poor tastes actually, Oghren really is drunk off his donkey.  In the dwarf's case it's a racist joke.  In the example I just gave in non joke format, it's a sexist statement.  Like "you throw like a girl."

It sounds like a rip off from Markus Heitz' books. There too was a dwarf which had a joke, but never got to finish it.

Nevertheless, I'm fond of one-liners. As long as they also got a more deep part, it's all good.

You're worried that because this game has some one-liners it won't live up to BG2 banter? Do you remember Minsc? Butt kicking for goodness? Or Jan Jansen (who was awesome). He was great!

Bioware has always had a silly streak going through all their games (except Mass Effect, boo Mass Effect) with characters like HK22, Jan Jansen/Minsc so on so forth. That they're only showing the light funny side of dialogue doesn't necessitate that it's all fluff. Doesn't mean it all isn't fluff. We don't know, though the characters have all received endless praise from reviews so far.

I think in that case the joke would've been funnier if he said "a human walked OUT of a tavern...".Posted Image

Oops, sorry, didn't see previous post that said the same.
