The novels provide background and side events to the main story, much like the Star Wars Extended Universe stuff

yeah that would be cool, but if they did they couldn't assume that you already know who they are already not everyone's read the books and shepherds never met them.

In ME1 we learn that Anderson worked with Saren back in the day when Anderson was being considered for Spectre training. He explains how Saren showed no concern for innocent life and basically was the reason why he was never made a Spectre. That story formed the basis of the first book (some of it doesn't quite agree with Anderson's version to Shepard but that was just Anderson being economical with the truth
In ME2 Tali mentioned how Cerberus had attacked one of the ships of the Migrant fleet trying to capture a young human biotic who had taken refuge there. That story formed the basic of book 2.
Book 3, I think, happened during or after ME2 and involved the Illusive Man, Anderson and some characters introduced in the previous books. I'd be surprised if some of the events of the third book don't find their way into ME3. I'd also be surprised if we don't meet the young biotic who featured in book 2.
The books, the comics and the games all seem pretty integrated, I reckon.

The books are pretty trashy and badly written. I felt guilty reading such awful prose but wanted more mass effect. Kind of like a mum on holiday saying how glad she is to get some quality reading done, before tucking into a book with Fabio on the cover, dashing pirates and far too many mentions of heaving bosoms. You will have no claim to being proud of yourself but it will kill a few hours...and braincells.

Bolded for emphasis. I prefer Eric Nylund's Halo novels over this.

I doubt the new author came up with the plot. He was probably given guidelines about what to write the story about. I enjoyed the books, but the writing wasn't great, or particularly good.

I liked the books /shrug
The only thing I don't like is that most of whats in them won't have a huge effect on the next game... mostly because they can't assume that fans have read them (like they can assume you've played the last game).
There might be a few references to get our collective geek up, but nothing major.

Yup, poorly written indeed but still very enjoyable.

but they seem to make the decision that Shepard survived from ME2 and that the council is of mixed alien races.
