He didn't have to be a POV and quite frankly, I found him bland.

Oh, I totally agree. Also, his trip made the trip that Tyrion took useless. We saw the same places, through his eyes first. He added nothing to the story other than a somewhat hilarious end.

Well, Jon is potentially AA reborn (or so my crackpot theory goes), so he could always lead the way like that.

But my money is more seriously on Jon, Bran + another Stark (maybe Arya) warging into the dragons as a way to control them (and steal control) away from Victarion.

My question - how does this sit with you the reader? Does it still feel like fantasy, or more a retelling of medieval history? Is Martin's universe richer or poorer for it? How does the complete unflinching nature of it all leave you? China Meiville has described the slavish attachment to Tolkien-like worlds as "a wen on the arse of fantasy" - would you agree or disagree when looking at the world of Ice & Fire?

The fantasy, for me, is the magic, not the tone. It feels like medieval society the way medievals might have really seen it - the imagined witches and magic and spirits were, in this case all completely real, and it's cool to see. But it's fantasy that feels much more like our world but with magic.

Tolkien like worlds are just a yoke against creativity.

Victarion can't control them, because he can't blow the horn without dying.  I'm assuming it's set up so that only a fire-resistant Targ can blow the horn.

Tolkien like worlds are just a yoke against creativity.

What... I don't even...

On Theon/Reek someone suggested circumsicion rather than the full monty and I'm with that...

As for rape... Seems probable. Theon wanted to be a Stark. Ramsey wants to be Theon with his way with women. Remember in AFfC when they fell out over Pia and Kyra? My view is Ramsey doesn't really like women, can't perform with them so he uses Theon and other things... as sexual surrogates.

And yes, looking forward to both him and his dad getting theirs.

BTW Christopher Eccleston for Roose Bolton!!!

ADwD is a very good book and I liked it. I loved the storyline in the north, each chapters of it. I loved the shorter storyarches. I loved Tyrion chapters untill he leaves Volantis (then they dragged a little bit). The storyline in Mereen was somewhat meh. But the book completely miss any kind of climax and that's a problem after 5 years of wating. The way it ended on massive cliffhangers when things were getting really interesting was a little bit disappointing. I think that GRRM could have cut some fat from the big 3 and add a proper ending to the book.

I haven't read Harry Potter- explain please.

Dolores Umbridge is a character that Harry Potter fans hate more than Voldemort. She also used torture. In fact, she gave Harry Potter another scar on his hand reading, "I must not tell lies." Of course, Harry's second scar isn't acknowledged by the movies.

It doesn't really explain why he was befuddled at Ramsay's suggestion he warm Jeyne up, but I think we just aren't going to know for sure.

I haven't heard any casting news- where is this??

What did people think of the Children of the Forest?

There were some neat little things for readers of Dunk and Egg in this one, like Bran seeing a tall man kissing a woman under the weirwood in Winterfell (probably Ser Duncan and Nan), and Bloodraven being the three-eyed crow.

@Addai

Well quite apart from the fact that the suggestion took him aback... I mean it would, wouldn't it?

Not casting news... Just a suggestion.

I'm still trying to chase down the D&E books. One would think they'd have brought them altogether by now.

I put my money on he was befuddled by the concept of deflowering her - which would be a stain on Ramsay's honor (yeah, I threw up a little in the back of my throat typing that) to be the second man in his virgin bride, befuddled on the concept that he would DARE to think of having sex with Ramsay's bride at all - because he's just Reek, it rhymes with meek. I also got the vibe that he had been "used" by Ramsay by that "and the other thing" comment myself. Maybe it's because that is a concept that is easier to deal with than castration and eunichization (is that a word?)

I am still not entirely behind the Jon is Lyanna and Rhaegar's bastard instead of Ned's, not just because of my dislike of that idea, but if he was wouldn't he not have gotten his hand seriously burned fighting the first wight? Think to be the third head of the dragon you have to be slightly more fire resistant ;)

Not sure what I think of the Children to be honest... they sort of creep me out, and I like Meera and Jojen and I am afraid for them there...not too keen on Bran ending up alive with roots growing through him, either >:( I need more information, darn it.

I do think the cat is significant... if nothing else it was the tom Arya finally caught, but since we know that she can see through the eyes of the cats now and that she has a pretty face on she could be anywhere learning 3 new things everyday.

GRRM recently signed a deal to do that, after the 4th story comes out in anthology form.  They're out as graphic novels, too.

You have a Kindle, I think?  It looks like all of the anthologies have Kindle versions.

Dreamsongs II- "The Hedge Knight"
Legends II- "The Sworn Sword"
Warriors - "The Mystery Knight"- I especially like this one because the other stories in the book are great.  It put me on to Cecelia Holland, which is my next reading project.

The fourth will be in an anthology called Dangerous Women.  Fan speculation is that it will be about the Wolf Women, five Stark widows who were running Winterfell at one point.

Apparently only certain Targs get that ability- Viserys was burned to death, after all.  After Jon is resurrected as AA maybe he'll be fireproof.  Image IPB

I think Bran's fate is very melancholy, yes.  I worry about poor Hodor and the Reeds, too.

If he is resurrected (and I seriously hope he does or is NOT dead), I could see that happening as well.  I'm still of the mind that he is L & R's spawn.  The dream that Bran saw at the tree of his father praying the two boys (I'm assuming Jon & Robb) be like brothers really makes me believe Jon definitely isn't Ned's.  If he was, Robb & Jon would be brothers.

Might also mean he wished they felt as brothers besides actually being so.

L´s death description did really feel like a birth gone wrong however. So whether it´s Jon or not I´m quite sure she had a child with R.

Oh wait, this IS Victarion we're talking about.  lol  Anyway, I don't put much stock in his long-range planning skills.  Dude's more of a balls than brains kind of guy and I don't see him getting too far in his scheme.  Though I have to say, his chapters were some of my favorites just for their dark humor.

Ah... well, there's bad writing in every corner of the universe.  It's not Tolkien's fault.  Like Guy Gavriel Kay says, you take what you can of Tolkien and leave the rest.  I'm glad Tolkien inspired GRRM, for one.

You either have to subscribe to Amazon UK or some other Amazon you can't be a member of two at the same time.  But, as I said, this'll be fixed soon enough as there is a surge of GRR Martin over here and I bet within a few weeks all his back catalogue will be on Kindle here too.

Hey guys,

Might be a little off-topic here, but still.....just finished reading book numero four, and a damn fine book it was! :o

I'm finding myself more than somewhat intrigued by Littlefinger though, his motives and whatever he's planning. What do you guys think his eventual fate will be? Do you think he'll get his comeuppance?

I also can't decide if I like him or not, I mean on the one hand compared to the Lannisters he's kinda alright, but then he's also a bit creepy with Sansa and he was pretty much responsible for Ned Stark's death and I liked Ned Stark, but yet again a part of me wants to root for the cunning bad guy with the cool facial hair.

Good Luck and Stay Safe B)

Praise for GRR from one of Britain's best newspapers: www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/jul/26/george-r-r-martin-fantasy-reality

Glad I'm not the only one that saw some parallels between the Murdoch thingy and AGoT!!!:o

Just got back from the book signing.  I took a great close-up shot of GRRM signing and herp derp somehow it didn't take- I might have hit the wrong button because I was juggling camera and book as I prepared to have mine signed.  Damn.

Oh well, it was great fun.  About 900 people there, I heard the event organizers say.  GRRM spoke for a while and then the moderator asked pre-prepared questions.  A lot of it I had heard or read elsewhere, but one new thing was that he said part of his difficulty in unworking the "Meereenese knot" to get ADWD out was that he was trying to keep from introducting new POV characters and he found he couldn't.  Ser Barristan became a POV because of this decision.  As far as I'm concerned, Ser Barristan the Badass can have as many chapters as Martin wants to give him.

Got my book!  Seven hells, you guys are getting a wrist workout if you're reading this massive thing in hardback!

I am so jealous Addai! But good for you...

Agreed on Barristan. It was delightful to see things through his eyes. Good to have an older character POV, too. It is fortunate HBO cast him well.

Right now I see Barristan as the only hope for Danaerys being able to rule in the west (assuming she is successful in rising to the throne) so far she has displayed only ignorance about the land she wishes to rule and so far only Barristan has provided a fairly unbiased description of the reality of Westeros

He seems to have a rather significant lack of concern for life. I'm pretty sure he'd be burning slaves all night long, if he could and it meant dragons to strike at Euron.

His attempt at placating three gods (he burned seven women) were funny, in a distrubing sort of way.

It's not that the writing's bad per se... it's rather that they're a constraint on the imagination. Something like the Witcher is a deconstruction and GRRM had LoTR as an inspiration... but fantasy is such a potentially rich genre it's horrible to see everything constantly falling back to LoTR.
