I am trying to set up three computers to play my Harvest of Chaos campaign on my LAN. All of my computers are Macs, but I can natively run Windows XP on two of them when needed. I have 3 copies of SoZ, 3 copies of MotB, and 5 copies of NWN2 (2 Mac, 3 Windows).  I've been able to get the game started and all the computers connected, but after a half hour or so the host crashes. They are all patched to 1.23. I've tried two different combinations:

Mac Host, Mac client, Windows client.
Windows Host, 2 Mac clients

I haven't yet tried these combinations, but could:
Mac Host, 2 Windows clients
Windows Host, Windows client, Mac client

All of my computers only have 2 GB RAM, so my first thought is that 2 GB is not sufficient for hosting and I should increase the host to 4 GB. Is lack of sufficient RAM on the host known to cause crashes for even a small number of players?

I tried Mac Host and 2 Windows clients and got a bit further before it crashed trying to load an area.

I'm going to try just hosting on windows with only 1 windows client and see if it gets further. I'd like to eventually have 4 people able to play though.

Lack of RAM certainly will cause crashes but what you describe sounds like transition crashing, which is not uncommon. Are you transitioning from exterior to interior by any chance? Just be aware that some clients can't handle interiors smaller than 2x2. If your transition point is in a non-walkable region, that can cause a crash too.

Other than that, you might consider using Skywing's bug fix, which addresses the more common issues, if you're not using it already.

We are just running my production release Harvest of Chaos campaign, which doesn't have any area transition problems. One crash was on an area transition, but others have been during conversations, during inventory managing, and just walking. I reduced my client number to 1 instead of 2 and haven't had any more crashes. My guess is that memory usage on the host server is directly proportional with the number of clients.

I'll look at Skywing's fix. I think I'll also look at increasing the memory to 4 or 6 GB on the host and see if that helps.

Thanks

I would suggest running the server on windows xp ( via macboot if you have to ) and go ahead and set it up to use NWNx, and xp_bugfix

You won't be able to use the client extension with mac clients, but the server side stuff alone fixes a LOT of issues for both LAN and MP play, there really is not a difference between the two.

Unfortunately the mac port of NWN2 is relatively shoddy. ( as a long time mac user i've never purchased a mac version and just boot into xp to play or dev things, albeit i compile scripts and adjust 2da's, and set up graphics all on the mac side where i have programming tools, painter and photoshop ) If they ever release a 1.23 version on the mac side that also includes skywings major fixes to the client, and include the 2 expansions/MOW as official purchases i'd be first in line.

Adding more RAM definitely added some stability. I've upgraded two of the systems to 8 GB and was able to have three players without problems for a couple of hours. Eventually crashes occurred again, but much much later. Since Windows XP can't see more than 3 GB or so anyway, I suspect that upgrading to 4 GB RAM would have been sufficient. If I switch to Windows 7 then the additional memory could be used IF NWN2 is written to use it, which I don't know.
