Most characters I've seen on here are warriors, rogues, and mages, but I have not seen anybody harping about the abilities of rangers. So my question is what's everybodys thoughts on rangers? What are some good builds? Strength vs dex for a ranger? Never played one myself, but find myself getting interested in the prospect, of just playing a ranger, along with the marbari wardog.
Has anybody ever played a ranger?

Ranger, the best go for rogues, don't use warriors. So basically do not pump strength, but Cunning instead. Playing as a ranger you will need the archery tree, of course, but also prepare the ranger specialization, which allow you to summon your pet.

Well the ranger is one of the "crowd creation" specializations, so it isn't incredibly popular.
The best way to work ranger is to get your str up just enough to use the best light armor (about 24 for awakening) and then pump the rest of your points into cunning and dexterity. For talents max out the archery tree and get lethality in the rogue tree. You can also grab the mechanical talents and the stealth talents but it depends on how you want to play the game.
Grab a bow with rapid aim and make sure you have your pet out constantly so it can draw threat away from you. Any threat reducing accessories are desired. Make sure you grab some light armor that has bonuses to dexterity and/or cunning. Wade's drakeskin armor (superior) is probably best for origins...and you can laugh at anyone dumb enough to shoot fireballs at you.
As for other specializations bard is a decent one. Duelist is pretty good if you're scared of being forced into melee combat. Take assassin only if you're willing to sacrifice some of your other talents for combat manuevering and coup de' grace and you're willing to jump into melee every once in a while (but it is decent if you're worried about running out of stamina, the final talent in the assassin tier can be a lifesaver in some longer battles).

Ranger isn't a class, its a specialisation for rogues. Yes, you HAVE to be a rogue to get it. Sorry about that. So basically you play a rogue with one less set of talents from a spec (Bard, Assassin, Duelist) and you have a pet run around instead. There isnt really much to shout about. I'm not realy sure what you thougth they were, but you just play a rogue as a rogue, and have a spider to web people. Hope that clear's it up a bit. Unless i'm simply thinking of thr Rogue spec and you are talking about something else?
EDIT: if you want to play as a rogue archer (or any i guess really) I found this guide very informative:

I love playing ranger too, recently started another campaign on nightmare mode with one. The bear is quite useful as a secondary tank i found.

I belive the OP is thinking of Ranger as in a Archer style rogue. Not the Ranger spec which focuses on pets.
I avoid archery on rogues since it takes too much to be effective.
Though the Ranger specs pets add greatly to a certain rogue build.
The melee all str Duelest/Ranger with duel heavy weapons is pretty powerful and fun build to play.
Im getting ready to start a Role Play and Mini-fic tie in game where im going to play a Dalish Elf Ranger/Assassin Duel Dagger Rogue. I think that should be fun.

I love playing an archer rogue with the ranger spec. I pump dex and cunning (dex only to 36 and then its all cunning). Strength only to 20. I take at least one level in Shadow so that I can sneak around a bit. I agree with Last Darkness though in that it takes a while for the build to be effective, but once it is up and running this is a great build. The bear is very useful late in the game but I will also take my mabari and call my blight wolf ... they look like and sometimes will move as a pack (depending on tactics) and it makes for some great visuals. Great against large groups and for drawing attention away from my archer (thinking of certain creepy crawlers in the deep roads here).

Made Nathaniel in Awakening into a Ranger. Great Bear is a BEAST.

i am thinking of a stealth ranger, specialized in traps and bombs and archer with bard as second specialization. uyou turn on stealth, setup traps then summon your pets and activate the bard song that stun in the middle of the group while still in stealth then kill the lowest health with archery..

I love the bears, so building a ranger is a must. They are very fun to use.
