To be GOTY Bioware would have to put everything into graphics and make the story 4 hours long.

GOTY means NOTHING.

Lol, man you made me spit coffee on my monitor. But you sure do have a valid point. You know I have to chime in here. I feel it should be GOTY as well. Once you factor in the toolset. Name me any game that can beat it? Especially now that Im understanding the toolset even better than I did the Aurora Toolset. I cant beleive the power we have available to us.

This game has some bonafide legs to run on and the modders are going to show us all something special in the coming months.  Good time to be a Bioware fan.  Dragon Age has definatley made this gamer very very happy.

MW2 is actually a worse game than CoD4 (no dedicated servers WTF?).

Borderlands has similarly appalling multiplayer (gamespy WTF?).

The review sites that pander to the lowest common denominator (in other words, all "mainstream" reviewers) will undoubtedly ignore those massive flaws and complete lack of substance in favour of the "OMG SHOOT STUFF" factor, of course.

I actually enjoyed many hours of Borderlands and still do. Quite a unique game. My only pet peeve with it is false advertising. Instead of "FPS and RPG made a baby!" it should have been "FPS and Diablo made a baby!"

Like I said, decent, not GOTY material, lol, DA is ina different league then borderlands.

Maybe I should try and replay it... I must have missed out on a lot because it seemed to me like it was FPSRPG w/ Diablo 2 mechanics.  I guess I might be misreading this post though as I hope you don't think Borderlands is a better RPG than DA:O.

I guess explosions > story for the new age of gamers.

The Game Of The Year is like the Toyota Camry. DAO is more like the Lotus Elise. It's never going to win a popularity contest. Hopefully it doesn't have to.

I'm a HUGE fan of jazz and so my perspective on things like this is influenced by my experience as a jazz fan.

You see, jazz is the music that makes me feel alive. The colors, moods, textures of sound that transport me to the heights of beauty...mmm...

.But you see jazz is not popular. It will rarely win Grammy awards, jazz stations (both radio and TV) are closing down. It doesn't get much "Respect" as the OP defines it. But does it lessen my passion for jazz? No way !!!

I mean jazz fans are rare, rpg fans are rare. Jazz fans who are also rpg fans are almost nonexistent.  I'm the only one I know.
Party of one !!!:wizard:

GOTY doesn't really mean much.

Actually most gaming sites' POV, review etc etc are biased and 'money driven'. Just...well let me list some example:

Gamespy listed Age of conan as a holiday (Christmas) gift choice.../facepalm (I don't think I ever visit that site after that lol)

Gamespot: Kayne & lynch incident

Ubisoft...YO gimme my game good grade or...or ELSE!

DA:O is a top tier game for sure and the PLAYERS enjoy & acknowledge it, that's the most important.

this game is BY FAR the best game to come out since fallout 3-

however, if fight night 4 had 1st person split screen vs. views for co-op, then that would win.

most of that games coolness is destroyed by lack of first person view and ability to turn off the health/stamina bars.

oh that and the candy ass "miami bass" crap they put in there- with few songs that don't make me want to take a big saw to the landscape and just set florida adrift in the ocean.

I guess there must be some people, somewhere, who'd base a buying decision on something being the GOTY. Not sure what real purpose it would have, though.

There's a reason why it's called GOTY....Cause it's a good game...

DAO is just kinda a game who has more story then action...if you're a pot smoking hippy with a simple prefference, I'm sure DAO is a candidate in your eyes...Sorry to burst your love bubble but DAO sucks in comparison to many other games...

Guess what though...your kind don't exist in the people who decide, which is good...

DAO is not a candidate for GOTY, and for a good reason, it is simply too much of an unfinished piece of crap that had potential but got f'd up by Bioware lazing around with it."Awww it's too early to go through the stress of releasing it...let's give them the delayed-for-tweaks-and-upgrades excuse for another 3 months". Obviously Bioware bribed across the board to get decent reviews.

If you don't like that then go f urself ^_^

I am just curious what would you say is a GOTY material at the moment?

If those people didn't exist then I wouldn't be seeing "Game of the Year" edition for games 1 or more years old, still on the shelf at Best Buy, Walmart.

Aren't GOTY editions pretty good deals for people who hadn't bought the game before though?

At least I think that they usually come packaged with DLC and priced at a good 20-30 dollars.

If the game was that good to begin with, why didn't they own it before the GOTY edition arrived?

Obviously I realize some people just can't afford the game until later because of financial reasons. But I'm just saying, GOTY has some influence on the marketing of video games ..even though on principal, I agree that it's a farce.

You may notice that more than one game a year releases a "GOTY" edition.

I guess it just sounds fancier than calling it a "bundle."

This game will never be GOTY because of rabid MW2 fanboys and the like have a 3 second attention span.. I mean, I like a shooter as much as the next guy but MW2 has a 2 hour campaign and multiplayer almost identical to MW1. none of that matters though, it is a shoe-in for GOTY much like Titanic was shoe-in for so many awards despite being a trite piece of crap.

Sure, a two hour campaign but holy jesus christ WHAT a two hour campaign. That thing was a journey. Honestly as soon as I finished it (on veteran), I wanted to go right back in.

Dragon Age is awesome but I don't think we should compare shooters and RPGs.

The reason why DA:O is not a candidate for GOTY is that the rest of the industry would have to produce a game at the level of Bioware which would cripple them. The term RPG is being diluted by entitling game like Borderland as an RPG. What is role playing about that?

It's true. If a game with a 60+ hour campaign were to set the bar, I think a lot of devs would go belly up.
