@ Seagloom - seriously!!! Have we even SEEN an actual Other since the prologue of Book 1? We've seen wights, sure, but Others?

@ Nameless one - I'm hoping not. Not sure I want to see that much magic employed, when the series started with virtually none. However, my memory of that scene is that, while very indicative of Jon's death, it's not certain (could be wrong, still haven't finished a re-read). So he may simply be nursed back to health, which I can live with.

The other possibility is that Jon wargs into either Ghost or someone else nearby.

I'm afraid we're going to see more of the Others in Rickon's arc. :/

Just started reading A Game of Thrones again a couple of days ago. I'm finding it interesting how many of the characters I'm now picturing as the cast from the tv series. And just as interesting which characters that I still don't picture as the cast. The Starks, the Lannisters, most of their soldiers and servants are the cast to me now. On the other hand, I can only hear the voice of the actor who plays Illyrio when reading his words, I still picture him much differently. Have to get further into the book before working out who else fits or doesn't IMO.

I'm planning to re-read the others as well, back to back, which is something I rarely do with book series. Normally I alternate between different things to avoid getting burnt out on a particular series, but I don't think that's going to happen with aSoIaF.

I can't picture Sansa's actress as Sansa. Nor is the Renly actor coming up for me.
I still see the former as shorter, more excitable and with a brighter face than her series counterpart. Renly is larger than life. All swagger, all charisma and without most of the 'waaaaaaaaa'.
Also, Bran looks a lot more like a Stark in the series imo. So I still picture him as a younger version of Robb (auburn locks, blue eyes).

I hated the Renly cast. Didn't mind Sansa though.

I absolutely can't make sense of the Jaime and Cersei Lannister casting.

I like Lena Headey and all but NOT as Cersei. Lena is pretty but not nearly enough to play Cersei. And what's the deal with a 5 foot tall Jaime that's barely handsome. Whatever though

Jaime barely handsome?    You have not perused the internet much, have you. lol

P.S. this is a book discussion thread, really- there's a separate thread for the TV show.

How so? Are there Others on Skagos? I guess we might have cannibals  to deal with on Skagos, but Others?

I'll be curious to see where that whole plot turns up. I really liked Davos' stuff in ADwD and the revelation about Bran going to Skagos and Davos going after him was great.

Perused the internet?  I have HBO.  Have you not read the books???   Golden Blonde hair ring a bell?  I pictured tall, very built, Brad Pitt'ish from Troy.  I'm not an expert on dude handsomeness or anything but the books made me think Jaime would immediately strike anyone as very impressive.  Nikolaj Coster-Waldau seems like a regular guy.

P.S.  I compared cast members to the book characters so yes it's actually relevant not only to the thread but also to several of the most recent responses within thread....like the one immediately above mine.

I dunno, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is hot as hot to me and certainly has a lustful following. They decided not to dye his hair- the actor said he preferred not to. There are several characters who aren't perfect matches with their book counterparts. Tywin is supposed to be bald, but I'm not complaining about Charles Dance, either.

Yes I've read the books.

Jon's whole justification for sending Davos (happy sigh ) to Skagos was so that the Others would not transform the wildlings sheltering there into wraiths.

I second this.  The guy has charisma too... It takes aplomb to deliver some of Jamie's more individualistic lines and Nikolaj does a great job. I also like Lena, I think she's plenty good as Cersei...

I finished "A Feast For Crows" last month ( December 2011 ) however I haven't started "A Dance With Dragons" yet. To be honest with you I did not enjoy "A feast For Crows" very much, aside from Jamie Lannister and Arya Stark it felt like most of the book was focused on D-List characters, it more or less killed my enthusiasm for the story. The cast of characters is also getting rather large and it is getting harder to keep track of what is happening where and who is loyal to whom. Anyhow I decided to take a break from the series for now, I'll probably begin reading book 5, " A Dance With Dragons" after Season 2 of Game of Thrones airs on television and if not then then probably during the summer.

Wait...maybe I need to re-read A Dance with Dragons or I've forgotten things, but wasn't it Manderly that let Davos know Rickon was on Skagos? And that it was hinted that Stannis would get support from the Northerners if he had Rickon- the true heir to Winterfell?

I remember Jon sending one of the Night's Watch commanders (Cotter Pyke, just looked it up)up to Hardhome to get the wildling refugees out so they don't get slaughtered and turn into Wights. Unless I missed some subtext that Jon was involved with Davos and Manderly too?

Nope, you're correct. Addai67 definitely got some names and/or events mixed up.

Oh, I did get them mixed up, but in my mind those two story lines will converge in the next one. I guess we'll see.

Sweet!  I haven't watched any of the series yet, because I'd rather watch all of it at one go Image IPB

I hate to wait Image IPB

I have a love/hate relationship with George R. R. Martin's writing, in that I always love reading whatever he has to write, but sometimes I feel that what he's writing is unnecessary detail. I started feeling this way around the time of A Storm of Swords. I felt he was expanding his story too far in scope, which on one hand is great because in every fantasy story there's always that feeling of "what ever happened to....," but with that expansion, it means the central core of the story must lose focus.

Anyway, it was an unpopular opinion for me to hold at the time, but as the series does progress, I think fear that GRRM might croak has some people thinking "get on with it!" Continuing to expand the story is all well and good, but fat lot of good that will do if we're left wondering what Winter was supposed to bring if he's left describing life in Dorne and dies, you know?

Whatever, I'm rambling. I'm only rambling because I bumped the tv thread and said I was going to talk about Theon Greyjoy, but that was a bit of a lie. Actually, that was because I recently responded to a poll about favorite character, in which I was the lone respondant for Theon. I did that because "favorite" character for me is malleable, and it really depends on whichever POV character's chapters I enjoy reading the most at the time. For the first couple of books, that's Tyrion. Then it turns to Jaime by the third book. I found myself oddly interested in Theon's chapters in ADWD, seeing this completely miserable creature and his view of what had become of the North. That was cemented by GRRM's recent release of a Theon chapter for the next book, where I'm just pleasantly surprised to see this miserable creature then discussing strategy with Stannis. Considering how completely unhinged Bolton was in his letter to Jon at the end of ADWD, the upcoming battle is something I really want to see.

Anyway, so yeah. There.

I wish GRRM would have people stay dead who died, both Theon and Catelyn are alive in some manner? Brienne has come back as well possibly and I doubt that he's going to kill off Jon.

Pretty much every chapter in ADWD ended with "and then they--wait for it--" only to have their next chapter start off with "--didn't die." GRRM was praised for killing of Ned Stark in the first novel as evidence that he would hold no character sacred, but pretty much every character has been held sacred ever since.

And that's the problem, if your going to kill em off then keep em dead.  If you don't plan on keeping them dead then it shouldn't be the book's always going to kill somebody off at the end of the book.  The only POV character that's truly dead is Ned Stark, I wouldn't be suprised if he comes back to life the way things are going.

Don't get my wrong, I love GRRM's books, I just think people staying dead would be a better way of going about things.

Theon didn't die, and neither did Brienne.  Jon definitely isn't dead either..

At any rate, resurrection (and necromancy) plays a large part in the magic of George R Martin's World, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Whatever! Martin has permanently killed off plenty of characters.  Major characters!   Eddard Stark comes to mind. Or maybe Robert Baratheon. Or a dozen others.  Image IPB

Really?  Robert Jordan was certainly guilty of unnecessary detail but not George R.R. Martin.  Not even close IMO.  Jordan did die before finishing The Wheel of Time, though.  Honestly if Martin died I'd be more sadden by his death than by never knowing the end of  ASoIaF.
