I wouldn't say that is the case now. With only a cameo appearance in ME2 and with many people having been introduced to Mass Effect on the PS3, where ME2 was the first game, Wrex has more or less been forgotten about. In fact this is probably the first thread I've seen requesting that he be a permanent squaddie in ME3.

I guess you are new around here, but you have a point with many new gamers not having played ME1.

Not at all.
This is the 3rd account I've had here. The last one (Aedan_Cousland) had the password changed, right when I changed email providers. So I've got no way to access that account.
Anyway, I've been on the forums since before ME1 was released.

You even get to dress in red overalls, don a cheesey moustache, and speak with an italian accent for the entire ceremony.

Wrex is my favorite character in the whole damn series and as much as I liked Grunt in ME2 he couldn't come close to filling Wrex's shoes.

That's a shame about your account.
But I was able to find a number of threads requesting Wrex, both from the in-site search and google.

Garrus was probably my favorite squadmate in ME1, but Wrex was a close 2nd. Those two had some hilarious elevator convos by the way.

Wrex is dead in over 50% of the saves.

I doubt that figure.
I'd say he survived in the vast majority of games that were imported from ME1 and in the PS3 version you can just straight up choose whether he lives or not.
Although why Bioware decided to have him dead by default for anyone who started fresh in ME2 is beyond me.

Silly thought, Wrex is like Bruce Campbell, he would overshadow too much of the game!

I still wonder why we got a rather dull and boring Grunt instead of Wrex in ME2. C'mon BW, give us a proper Krogan, give us Wrex!

I liked Grunt when judged only by his own merits; but when compared to Wrex he was a weak character.
Grunt is basically just a Krogan which as a fan of the species I find entertaining unto itself; but Wrex was a Krogan who challenged your preconceptions about what makes a Krogan.
Grunt had the Krogan badassery and love of battle going for him in the
same way that Wrex did; but Wrex also had a jaded cynicism and dry wit
as well as a conflicting sense of loyalty and fatalism in regards to his
own race which made him both charming and deep in a way that Grunt
couldn't be.
Grunt is nieve to the extreme while Wrex has hundreds of years of experience at his disposal which makes you look past the fact that he's a hulking battle hungry space lizard and discover that he's actually one of the wisest characters you meet in the game who despite being a jaded mercenary still wants to believe that there's a hope for his people.

ashley and i shot him dead
I have this sly suspicion that even that might not have been enough to kill him.
As Zaeed said "Rage is one hell of an anesthetic" and if Zaeed can survive being shot in the head, I certainly wouldn't put it past Wrex.
It would be pretty interesting to have players who shot him in ME1 find themselves face to face with a pissed off reptilian weapon of mass destruction in ME3.

That is if he survived being vaporized. Don't tell me he was able to get away from that explosion in time, seriously that explosion took a good chunk of that planet, pretty sure we ruined virmire that day.

Even though I like Grunt I would have much preferred if Okeer didn't die.

What's her name that Asari scientist managed to pull it off (provided you didn't kill her) as did Kirahe and his men (provided you gave them enough help to keep from getting slaughtered) and they were both closer to the heart of the explosion then Wrex would have been.
So if a hapless Asari scientist can pull it off, I think the most badass Krogan in the galaxy could do it even with a gunshot to the head.

Kirrahe and his men were on the Normandy when it escaped.

Incorrect Sir.
Kirrahe and his men ran out of the blast radius on foot and were then picked up by the Normandy.
If you don't believe me I invite you to replay the mission. Kirrahe says that he and his men will "attempt to escape the blast radius on foot" when he outlines their battleplans and they are in the process of doing so while Shepard is duking it out with Saren.
They are not in the vicinity of the Normandy when Shepard carries the Virmire Survivor's worthless butt on board. They do show up on the Normandy without a scene showing them being retrieved; but if you talk to Kirrahe he will tell you that they managed to get out of range on foot.
Aside from that the Asari still pulled it off and she sure as hell wasn't on the Normandy.
