Dumbing down.

For example, compare the combat trailer for Mass Effect 3 (Explosions, rock music, not really any dialogue, all action, no real interaction) to the Mass Effect 2 Launch Trailer (Epic space opera, endurance, determination, courage, love, romance).
Maybe it's just me but if these trailers are saying anything I think we've got Gears of War Commander Shepard edition.

Mass Effect 2's launch trailer wasn't created 9 months prior to release.

ME1 -> ME2 -> ME3 - Yeah its getting dumbed down, because kids doesn't wan't any learning anymore instead they just cry "it's to hard, nerf" and yes, developers listen because kids are the majority of gamers.
It's to much cuddling that began in the 90'ties.
Ahh the good old days of nintendo hard, when you actually had to try and felt an actual satisfaction when you succeeded.
Yes I'm pessimistic because there is a chance I might get pleasantly surprised.

As a fifteen year old I completely agree - the majority of kids who discuss games will always be discussing the simple ones - and it's sad because games as a whole have became a whole lot easier.
For example, GTA 2 compared to GTA 4.
It's sad that people can't stand a challenge and it's sad that I fall in with the generation of... well... idiots; I really don't like saying that but it's true, people seemingly only want to see things explode and fire a gun.

Can we please stop with this whole "dumbing down" baloney? It's the most ridiculous excuse for criticism I have ever seen. It is all insult and no substance, intended to show vapid superiority by labeling someone else as stupid, as if somehow people are dumb if they like to play shooters.
I never insulted anyone nor did I intend to, simply put the features are being simplified for a wider audience. If people were dumb for playing shooters... well... what game series are we discussing?
No, im not opposed to a game being 'simple', im opposed to a game being stripped of complexity in an attempt to gain more sales and failing.

ME1 was a lot easier than ME2....
Also, people consider a lot of older games to be "harder" because they were frustrating in terms of interface, balance, and pointless complexity. Games now are certainly shorter and made to be beaten, but that doesn't necessarily make them "easier." Looking for a magic button for hours due to respawning enemies, clumsy map function, and poorly designed UI is not hard, it's annoying.
I'm sick of these "dumbing down" threads. What does that even mean? Making a better interface? Improved combat mechanics and controls? All I care about is that the damn game is fun and well designed.

The launch trailer for ME2 was created 7 days before the game was out...ME2's E3 trailer was nothing but action and crappy rock music just like ME3's E3 trailer... E3 always leaves a bad taste in people's mouth. Its just the way things are. Wait till we see the launch trailer for ME3, it will probably go for the same aesthetic that ME2's did.

With the recent direction of Bioware I am worried, let's take a look.
SWTOR - Apparently it works alot like WoW, it's another WoW clone seemingly.
Dragon Age 2 - Nuff' said.
Mass Effect 2 - Quite a bit of dumbing down there.

Same thing with Dragon Age, I still enjoy playing origins, planning a character, (or using a modded character for fun). The more I heard about DA2, the more worried I became, nevermind how fast it came out after origins, but the lack of choosing other races, a lot less skills, really, the same direction as ME2 took. I was quite disappointed with DA2, it looked nicer, but that's about it, if I wanted button mashing I'd play a hack and slash game, not to mention the feel of many corners being cut to rush it out. (Anyone else completely sick of the same dam dungeon/cave for 90% of the game?)
Overall games seem to be getting dumbed down to appeal to a broader market, I can understand that, but I find myself missing the old days when you actually had to think to finish a game, games that left you stuck trying to figure things out by yourself, there was a much greater sense of accomplishment when finishing those games. These days, I'm lucky to not get sick of a game before I'm finished it, there's really no challenge to most games, and way too much hand holding.

Then why didn't you write "over-simplified to appeal to a wider audience" instead of "dumbing down"? Or "why the lack of complexity in the trailer"?

The decimation of complexity is what has made video games easier, not balancing, not better interfaces.
If you didn't manage your weapons/mods/skills/armour in ME1 then you'd be chewed up and fired into the sun.
ME2 might as well have just been a shooter.

One day I want to see a company show off their epic new action RPG. One that has impressive next-gen graphics that border on painstakingly beautiful, voice acting for thousands of lines of dialogue for even the most minor of NPCs, a branching plot line that accounts for virtually every decision and indecision the player makes, fluid, visceral combat that redefines action . . . and they start their trailer with a menu screen.
It's a customization screen for the local horse-seller; mostly text, as the invisible user scrolls through boring UI menu options detailing which style of horseshoe they want on their new mare. CUT TO BLACK-
TEXT - "In an age long past . . ."
CUT TO - A diablo-esque grid based gear menu. Someone is sorting their loot. They hold their mouse pointer over two daggers that have the same appearance but slightly different stats. They go back and forth trying to decide which one they want for their build . . . CUT TO BLACK
TEXT - "A hero will rise . . . "
CUT TO - A Blacksmith's list of wares. The user scrolls over the sell tab. Sells off a few pieces of armor, all the same type. Obvious vendor trash. Just as they're about to hit the "exit" button we CUT TO BLACK
TEXT - "A journey will commence . . . "
CUT TO - Back to the inventory grid. The mouse pointer picks up one of the daggers. Drags it to the trash icon, but doesn't let go yet. The dagger floats there for a few seconds. The player's pensive. Should they throw the dagger away? They hold there . . . and then put it back in their inventory and mouse over the other dagger to read the stats again. CUT TO BLACK
TEXT - "An Empire Will Crumble . . . ."
CUT TO - A book of in game lore. The font makes it difficult to read as it's in some kind of calligraphy. The shot holds on the page for about twenty seconds, enough for us to read a couple of paragraphs but not enough to finish the entire page. The player was just finishing up that page you see. The book's page flips and we see two full pages of further text, and we hold for ten more seconds while very faint music is heard in the background. The kind of idle, generic, tavern you hear in any RPG inn. After ten seconds, long enough to begin reading this massive wall of text for which we have no frame of reference, and obviously in the middle of probably twelve pages, we again CUT TO BLACK
TEXT - "An Evil Will Awake . . ."
CUT TO - An obvious loading screen. A fairy's wings flap in the lower right corner to let you know the game hasn't crashed. They animate in that stuttering way all loading screen icons animate. A tootip fads in the on the center of the screen. It reads "Did you know that there are 46 variations to your main combat style? Each with 3 different specialization paths? Choose wisely! A Jack of All Trades is a Master of . . . Gnome!" CUT TO BLACK.
TEXT - ". . . and Only You Can Save The World!"
CUT TO - the armor grid again. The mouse goes back and forth between the two daggers quickly. It stops over the one it didn't try to throw away earlier for a couple of seconds . . . but then throws away the one it almost did earlier. CUT TO BLACK.
TEXT - "The Elfwar Chronicles VII - The Obsidian Blades" FADE DOWN
FADE UP - TEXT - Coming Soon.
