NPC Outfits

Are the NPCs and companions going to have sensible and contextually appropriate outfits this time round?
I ask because I had heard that they were but then I saw the picture of Ashley with her hair down over her face in a combat situation and I was a bit like "wtf?"
I hope there is some contextual explanation for that and she ISNT like that most of the game.
I found it horribly jarring and stupid in ME2 when you are going into a combat situation straight from the normandy and Miranda pastes on a Catsuit and puts on high heels, and Jack wears pretty much nothing at all.
By rights both should die fairly quickly and fairly often. In some places I could understand it, say if you are on the Citadel, or Illium, and you end up fighting and what not. Given those places are "peaceful" having an NPC/Companion in casual gear makes sense.
It does not make sense when you are on planets with a toxic atmosphere or in places where you are exposed to vacumn. No sense at all, because mass effect fields (which was the stupidass explanation for it) according to lore do not prevent the movement of air molecules across them (so the person inside doesnt suffocate I assume), and skin is porous - on a planet (like that swamp planet with the blood pack mercenaries) with a toxic atmosphere the toxins would seep through the skin and kill the NPC who is exposed, the same would happen with skin exposed to vacumn.
Miranda, Samara, Jack, and Thane are the ones who all offend on this issue.
Ideally I think that NPCs should be like Shepard; have their own casual outfits that they wear on the ship, or in non-combat situations, and their armour and helmets (none of this mass effect field mask thing where a persons face and eyes are exposed to toxins or vacumn) for wearing in likely battle situations or dangerous environments.

Miranda: Shepard, this is a new Cerberus weave. I need freedom of movement to use my biotics and I do have barriers. I also feel opponents underestimate me when they see me and I can 'distract' them.
Samara: This the long standing type of clothing that a Justicar wears Shepard. It is imperative that I am comfortable. I find armour impedes my movement and Biotic use. In any case, if I cannot win a battle via my biotics I am dead anyway.
Thane: No wonder I can hear you clomping along 100 metres away Shepard. I deal in stealth and armour is of no use to me. My skill is to be unseen and unheard, thank you for the offer but I will not need armour.

How does a character lose their shields or barriers? By getting hit by constant gunfire, or overload/warp.
How does a character get hit by constant gunfire, or overload/warp? By not fighting smart, by being out of cover at a really bad time, and by not using team manneuvers to kill groups of enemies quickly.
Shepard's squad is a group of the absolute best fighters in the galaxy. They are trained to not find themselves in the situations listed above. This is well-represented with the in-game mechanics. If you command and understand your squad well, they will almost never lose their shields, much less die.
In Mass Effect, the traditional winner of a fight is the side that has the best tech/weapons, the most experience, the most skill, and most importantly: the best tactics. In Mass Effect 2, that side is you.
If you let Miranda's crappy AI compel her into near CQC, then yes, you're going to wonder why she isn't wearing combat armor. But let me give you a hint: She'd still get romped in that situation even if she was fully armored/helmed. If you command her well, she will almost never get hit, thus shields are enough. If you find your companions are constantly dropping dead around you, you're doing something wrong, and not even armor would save them.
To accentuate my point, simply look at how many people we've seen get totally owned even while wearing armor. Blue Suns, Eclipse, Krogan, Batarians, Shepard if you don't play smart, Jenkins, and Garrus, and that's off the top of my head.
Combat armor is extremely overrated in these arguments. People act like it's an invincible death-ward. It's really there to make sure the wearer doesn't get instantly killed in the event their shields drop. Look at how close Shepard gets to death if he/she is still taking shots after his/her shields drop. It's not that awesome, and it's certainly not necessary.

of course! because all of them are also totally immune to harsh environments theough biotics (which by lore do not work against radiations and such)....their barriers NEVER DROP and they are never hit with their shields down right? oh and Miranda's boobs magically affect mechs and geths not to mention she is not nearly as trained as Shepard or the asary vanguards who can use biotics with full armor on....no no, she needs to be limber and free!
oh and Thane....are you kidding me? no one EVER sees him on the field since he uses his awesome stealth so much....he never gets hit either, he just dodges bullets ala Albert Wesker
yeah totally

Why? He's either going to get bashed by a bunch of whiny forum members like you for starting a new thread, or a moderator will lock the thread he searches for claiming necro. You guys need to be a little more considerate. More and more people on here are starting to become like the Bungie community, a place where all they do is bicker and fight. Grow up.

Soooo Shepards outfits resist against harsh environments? Wearing some football shoulder pads and some plastic cylon like thigh guards?
Have they ever went into detail just why the armour that is worn by shep and some of the other armoured guys is so effective?
There comes a point where where form does rule over function in a video game. If you want things to be totally realistic then each character is going to be heavily armoured and wear the same outfit with a full helmet and face shield. Is that what you would like for the sake of reality, having all members look exactly the same?
My previous post was made in a jestful manner about how each of those people might respond. You can dismiss a few of them but some like Jack for instance are perfectly acceptable. When dealing with a squad that has been assembled not everyone is going to want to wear heavy armour and a helmet and the player should not be able to force them to wear it.
As has been stated before there is a trade off when creating unique looking companions with unique bodies. You can taylor make their look so they are very distinctive and limit their outfits or you can make all of their bodies genereic within their species and have all sorts of outfits. Either way someone will not be happy, right?

I'd rather have all my squaddies wear proper armor ala ME1.
Shepard's armor is a hardsuit, medium or heavy depending on the composition one picks but it IS a full armor (and no plastic involved really, also in the ME1 codex bioware went out of its way to explain about full armor, flexibility, movement and layers)
There is no sensein creating awesome lore and sticking to it in one game only to toss it all down the toilet in the sequel in favor of the rule of cool
oh wait sorry, in favor of unique looks....hey remember LOTSB? Remember the appearance packs? (especially miranda and thane) they showed us we can get unique looks without them being ridiculous
and that's all people want really

Funny, I don't remember reading any Codex entry saying anything about the armor being made of plastic. However, I do remember Shepard walking around in low atmosphere or unbreathable atmosphere in a fully sealed and armored hardsuit, and being just fine. Also, as per the lore, kinetic barriers stop fast moving projectiles, so armor is needed for hazards that are not fast moving projectiles. You know, things like acid spit, charging krogan, vicious alien fish-dog bites, and maybe shrapnel. All of these threats travel at speeds below the threshold of a kinetic barrier, so they would not get repelled by one. Hence the need for armor.
