During play I keep getting this error:

Rendering thread exception:
General protection fault!

History: GZLibFile:: ~GZLibFile() Address = 0x1159ee15 (filename not found) [in C:\\Games\\Mass Effect\\Binaries\\MassEffect.exe]
GMatrix2D::EncloseTransform() Address = 0x115404aa (filename not found) [in C:\\Games|Binaries\\Masseffect.exe]

Only each time, the address changes.

Having the same problem. It occurs somewhat at random.

1. Mass Effect 1 PC Steam version with Bringing down the sky dlc

2. System specs
a. Intel Core2 Duo E8400 @ 3ghz / 4gb Ram

b. Ati Radeon HD 4850 / 512mb ram / Catalyst V 2011.0126.1749.31909

c. Onboard Realtek ALC883 / Windows 7 native

d. Win7 sp1

e. DirectX 11

3. Problem Details

b. What? Game occasionally crashes with the error describe by Rolenka

c. When? After a couple of hours play time, though not consistently. I believe both times were during conversation.

d. Where? So far it has happened two times - last time during Normandy talk with Wrex, cannot recall the fist.

e. Why? Looks like a problem with GZLib not being able to find a certain address... Perhaps during some unpacking of audio files.. Although the error mentions a protection error, so it might be DRM related.

Other notes:
I did not have the problem during my last play through, which might be a year or two ago (when was it ME2 was released). That was a retail DVD install.

Click Start, then type Reliability in the search, then click on Reliability monitor. This should bring up a program that logs what crashed on your system. It may give a better idea of what actually had the issue, or it may just say ME1 was bad. It would help to know more exactly what section of your computer had the issue with ME1, because GPF can be caused by just about anything.

Refer to the "How to Report" guide, and don't dig out dead threads over six months since they were last active.

This. Without system info, it's hard to help. Only thing I can suggest without getting any specifics about your system is that if you have a Nvidia card, you can try using Beta Drivers. This is what had worked for me years ago, I think I was using a 169 build of a beta driver or something.

On the other hand, newer drivers allow me to play ME1 anyway, even though it still drops video output occasionally. Demiurge didn't do the greatest job porting ME over to PC.
