Not to get into a shallow debate with you, because he was probably the least shallow character in DA2 with the single largest affect, but the romance was very lacking. The romance, I do consider to be shallow in everything from the ways the lines are delivered to the way that he literally leaps the love word at you freely and keeps throwing these I'll hurt you lines... And the only way you can respond is like.. Oh yeah baby I like to be hurt. I get that there's time skips inbetween each dialogue, in the form of years... But only giving you the dialogue where he's practically repeating himself with the love professing is just weak in my opinion.
Think about it for five seconds and even that is the antithesis of shallow.
The entire purpose of the Anders romance is to set up and then systematically deconstruct popular romance tropes. Over the course of the romance, it dissects and highlights the very negative aspects of those tropes (e.g. hasty romanticism and devotion as they beget unhealthy self-destructive obsessions). Rather than glorifying them, as is typical of the romance genre, it shows you how those ostensibly admirable things could go horribly wrong, and how unhealthy it is. It is pretty much a textbook deconstruction in the way it is handled.
