So are people optimistic about the 2014 release date for WoW? Personally, I'd love it as it's absolute hell right now with so many things up in the air, although if it's not ready I'm not going to throw a hissyfit.

I'll avoid spoilers but post one thing. One special character got me hooked on the book not too long ago."When he opened the door, the light from within threw his shadow clear across the yard, and for just a moment Tyrion Lannister stood tall as a king."

This is a spoiler-open thread, feel free to spill it. We started this thread when A Dance with Dragons came out, so that people could discuss the books and not spoil the TV-only people in the HBO thread.

I'd say 2015 is a safer bet for WoW, but who really knows.

heralded by a "bleeding star" (probably the red comet).

I read a theory that the "bleeding star" was a certain unfortunate knight who had a star on his banner. Coincidence? I think not! (Although it could just be a red wedding herring.)

I never actually considered that. It would be more subtle than "huge comet appears to herald Dany and her dragons. Who could possibly be Azor Ahai?"

I certainly hope Daenerys doesn't turn out to be some messiah figure. After all the destruction she's caused in Essos, she doesn't deserve to be one.

New Tyrion chapter has been read by George R.R. Martin at worldcon.

From what I've read, it seems pretty damn cool. I just hope Victarion binds the dragons to him during the battle.

Has anyone actually read the new novella, The Princess and the Queen? It's not like the other stories the author has written; it's written like it was a historical account (which it is in-universe).

I was quite impressed by it. It also seems to confirm that you don't have to be a Targaryen to ride a dragon.

Is that a spin-off like those Dunk and Egg tales?

It's going to be apart of The World of Ice and Fire book, so not really.

You can read it here.

It deals with The Dance of the Dragons, that civil war that split the Targaryen family in two and in which most of the dragons left in the world died off.

I have it, haven't read it yet.  I always assumed the Targaryens had magic items that allowed them to control the dragons- the horn Victarion is bringing to Daenerys, for example.

They're never at all mentioned.

The Velaryons seem to have been a pretty prominent family in their time. Certainly not by the time of the books.

I disagree. While I'm fine with changes made in the show, it has a sketchy way of handling certain characters. Daenerys is glamorized and is basically a Mary Sue, Stannis isn't as badass as he is in the books and his finer qualities aren't shown often, Littlefinger is so obviously evil and lacks subtlety, and Varys is portrayed as this guy protecting the Realm.

I'm not too far in to the short story, but even for a long-time fan, so far it's mind-numbing. You could fill several pages just with the lists of names of this or that bannerman. GRRM is letting success go to his head.

I can't even keep up with that in the main books. Anyone with Ser in their name that isn't a main character is lost to me. I spend chapters catching up on who people actually are, then it switches at the end and I've another group of Sers and banners to figure out, again. The fact a lot of them have the same surname doesn't help.

I finished AFFC last week and it put me off diving straight into ADWD, bannerman fatigue forced me to go read something else first.

That's interesting. I thought the story was really well-done for what it was, a historical account of a civil war written by a Maester.

The story has some of my most favorite scenes from the series like the Blood and Cheese incident and Aegon II's fight against Baela.

I've come up with a theory, regarding what might happen in the next books.

Spoiler

It's just speculation, but it seems likely to me the way things are shaping together.

Probably the best sample to-date, and it hints at some very good upcoming developments.

A spider in the garden, man. A spider in every garden.

Varys may have bold terms like "order" and "the good of the realm" close to his heart, but good men will die under his watch (or knife) for that "greater good" to avoid the complications he knows (or at least believes he knows) will otherwise arise.

GRRM shies away from most major fantasy tropes, but order v. chaos is written all over that one.

I love the show but the books are superior. Season 4 is prob gonna be the best yet, really looking forward to the purple wedding and Lady Stoneheart.

Highlight of the show will be Stannis charging and kicking wilding ass.

Well, anything with Stannis the f*cking Mannis is gonna be a highlight anyway.
