So as the game isn't out yet this wil be merely speculation.

From what I've heard Vega is being portrayed as a regular soilder who is rather new to the whole scene.
How do you guys think he gets to be part of Shepard's (who may be one of the most notable people of the reaper battle) team?

You can see he is onboard the Normandy with the VS after trial and Reaper invasion, so did he have a role with the trial or with the alliances retrofitting of the Normandy or was he simply a soldier who the ship picked up and they decided to bring along?

Speculations please?

He was probably overwhelmed by the Reaper invasion and got swept up with Shepard.

Kinda like how ME1 had those nameless uniformed Alliance soldiers who only moved at makeshift bomb that one time? Except Vega goes out on missions and stumbled into being a part of an elite force of specialists who're the only hope for the galaxy.

He's probably some guy who happened along one day.

He was probably just assigned to the Normandy before it got hijacked and used to rescue Shepard from Earth.

Maybe he was part of the tech crew that studied the Normandy, although I don't know what a marine would do there. Maybe he is Ash new lover :).

BTW: I'd have preferred it if they had kept his original name: Sanders.
And every two minutes, someone (e.g. Anderson) asks if he is related to Kahlee Sanders and he gets all annoyed about having to explain again that he is not and there is such a thing as having the same surname without being related.

And Shepard kept him around because Shep likes keeping strays.

Ashley mentions a 'James' in a letter to her sister. So might be a possible connection there.

I wonder what class he is... do you think he'll be a Soldier if Ash is dead or a Sentinel if Kaidan is?

Nah, he's the Joe-Everyone because in a cast full of exceptional people the everyguy is needed.

Also, see Jacob.

I'm thinkin Vega was sent back in time to keep the Reapers from killing Commander Shepard, and then while he is here he's gonna end up hooking up with Shep's mom and making his son, who he will one day go back in time (again) to save.

I can't support this theory.  The 'James' in her letter is a reference to a Bioware employee that moved departments or something.  Also, James is a highly common name, at least in 2011.

For the love of god, why does everyone have to try and make connections with everyone? Its a big galaxy filled with different people not everyone is going to have a previous connection with one of the main characters or a secret past with them.

My Specualtion. Vega is charged with escorting Shepard to his trial. Vega is reluctant in bringing the Commander to trial because he believes in shepards cause and believes that Shepard is doing the right thing. However he follows orders and when all hell breaks loose offers to aid shepard in his quest.

Maybe?

...it's not a bad idea. He could be a Thane-like character who's one class but with different powers (Thane was an Infiltrator with Warp; Vega could be a Soldier with Overload or something).

Aside from the epic Terminator referance he would have already failed, if you remember a certain opening to ME2... but seeing as death is apparently a non-issue for Shepard I guess James is going have a real boring job.

I agree.

I don't like the idea of throwing in some nondescript everyman onto the team (eating up a space that a former companion could have filled). But if we have to have Vega, I'd like the guy to not have any tie to anyone.

Of course, I'm still hoping Vega's the redshirt for ME3.

Couldn't agree more. Seriously, screw this guy bring Wrex back or hell toss in Captain Kirrahe, he'd be a badass squadmate.

What I think the real question here is how he will 'reflect' the 'perspective'  of a new 'player'.

"According to BioWare, James Vega will reflect the perspective of a new player coming to the franchise."

He'll ask questions everyone already knows the answer to and say things that everyone already knows.

Expect him to be Captain Boring McExposition.

yeah i don't think i will be using him if he does keep asking questions about the places, things, etc. unless they cut all the qustions out for the people who have played the other 2 ME's.

As long as they give the old crew equal in quantity, good-quality dialogue to his hours of idiotic questioning, I have no qualms Posted Image

Yep, he's getting **** duty, i.e. walking codex entry.

I can already tell my Shepard's going to keep this clown stuffed into the Normandy custodial closet and never bother to go speak with him, his newbie shtick will get old really fast

I think the only thing I'll have to say to him is "where were you when I was blowing up Virmire?"

Too bad we won't get the option to shove him in the air lock and get back an old squadie. Or time travel back to virmire and nuke the ******.

Freakin new comers, man. Quit being lazy and go play the first two games. Who the hell picks up a game thats second or third in the series and goes "Derp, I don't want to play the first ones. Quick everyone tell me whats going on!" Of course you'll be lost. I wish Bioware didn't make everything all noob friendly.

See, that always depends on how it is executed. I am just rereading "The Great Hunt", the second book of wheel of time series and there is this wonderful scene with the rather big, slow and deliberate but extremely talkative Ogier Loial. He goes to great length to explain tp some of the main characters some concepts established in the first book, giving the reader a recap of what's going on and how everything works. It fit's his character perfectly because he loves reading books and talking about what he has read. Best part is, the scene ends with one of the other characters telling him to shut up already and he is abashed about that.
So I'm saying, if you can couple these recap moments with character moments, they must not be just annoying add-ins. Of course, someone who is already familiar with the IP will recognize that this is a recap but since it is also a character moment, it doesn't really matter.
I am not saying this works all the time, in fact I think it cannot be done more than once or twice but if done well, it can be fun.
