If we are talking about who we'd like better as a person, then Ashley. She may be hard sometimes but she is essentially a good person doing what she thinks is right, plus I love tough warrior women, whereas Morrigan is downright nasty and more importantly a hypocrite (to me) with big boobs. Let's be honest, most of the Morrigan love is love of the boobs! :P

I am quite surprised at all the 'don't like all the religious talk' people are giving, I recall like one line and that was it, I suppose some people read more into things than others.

Anyway, I'm also surprised at how well liked Tali was, I kinda figured it was just me, relieved that I'm not the only one. :D Quite impressive, considering that we don't even know what her race looks like let alone Tali herself that her personaility still gets such a response, though maybe it's the mystery that draws people to her?

Ashley is annoying as hell. She's probably the worst written character of mass effect, as her "though girl" attitude was broght to irrealistic and almost comedic extremes, to the point of being simply unberable when she starts to rave and rant and be unnecessarily aggressive in most occasions. So yeah, Morrigan simply obliterates her in every field of comparison.

It's to be noted that normally "though warrior girls" (or the equivalent "tsundere" japanese archetype) are my very favourite kind of female characters. Managing to create a character that fits that definition, and that I can't stomach is quite a deed of bad writing. I felt relieved to hear that she probably won't have any big part in ME2

Every single character in Dragon Age is better written than those in Mass effect  anyway, so yeah, it's a general trend.
While Mass Effect is a good game, it's characters (besides Tali and Wrex) are rather weak compared to the usual Bioware standards.

It's mostly the fact that she's actually well written and not entirely stereotypical, as opposed to most other characters of ME.

Definetively Morrigan, i liked her the best of all characters/possible romances of DAO/ME or even former games, she's leading by far

I'll make a stand and say that I am, indeed, religious. I'm Christian. I believe, and all that. Obviously, Ashley's faith didn't turn me off, and if I remember right, there WAS just the single mention of it. And here I thought it was religious people who were hypersensitive, but apparently, it's everyone else.

Overall, I'd like Ashley more as a person, if I ever met her in real life. Morrigan, I'd have a hard time staying around to get to know, as her cynicism is just a bit much on the uncomfortable side, for me. Still, I like that there were enough hints and conversation points in both games to give the sense that there was more of a person and past behind them, then what the main character saw.

Ashley's military personnel during a time when humanity is still new to the galactic civilization scene, and had themselves introduced to the rest of the races by (in humanity's point of view) a totally unprovoked war. "Cautious" and "humanity first and foremost" are how I saw her point of view as being, towards extra terrestrials.

Morrigan was raised by a woman who uses and sucks men dry for her own purposes, values power above all else and made this plainly clear to her daughter, and expected her to do the same. "No little girl wants to hear that" as Morrigan herself pointed out, at one time. She had, for all intents and purposes, an abusive childhood. While I don't like some of how she turned out, there's glimpses into her, that shows that she's not ALL about power, and that discovering that she's not, herself, frightens her. She's easy for me to sympathize with, after getting to know her.

..I guess, to answer the question posed, I'd say I'd take either one...

..but I'd choose Liara or Leliana, given a broader choice.

Ashley vs. Morrigan:

They both have issues, but Morrigan's seem more of a product of being raised by Flemmeth. Ashley's past isn't very interesting. I would choose Morrigan, she's far more complex to me and comes across as smarter. Her quick wit is refreshing and only adds to the fun of the dialogue, she has personality and getting on her good side takes effort. Ashley is predictable and...well she floats between quoting poetry and coming across as a ditzy space thug. I like women to be smart, Morrigan wins hands down for me.

For all time Bioware games I've played, I'd have to rank possible female NPC romances about like this:

1.) Jaheira - I like complex and bizarre relationships, she was fascinating to figure out.

2.) Leliana - She really suprised me in good ways, had far more depth than the first impression.

3.) Morrigan - She almost ties Leliana, very cool in different ways.

4.) Bastilla - Snooty, know-it-all princess complex but very loveable.

5.) Viconia - I like to be insulted by women, especially when they are blue and potentially violent.

6.) Aerie - Very bizarre, morbid past, but a cute and interesting character too, a good reason to pick a fight with Haer'Dalis. She would tie with Viconia, but I don't allow ties.

7.) Liara - I liked Liara, but she was a little bland, and I didn't like her painted on fake eyebrows which I guess Bioware tossed in to make her look "more human" and therefore romancible. They could of gotten the same effect with her dotted skin patter though and it would of looked much better.

8.) Ashley - As stated before, she could be cool, but seemed inconsistant vascillating between quoting poetry and being a ditzy space thug.

9.) Aribeth - She only ranks as high as ninth place because she's the last character I can think of. She's the worst character to me...ever! Generic fantasy setting sex symbol with rediculous armor, boring as dirt to talk to with my characters, completely air headed motives. Paladin Barbie fails. I cannot express in words how uninspiring this character was for me and how often I just tried to skip over her dialogue after reading it the first time.

Love how everyone is trying to decide which grouping of pixels they would bed. I for one say put the game down for a bit, go find a actual person (aka Non Pixel), and see what happens..cuz i hate to think what some of the fan boys here are doing at night in their moms basements to a crudely animated simulacra of a woman.

Pot. Kettle. Black.

Edit: I still vote for Viconia.

And here comes the condescending troll post from the self elected internet though guy that, since he doesn't have a real life, has to go to a forum to try and convince others and himself that he does. Yeah, I guess we can't critique movies on a film forum either or characters on a writing forum due to your reasoning because it's not "real" life? Give me a break. Why are you even on these forums, particularly this thread?

I connected with Morrigan more. I saw into her soul and made love to it.

Ashley was cool too but as I tend to say I didn't really care for any of the characters in ME. I don't see Ashley's distrust of aliens or her faith to be negatives at all. They were the only two aspects that made her seem more human to me and not just the chick that sits in the hangar polishing her gun all the time. Plus, I agree with her that at the end of the day each species is doing what is best for them, as they should be. I know it makes people mad and they call her a xenophobe and racist but I think the whole Star Trek notion of alien United Nations in the purest sense to be a load of b.s.

Both girls were constantly benched in my games, but I'd pick Ashley only because when she's parked on the ship, at least she's cleaning rifles. Morrigan just gives out the stink eye.

Some people have commented on the tomboy thing with Ashley. I like independent strong women. Ashley's tomboyishness didn't make me not like her. Her voice acting or looks didn't make me not like her. Her character made me not like her. I disliked Ashley because of certain things she did and said. I disliked her as a person. My dislike for her had nothing to do with religious beliefs. She just bothered me me. Having said that, I absolutely could not stand Liara. Tali's character was the more mysterious character and I felt the character actually had more to it and wished they had developed it more in the original ME. It didn't hurt that I liked the Liz Sroka's voice acting and we don't even know what the character looks like. I found that character to be the most attractive when viewing everything offered by the game.

Lastly, out of the DA:O characters I liked Leliana the best. She was cute, she's a redhead, I liked her voice and accent, but most importantly I liked the character. She had a backstory. She has a softness and innocence but she also has a strength. She's a "good girl" with naughtiness thrown in or a "naughty girl" with some goodness thrown in depending how you view her. She's no girly girl unable to handle herself just because she may not be as abrasive as Morrigan. I found her character more well-rounded. Morrigan's character is also physically attractive and I like Claudia Black but yet the backstory is limited and much is left to be learned. The character is incomplete.

Getting back on point, while Morrigan's character may not yet be fully explained or complete I prefer her character as a whole over Ashley.

Leliana stole my eyes and heart from the get go.Yes,I'm an unabashed sucker for red-heads.If she had Liara's freckles she would have been perfect.

Morrigan Just....just...she made my skin crawl.

Liara has beautiful freckles.Um....um...*scratches head* What can I say.Liara's romance plot was a tragic bore to me.Too bad I couldn't space her.

Ashley I got into and could understand.Totally dug her character.

Bastilla No chemistry at all there...skipped it.

Jaheira felt too much like family and was pretty much off limits.Besides...I enjoyed Khalied way to much to start...

Aerie and Viconia were clerics, thus never made it into any of my play time.Ran a Human fighter7/cleric 2x,didn't see the need for other clerics in the group.

Gosh,I think I need to play Jade Empire again, couple times maybe...I don't remember any of the romances from there...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Havent played thru any of the male romaces in dragon age yet...
(Yes,I normally try to see both sides of the romance pool,BW does some of the best storytelling in them)
Carth was bearable,Kind of a down to earth guy.

Kaiden was a little better than Liara...but only a bit.(I don't want to space him)

Anoem wan an anomally for me.The only BG2 romance I finished, and hes pretty much the same build all of my characters were.

Honorable mention to Nalia de'Arnise . Her and my pc were nigh inseperable.

The one Bioware character I wish was romanceable?Annah from Planescape torment.Red head with a sharp wit.Tottally adored Annah.

Ok...I have rambled too much.
G'night.

DOH! Forgot to mention Tali...knew I was forgetting Tali.Everything about her, from her look, her mystery, her voice, Ahh sweet perfection in a tight package.

No you dont get it..please critique movies or film or characters even in a game..I came to this particular thread because i thought that was what most people were going to do..looking back though i find its sad how many people are not on that level..how many people are not saying 'Wow morgana's dialog options are great' or 'wow the voice actor did a great job with such and such' Rather there saying, 'wow..hehe...shes hot' *face palm*

As for my mom.. shes all yours..55 years old and lives in Alaska and single no less..

hehe..actually the best response i would say. And although im not trolling for some hot pixel i will say 'Touché sir'

I liked both Ashley *and* Morrigan... but I think I'd have to go with Morrigan. She's far more sultry, she doesn't expect you to care for her feelings 24/7 and her sociopathic nature towrds others is a refreshing change from the norm.

Just don't disagree with her >_>

Wow I'm surprised not many liked Ashley, shes one of my favorite female characters in videogames. I was just disappointed soldiers were not very useful in ME. I guess I'm just a sucker for Tennyson. :P

I normally like "though girls" a lot. But ashley is overexaggerated, to the point of comedy. Most of her speeches and reactions are borderline psychopathic, and the attempts to give her a "soft side" only manage to make her suddenly flip into being overly whiny.

A full example on how bad writing can turn a potentially great character in a trainwreck.
There are ways to write an assertive and even fiery female characters without turning her into a rabid dog costantly barking in your face. But alas, that's exactly the difference bwteen good character design, and a bad one.

Morrigan.

Ashley annoyed me to no end. Only romanced her to get the achievement, since she was surprisingly less annoying than the other choices.
