Storywise, is Awakening worth it?

Hi,

I decided to play the Awakening after finishing DA:O, and I imported my warden. However, I don´t really see the reason why I should play it, storywise? I mean, the only think that Im curious about - so far - (Played about 2 hours) is how Anders turned into the Anders in DA2. The reast just seems like boring defending the city and fight even more (sigh...) darkwpawn...

Isn't the whole game be it Origins or Awakening about killing Darkspawn?

Why play Awakenings or any of the other Origins DLC if you already made up your mind about it... Not to be flaming your post, but when you like the game you do not care how many Darkspawn or demons you kill. I personally thought Awakenings was a whole lot better then Origins in some aspects and lacking in others... I did miss the whole love part. Like I made Alistair love me and then run away with Leliane.

Awakening is an expansion. It's an additional chapter to the DA:O story. "Take it for what it is".

Yes, there is a story, but in the Grand Scheme of Things, it will be a minor chapter. You will not slay another Archdemon this time...

Yet, there are many compelling (and mostly sad) side stories.

It feels like a rush job all around, which is a pity. The story feels more "condensed" than in Origin, IMO, resulting in a lack of atmosphere. Some interesting new ideas, but not enough time to dwell on them. The new characters would have had potential, but are mostly underdeveloped.

I actually find the area design (Wending Woods, etc.) more "alive" than in Origins.

If you want some more quick DA:O, then it's OK. However, I've heard DA2 is even worse... and that is supposed to be a full-fledged sequel, not an expansion like Awakening.

You extend the Warden's adventure beyond Origins. That's enough for me, as I got attached to my wardens and wanted more to do with them after defeating the Archdemon.

Just like the rest of the Origins dlc, and even DA2, Awakening has a rushed feel to it, and the countless bugs, along with quests and random battles that won't trigger, and pieces of armor sets that are m.i.a. are obvious signs. Still, I had fun with Awakening, though it's hard not to think "What if?", if Bioware spent more time with this expansion.

Actually, there's a list somewhere on this forum that lists the essential bugfix mods (eight, I think) for Awakening. After I installed them, I didn't encounter any serious problems.

(The only ones I remember was a confusion with the "Law and Order", "Smuggler's Run" and "Rumblings from Beneath" quests all running simultaneously, so "Smuggler's Run" kept open after the others were finished... and the epilogue bug with the endlessly repeating cutscene)

Not only "Awakening" itself felt rushed, but I also felt my character was rushed through the whole story... so much so I couldn't finish several quests because the last chapter had already started...

Okei, I see... I feel a little detached from my Warden for some reason. probably cause he doesn´t have a voice and thus feel less alive. But still the epicness of DA:O was really great. But I don´t think I want to play an 10 hours hack and slash just to save som villagers. I hope there will be some intriguing story.

But I´ll give it a chance. I totally dig Anders in Awakening, while in DA2 he felt... boring.

Funny, I feel closer to my Warden BECAUSE he has no voice. With a voice, it would be another person, reading the lines I select for him, but not "me". Without a voice, I can imagine him saying the lines as I want them to be said.

Story-wise, it's "less personal", because you already have your position and an army at your disposal, and your love interests from DAO are busy elsewhere, but you don't just have to save "some villagers", it's about the whole world again...

And this time, they talk...

(Personally, I prefer Nathaniel. I wish he'd had more chance of development...)

I'm also a Nathaniel fan. Anders and Sigrun are close seconds.

I also liked the political side of being Warden Commander/Arl of Amaranthine, and how you get to choose where to send soldiers to protect the various areas of Amaranthine, as well as the whole "A Day in Court" quest. I have to behead Ser Temmerly the Ox every time.

Yes, many areas of Awakening could have used more development. This expansion could been amazing with more development time, and a different means of interacting with companions.

On my first playthrough, I did the Knotwood Hills last, and so had almost no chance to get to know Sigrun... everything was over soon after that. I like Anders too, but he feels too much like "Alistair couldn't make it so he sends his understudy"... with a bit of Zevran naughtiness thrown in....

Since on my second and current playthrough I missed starting the conspiracy storyline at all (by not talking to Anders or Ser Whatshername at the fealty ceremony) I'm curious what'll happen...

And I think Alec the miserable-shepard-turned-heroic-knight would make an interesting story on its own... maybe in DA4...

I agree, that Anders seems a bit like Alistair, but in mage form. I still like them both though. I havent played DA2 yet, but Anders is my favorite mage companion out of the Origins mages, and yes, I read about how Bioware butchered him in DA2. I guess I'm just fond of companions with a sense of humor. I like a bit of laughter in my rpgs.

On occasion, Anders has his moments where he really needs a fist in the mouth, or tape over it during party banter.

With Sigrun, I like how she brings energy to the group and her "perky" personality.  She has some funny dialogue with Anders and Nathaniel, like when Nathaniel mentions how she's perky, and she tells Anders that the ceremony prior to joining the Legion of the Dead ends with an orgy, which Anders actually believes at first.

I just finished my first Awakening playthrough today, and I agree, it was a pretty solid side story. The political side was definitely interesting, having to deal with keeping the Peasants content and making sound decisions as a judge. Unfortunately there really was little of it.

The companions were pretty good. Definitely liked Nathaniel and Sigrun. Anders was cool, but I couldn't shake off the Alistair 2.0 vibe from him. I really disliked Velana. Essentially all the nastiness of Morrigan without any redeeming qualities. I will say though, I hated what they did with Oghren.

But yeah, the expansion was buggy as hell. I missed out on Sigrun's Companion Quest because I did the smuggling mission to early. <_<

Yeah, the Anders in Awakening is pretty awesome. That's why there are so many complaints about the Anders in Dragon Age II =\\. I thought Sigrun and Nathaniel were cool. Nathaniel was pretty sensible in my opinion. It's too bad you don't get to talk to your companions like you could in the Party Camp, but it's just an expansion =). You'll like it if you liked Origins. I thought Velana was okay. She can change a little and be more sensible (If you choose so).

Strictly from a story standpoint, Awakening is amazing. But it falls short in a few other areas. But bear in mind that it's an expansion. It doesn't pretend to be anything more. As someone else said: If you see it for what it actually is, it's rather good.

It's not DLC length. It's a full blown, 20-30 hour expansion pack with dozens of brand new areas, an uncountable number of new items, abilities, skills etc.

It's worth 30 bucks, easily.

It's cheaper than 30 bucks for sure. I saw a physical copy of DA; Ultimate Edition brand new for only $30 so I'm guessing Awakening alone is much cheaper.

My top reasons for loving Awakening:

1) Nathaniel, Anders + Ser Punce-a-Lot and Sigrun are full of win.
2) New specializations are really nice and fun.
3) Story wise can't be compared to Origins but I like how Awakening expands on Warden ending the Blight =/= Darkspawn problems are gone. And the Architect is a really interesting character.
4) The political side of the story is a nice addition but I just wish that if the Warden is elevated to certain political status in Origins, then it is reflected in Awakening at least more than once. Sadly it is not.

Whether it's worth your money? If you enjoy Origins then Awakening is worth it imo.

Yeah I got my Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition for 30 and that came with every single DLC. I loved Origins and also liked Awakening. I didn't like the fact that Morrigan wasn't in it since I romanced her and absolutely loved her romance line and her character in general. A little off topic: Witch Hunt was way to short IMO but I did love the ending I ended up with(Following her into the Eluvian Mirror). I would love to see a new Dragon Age game come out that continues your character's story from Origins and allows you to import it. I need more Morrigan loving! :(

I've been playing Awakening for the past 2 days, and I really like it so far, haven't beaten it yet.

I like the new companions, new items, the abundance of side quests, albeit some of them are buggy.

One thing I REALLY liked is the personal storage chest in Vigil. I don't recall seeing one of them at your camp in Origins. I placed all of my leftover gifts from Origins and other seldom used items in the chest and it's so much nicer having room to loot items instead of destroying something to pick up something else.

One thing I didn't like is that we couldn't talk to the companions like we could at camp and in other places in Origins. Another thing I didn't like is having *you know who* die in the beginning even though she had a character video. She grew on me fast and then she was gone after 45 minutes.

And I hope some of these companions will make a return to DA3. I actually still have to play DA2, I'm waiting until I beat Origins and all of the Ultimate Edition content.
