I never saw the appeal of the Dragon Age universe (as such) before Dragon Age 2. It was very creatively written, absolutely, but steeped in such a wholly generic context, void of visual invention, that I could never grow to appreciate its world on anything but the most base level.
DA2 certainly made up for that, and with the promise of this new direction, it's a far more interesting place to be.

However, I'm a sucker for proper futuristic fiction, and I do love the universe of Mass Effect as it actually manages to set itself apart from its influences, rather than simply falling victim to the most common tropes; checking boxes.

It comes down to a simple matter of personal sensibility, and I'm simply more receptive to Mass Effect and its minute visual presentation.
But I am very fond of both.

Both universes are equally appealing to me. I don't even see the point in comparing them since I don't have to choose between them, I can just enjoy them both for what they are.

I like ME's lore a little bit more but I still love DA's lore since Thedas is a fascinating place. This kind of comparison is something that is purely subjective.

Of course it's subjective, that's the whole point. What I'm interested in and the reason for the post is why people prefer one over the other. Image IPB

Well I prefer sci-fi to medieval fantasy but not by much,  I love both fictional genres.

The ME universe is a bright future of our galaxy that I actually look forward to seeing: multiculturalism, scientific revolutions, new frontiers.

The DA universe represents all our misguided failures of the past that need to DIAF: religious prosecutions, racism, wars over petty ideologies.

I tried playing ME and just couldnt get into it, mostly cause im just so bad at shooters that i could barely play it on easy. Saying that i know many people who do play ME and talk about it as much as i talk about DA so i think both are very good, because Bioware is good.

ME took me a while to get into as well, especially since I had been playing DA right before, but I'm so in love now. Once you get the hang of the shooter (a system much improved on in 2, IMO) and more into the story (things started really picking up after I got Liara for me) it's a seriously amazing ride.

What a cool way to look at it :)

It's about the lore and the setting, not the games. How does the lore significantly change from one game to the other. There WERE lore breaking things. But the lore in general is still as solid because it was written pre-DA2 :D

^ This is the reason I prefer DA-verse, I didn't think about the games themselves, just the lore and setting. If I'd think about the games too, then ME would win by a mile, but now, because I'm much more forgiving towards fantasy than to Scifi, and I prefer certain kind of scifi and because DA-verse kind of reminds me of Praedor (a finnish fantasy comic, reaaally good setting in that one, and DA-verse has quite many things in common with it.)

I love this comment, "I hate camping so ME gets my vote". Image IPB

I like this view as well, however racism does cover both universes. In DA, elves are considered a lower race. In ME it's the Quarians who are treated as a lower race, and Cerbarus' alien hate disguised as Pro-human progression.

What I do prefer about ME over DA is the fact that humans are NOT considered the highest/dominant/intelligent/powerful race, but they do feel intitled to be and constantly struggle to get there.
With the DA universe humans hold all the cards, most of the powerful positions are held by humans and they excert the will over the other races. The only race (as a whole) that defy that are the Qunari.

I prefer the fantasy genre over sci-fi, and mass effect is one of the few sci-fi series that have sparked my interest. By that account i think the mass effect universe is very good. The Dragon Age universe on the other hand was bland for me at first, and only after doing several origins playthroughts i started to like it. I believe it has potential, but after seeing DA2 i can´t help but think that it will be wasted.

I honestly believe that a global war in Thedas, multiple cultures and nations fighting, and perhaps multiple nations as locations to visit will be the shot in the arm the series needs.

It'll be big, vast, epic, and bursting with dozens of different cultures, ideas, and a strong story weaving them all together.

Exploration, battlefields, seiges, and dark mysteries unearthed as the entire world is set on fire by one of the most destructive wars in Thedas's history.

That could really be a boost to the series after the alright Awakening, meh Golems, terrible Witch Hunt, and just ok DA2.

And if it isn't? ....well, shelf the series. Bring out a new IP and hope for better returns in the sequels....but continue doing Mass Effect, dear god I love those games!

I think the DAO universe is as equally interesting as the ME universe. DA2 doesn't have a universe, however - simply a boring city with all the lore being told through codex entries.

I prefer the DA universe. The ME games illustrate their universe better than the DA games do.

Over the next few DA games and expansions, I want to spend and hour or 2 in Tevinter, Orlais, Antiva, Rivain, Par Vollen. I want to walk through an Eluvian.

I can do without revisiting Denerim, Orzammar, Deep Roads, Dalish Camps, Fade, #$@$ing KIRKWALL, Amaranthine.

I love both, but I give a slight edge to ME. You can play through it without clawing your eyes out *cough**fade and orzammar**cough*.

The fade can be pretty tiring, but Orzammar and the Deep Roads grew on me.

Hmm I think the real quesiton in this thread that needs to be asked is who would win in a 3 way battle between Commander Shepard, the Warden, and Hawke. My money is on Commander Shepard.

Hard to say...Although i like DA more than ME, I don't know about which universe is more interesting...I think Dragon Age (excluding DA2) is a better world setup (races and countries and setting and culture), but ME has a more interesting history and sinister origins (the Reapers systematically wiping out the races of the galaxy every 50 thousand years opposed to the Maker creating the Fade, and mages defiling heaven and Andraste).

They are both great spins on classic tropes. That's what makes Bioware, well, Bioware. They blow the dust off genres that have become stale.

As for which universe is better. I have to go with Dragon Age. The lore is so rich. It's lovely, really. Turning elves into Native American tribes. The dwarves still have that old fantasy to them, but I love the caste system and the politics. The Deep Roads. The Legion of the Dead. Dead kingdoms. And then there's the politics of mages, and all of the countries that have such distinct, yet very real, cultures. That mix of fantasy and history of our own culture.

I don't feel like Mass Effect has really even scratched the surface of their lore. There's so much more that can be done in that universe besides having a soldier save the world from robot aliens.

Apples and Oranges as many have said.

For me it is Mass Effect but that doesn't mean it's better than Dragon Age's setting.

I do like the large variety of fascinating new races in Mass Effect while Dragon Age only really brought the Quanari to the table (though they are cool).

I slighty prefer ME lore and universe to DA lore and universe. My hope for DA3 is to see more of Thedas (especially Nevarra and Tevinter).
