I'd say the Mass Effect lore is more intriguing and promising, but the Dragon Age lore is more accomplished and better upheld by the games.

I like them both personally. I prefer Mass Effect over Dragon Age.

The way the devs did Mass Effect trumps all in my view. No other game has events that will play out over a course of three games. DA sorta did it, but it is not on the same level. Because DA:O really does not affect DA2.

Even Casey Hudson said that they probably won't be doing that again either. In referring to Mass Effect and having ME choices affect ME2 and those two games affecting ME3.

Dragon Age

I prefer Thedas and DA's lore over Mass Effect's. I also find the writing simply better in the Dragon Age games.

ME universe due to better implementation. In the ME universe, people seem to be good at their job. in DA2, not so much. The lack of competence brings down the universe since it opens the door to "Why is "X" that way if they are too stupid to do "Y"?" questions =(

I want to like both equally.

I enjoy both genres, however thinking about it I find ME more orignal than DA. Much of the DA universe has been applied on previous francises (Dwarfs, Elves, Dragons, Trolls, Dungoens...), where ME has many orignal concepts.

You go ahead and try to create creatures that aren't used in fantasy stories and games yet. They also have to be interesting enough for the player.

Take the ME races and put them in armor with swords?

Personally, I think the Dragon Age universe is better, but this may just be a result of the fact that I like it better. Dragon Age does actually mix up some fantasy tropes, but all Mass Effect does is take the fantasy tropes, set them in "the future", and give them science-fictiony names. I found most of the ME themes (Organics vs. inorganics) to be just plain silly if you think about them for five minutes together, whereas Dragon Age has some actually interesting and relevant under-themes going for it.

I suppose that's really the difference between the two series from my point of view: Mass Effect seems to have better surface implementation than Dragon Age in a lot of respects. Whereas if you really seriously delve into Mass Effect, it starts to look INCREDIBLY stupid. Dragon Age looks pretty goofy on the superficial level, but if you look past that it actually holds together pretty well.

The ME setting is better.
But Dragon Age: Origins is better than both ME games

I like ME's lore a little bit more but I still love DA's lore since Thedas is a fascinating place. This kind of comparison is something that is purely subjective.

Of course it's subjective, that's the whole point. What I'm interested in and the reason for the post is why people prefer one over the other. Image IPB

i think DA has more potential.  but mostly because ME is set in a real world sci-fi future.  its a progression of our history so certain progressions have to be rooted in believability.  once you accept a fantasy settign its easy to accept all the changes that coincide.  like andrastes ashes being real and having healing qualities, and other things of that nature.  when a huge flesh golem forms itself, or when a giant rock tries to kill you, you are hardly suprised.  it doesnt ring as unrealistic.

that being said, i think the writers have done a better job with ME than they have DA in both titles.  there are too many inconsistencies.  there are way too many things that are not concrete or that have been contradicted from one title to the next and even just in origins itself if you play close attention.  the import function helps a lot too.  its way more effective in ME than it is in DA.  as much as your choices mattered in origins, it doesnt feel like they mattered at all as pertaining to carrying over into dragon age 2.  like the choice to make the chief cause of all the problems anders.  to some players he shouldnt even be alive.  there is no continuity.  this does not feel like the case in ME.  your decisions in ME1 have real effects in 2.  making it more like one big game than two titles in a series.

so in the end, based on writing, i would have to say the writers of ME have written a better universe for their game than the writers of dragon age have for theirs. i still love dragon age though.  just think its a notch below is all.

I also think the DA-verse has more potential, with very interesting (I don't dare say unique - for all I know, very similar things are around elsewhere that I don't know about) takes on staples of the fantasy genre (elves, dwarves, magic etc.) and great opportunities for intriguing stories and characters. As I see it, its potential lies in exploring the interesting world of Thedas, its present history and its future - in short, to tell whole chronicles worth of events. On the other hand, ME has a good setting too, but it seems to be more about exploring a single big overarching story and a single important character (IE Shepard). That's not bad at all, but the former interests me more.

However, whether DA will end up using this potential or not remains to be seen. The overarching goal in DAO was admittedly somewhat generic, but it was covered in interesting themes within the individual quests (elves vs. werewolves, templars vs. mages etc.), and delivered all that with good execution and made the character feel important even if he/she didn't influence every little detail. DA2 also had interesting themes, but on a lesser and (attempted) longer scale - the latter, in my opinion, failed somewhat (time skips were often awkward/didn't make sense). In addition, the execution was flawed, and the interesting bits were overshadowed by the player's complete inability to influence even small things. And also, it seems that DA2 is steering the franchise in an ME-ish direction - something it shouldn't have to be, when it can just as easily be its own thing, and thus, provide something fresh instead.

So, so far, I think DA hasn't lived up to all it could be yet (DAO and DAA were close, DA2 less so) and even risk deviating from its original formula by copying needlessly from other sources (in addition to ME, it feels like DA2 also took a fair bit of inspiration from JRPGs; the over-the-top animations - which I personally didn't mind - weapon/armor/character designs and lack of meaningful choices - which BW, ironically, has made fun of before). ME, in comparison, has largely stayed true to itself. I like the DA setting better, but ME is more consistent. I'll have to wait for more DA games to make a conclusive choice, though.

I've been a big fan of Bioware games for many years. Loved what they did with KOTOR. Now as they released DA and ME in quick sucession of each other I can't decide which has the better set up (PC, NPC, Villians, Storyline..etc).
I've done more ME playthoughs than DA and I curious as to what the next installment of ME will be, but there is always something that holds my interest with DA.

I'm interested in what other people think.

For me Mass Effect universe is better then Dragon Age universe, and both of them are better then any other RPG.

DA for me. Better characters, lore and just a better setting. After ME2, the ME series lost a lot of points for me.

Dragon Age, as its lore and universe is far more engrossing and interesting by a very wide margin. The writing is also superior, and the series' characters and its socio-political structure feels considerably more vibrant and dynamic.

Dragon Age. It's universe is grand, the writing team is brilliant. I find the inclusion of fascinating references to the real world within the cultures, religions, believes, philosophy, ideology which are in game to be very intriguing. The Chantry seems to be similar to the old Christian church, seen on how religion is the dominating power within the world. The Qunari also stand as an example of how very interesting the world of Thedas is exactly. Another thing would be the worlds characters, whom I also adore very much.

The DA universe is just better written, more complex and always for stories that are meatier. You can really sink your teeth into the lore, the characters are varied and you can tell all sorts of stories in the universe with thousands of different shades to them.

But in the ME universe is set in space. SPACE THE FINAL FRONTIER! Also lots of other little things.

So being a huge geek I'ma call it even.

Both universe are well written and provide the player interesting concepts to think and ponder over. But I feel dragon age as a series took quite a hit after DA2 and ME is simply the better one right now.

You know, I was going to say Mass Effect, since the ever escalating hierarchy of depressing revelations just got on my nerves in Dragon Age 1, and I'm a sucker for sci-fi settings that don't make a big deal out of the fact they're set in space. But whilst I honestly enjoy both settings equally, I'd mirror what everyone else is saying: DA's setting is just that much deeper. Heck, there's coherent back story going back centuries, religious schisms and all manner of international contrast going on. Every alien species in ME tends to come across as being much like humans, "but X". They're military, or accountants, or they speak in the third person, and that's largely it.

I prefer the ME universe more than DA universe

because I am very much into my Star Wars and love my gadgets in real life rather than stuff like lord of the rings.

I can also imagine myself more in the mass effect universe than the dragon age one for one I cant stand camping and I wouldn't like the smells etc in the DA universe whereas Mass Effect universe I would always be amazed
