ME. Most sci fi games out there lack in the story department. ME fills a gap that severely needed filling. DA is rather forgettable in that regard. The setup is good, I like the DA games. But its more from an element of creating different class combos and just playing through. The story didn't engage me. And beyond the origins (essentially just a prologue), the game is the same over and over. And the story in DA2 didn't exactly jazz things up.
While the game is pretty much the same after the origin story the perspective the origin story can give you can vary greatly. When I am playing as a human noble I am going to have a much different perspective of the world than say a dalish elf or a dwarf commoner. And my decision making is sometimes reflected in that perspective.

That's you superimposing on the game, it has nothing to do with game design. The game is still the same, you run through the fade, play in the forest, chase a kid through a castle and trump through the deep roads. Everytime. Not saying that's not the same thing happening in ME. Its just that, the ME environment is less done. Its not new, but its certainly less prominent, especially in a (semi) RPG setting. Games like this don't have the story to match the action. Its nice someone finally took up the challenge to fill that niche.

And the Illusive Man has more style? Flemeth can turn into a dragon and might even BE a dragon. She makes jokes about her age and is constantly snarking at you. Also look at her introduction in DA2. You can't get more stylish than that.

I think it's a bit too much to expect the developers to make the game run a completely different path just because you chose whatever Origin. Development costs aren't what they used to be.

I'd say that counts as badass concept art.

Mass Effect, on the other hand, is one of my favourite sci-fi universes of all time, not just in video games. That's only my opinion, but I just find it less bleak, more interesting and more original.

Mass Effect's universe is well done, but the setting doesn't feel as fleshed out as it should. All the races are pretty much what they are at face value and anything else about them is reduced to lines of text in the codex. It's all about the Reapers. The plot however, is head and shoulders above Dragon Age. You feel involved and immersed in what's going on. You play as your character making sense of a single, focused conflict. So ME is my choice for plot.
But that's probably deliberate on Bioware's part. Dragon Age is a series where you slowly peel the layers of mystery over the installments and Mass Effect is your Hollywood Blockbuster with a single plot that moves at the appropriate pace.
And Kate Mulgrew's voice is just a joy to listen to. Martin Sheen can't beat that.

Flemeth is "mysterious"and can turn into a dragon, which just isn't so great..
I always wanted ask The Illusive Man though - What brand of ciggies does he prefer?
I need a codex entry about that in ME3.

ME was always a shooter. Maybe you just didn't realize it? Not going to comment on ME2 being less story-based than ME1. I don't even know where you get that. Because it didn't have a new antagonist? They did drop some RPG mechanics, too many IMO.fchopin wrote...
The game became a shooter and it was no longer a story based game.
I like the ME universe but i want to play a story based rpg game and ME2 failed in that regard.
Anyway... I'm sure which universe you prefer comes down to whether you like swords and castles more than guns and spaceships. I'll take the former any time. However, I think the story got less complex and interesting in DA2. I'll wait to see how it develops, but some of the premises of the mage-templar war are really straining credibility. I also think I'll be less interested in the other cultures than in Ferelden with its Anglo-Saxon'ness.
Both universes are pretty generic, as they must be to have mass market appeal and adapt to the gimmicky nature of gameplay.

Flemeth might very well be a dragon, has a sense of humor, hair horns, and a badass laugh. She's a batty old lady who pulls off conversation with style.Tirfan wrote...
On TIM vs. Flemeth, TIM wins, fancy suit, ciggies, weird eyes, what can I say, the guy is magnificent.

TIM... just sits around lying to you or justifying his agenda and incompetent organization.
Flemeth wins in personality.

DA U I like the idea of it, but I dont think there has been a game that has gotten as realized as the novels yet. DAO had great story and a world that seemed vast, but with not much in it. The gameplay was bad, but I played it to get to the story. DA2 had vastly improved gameplay where Button = awesome, BUT then you had pop in enemies, recycled maps and you were trapped in an unchanging box for supposedly 10 years that had no weather changes, seasons, no people doing anything interesting, but standing in the same spot wearing the same clothes 24/7, all the shops in the same place, no new shops or people or animals etc. Only 2 guards in the city at night... The new characters were great once they start opening up and talking to each other(Merril+Avaline+ Isabella). Story wasnt bad, though there were inconsistances, players had no choice in game, just able to affect tone of conversations... It's just not there yet. The combat would be perfect if there was no pop in enemies and they gave me my Blizzard spell back. They just need to add custom armor for party members, a world instead of a city, what I mentioned above with horse battles and it would be perfect. I'd actually love it over ME, but Bioware DA Team is lacking focus. My wet dream would be DA3 with Uncharted 2 or 3 level of detail in their environments.

Both are better in their own ways. I don't look for what I expect from DA in ME, or the other way round. Bioware however, wants to make DA into a ME in fantasy setting. I despise that.
Other than the implementation of the dialog wheel I don't see how they are turning DA into an ME clone.
