If Mass Effect was a text-based adventure, the script would be far more dynamic and interesting.

Its not a job, its a f**king adventure!
You have no idea how much booze it took to purge the memories of working with pascal from my mind. Now I'm going to have to start all over again.
Could have been worse, I could have learnt Cobol.

Yeah theres a good reason Text adventures are rare.
I couldn't agree more. I think people are missing these things primarily due to nostalgia.
Computers have limitations. If you're going to play videogames, one just has to accept that and move on, or play tabletop games. Or freeze yourself until non-homicidal nerdy gamemaster AIs are created who have interest in playing with slow reacting fleshy things.
You know, because it's more authentic to play with slow reacting fleshy things. No AI is a real fan unless they play it with real organics.

Remember Horizon? Remember how similar the reactions between Ashley and Kaidan towards Shepard's reappearance were? Most likely, BioWare did it because they were lazy, electing to reuse camera angles between cutscenes in order to save time. Cutscenes take up a lot of time, not to mention all of the voice acting required, too.
Now, let's say that Mass Effect was a text-based adventure, not unlike the adventure games which were developed during the 1980s. The writers would be far less constrained by the resources available to the cinematics and art teams. They can write more, create more conversations, expand on subplots, etc, without having to record lines or have the cinematics team do its tedious work.
Hence, the writers can write more, record more conversations for the player to read, and perhaps, flesh out the in-game romances and friendships to a level of detail that cannot be realized by the current conventions of game development.
It would also be a much better game (if you like to read).
Basically you're saying developers are lazy. Yup I agree.

Actually I don't find the OP's comments trollish at all. I believe that in ME2 Bioware did lose its way somewhat. They focused on combat and graphics rather than the story. ME for me has always been about the story, the graphics and combat never really mattered.
In fact, I was just talking with a friend of mine about this the other day. She too is a die hard ME fan. We both agree that it's the story that makes ME great. The combat and graphics don't really matter at all. In fact, I would have been happier if ME2 changed nothing gameplay wise compared to ME and just added more story. The story definitely felt weaker in ME2 than in ME.
Because let's be honest, ME sucks as a shooter, it's never going to be that. It's an RPG, and I hope that now with the combat and graphics worked out in ME2 that Bioware focuses more on the story and RPG elements in ME3.
Quoted for truth.

Hmm I do think that the ME series actually do a pretty good job at combining shooter parts with RPG elements.
We probably have different interpretations of the "optimal" ratio of shooter parts vs. RPG parts but I kinda like the general concept. Basically I like the option to have fun in the shooter parts and more serious thinking in the RPG mode. Depending on my mood.

Not that its necessarily a bad thing but we HAVE seen with DA 2 that some of these 'modernizations/innovations/stepping to the future' things can ruin Rpgs and I really really hope Bioware can find some balance between it.
Perhaps they could keep all of their games at the technology level of Mass Effect 1 and 2 and just hope that they get a massive enough budget that they can still have good graphics and simplified features but still have many complicated outcomes, Rpg features and large amounts of variable immersive content?
Rpg development is some complicated stuff....
EDIT: A little more on-topic I'd say that a text adventure is taking it a little too far, I believe they should just find a compromise.
I think that it is possible to make a game that all audiences (casual and hardcore) can enjoy (even if they haven't found that balance yet) and I think they can still make a lot of money without disappointing the hardcore Rpgers and they can still make meaningful deep memorable immersive experience awesome game majiggies.
They just haven't quite achieved that yet (Dragon Age 2 was rushed and oversimplified, the Mass Effect series has been AWESOME but with a bigger budget its capable of even more greater things in the future)

I'm not one of those people. I wan't my gameplay experience be as good as my interest on story.
Players allways have this nostalgia. I remember how I had fun with the "old" game. Players never thinked that maybe it's not the game, but person who played the game has changed in years. Like example sooner or later every player don't find games good anymore, because they have played so many same kind of games allready. There isn't anything new interesting in them anymore. So, they start feel like good old days. It's not that old was better, it's that you as player was new with games in general.

I am not trolling. I am just saying that if ME were text-based, then the story would be that much richer because the writers can incorporate so much more without being constrained by what the art department or the cinematics team can crunch out.
Then you're a fool.
Sure, a text-based ME with the same budget as the existing ME could have a lot of writing. The problem is that no such game could exist. It wouldn't sell, and nobody would be stupid enough to try and make one.

If this is a sly joke about RPG purists who think any change from labor-intensive gaming is a betrayal of the fanbase, it's brilliant.
If not, it's disturbing.
