Hello all.

I did a solo fighter/druid solo run (not no-reload, which is why I am posting here) some time ago. He got "stuck" engaging the 2nd batch of fire giants in Yaga-Shura's Temple. However, thanks to a recent no-reload run, I realized I wasn't playing him the best I could. So after making some changes I gave it a shot and succeeded first try! Some notes about my installation first:

Vanilla Throne of Bhaal Expansion
Official ToB patch
No mods
PC version (English)

Some changes I made in both tactics and spell selections:
* Was under-utilizing armor of faith. My character is already at the level cap (level 22 druid I believe), so would get 25% resistance bonus! With all the adds in ToB this is quite significant.
* Did NOT know that greater elemental summoning can be used at the SAME TIME (glad I got the HLA though I didn't see it's use at the time) as a Deva! Combined with 3 fire elementals, I can make a potent distraction force.
* Insect plague should always be used if available as this can fear enemies leaving less to deal with at once. This in fact is what happened in the battle fearing one of the giants.
* Keep iron skins up, use HLA like greater whirlwind while protected.

After doing these changes, succeeded first try. Must have tried 1/2 a dozen times before when I was getting stopped here.

Will post more as the run continues.

Whenever their are many enemies grouped together near you, cast Nature's Beauty.

Also, I remember being pleasantly surprised by the HLA Earth Elemental Form on a Fighter/Druid. It gets an undocumented +1 attack per round and it's strength stacks with some of the bonuses it is possible to get during the end of SoA, so you can end up with something like 23 or 24 strength. With the best gauntlets and an off-hand weapon you get to 4.5 attacks per round (5.5 with Belm in the off-hand) base doing 2D10 + large strength bonus damage. Add in an Improved Haste and you don't even really need Greater Whirlwind anymore.

Do not try to improve your attacks above 5 with anything but Improved Haste (or Whirlwind). If you succeed, you won't be happy.

Well Crezzat managed to get the force field down so he can go up the stairs. Two giants here, he used the Greater Elemental Summoning to deal with them, though he helped too with his melee of course.

Btw, the fire traps are harmless to Crezzat because he has the helm of brilliance (fire resistance) and the fire ring. That, plus his innate fire resistance from the Hell Trials of the Tears puts him at 120 fire resistance.

Lot of enemies next room. Crezzat used insect plague and Prismatic spray (helm ability) and also used harm touch. His trusty summons of course assisted. Didn't bother clearing whole room though because I am the level cap. Just needed Yaga's heart, which you can see below I managed to get.

Went to next room, Ithix was there plus a few greater fire elementals. I had 3 fire elementals a fire elemental prince and a Deva. We took them pretty easily and was rewarded with Nylees heart.

So I am done with Yaga's temple. Going to go back to Saradush and get all the non-arcane scrolls, as they could come in handy. Will lose access to them once I battle Yaga-Shura.

Crezzat the fighter/druid solo adventure continues: Nylee, Yaga-Shura and 2nd Pocket Plane Challenge

In preparation to fight Nylee, put up buffs to protect against mages (chaotic commands, protection from lightning, etc.) then summoned 3 fire elementals and a Deva. I did NOT summon a Elemental Prince yet. We took down the undead at the top of the stairs, THEN I summoned the elemental prince. Also, since the Shambling Mounds use blunt damage (I think) I put on the Gromnir helm that gives 50% protection from blunt damage.

I started the battle and concentrated on the Shambling Mounds. The end result was bloody, with most of my summons and of course all of Nylees friends dead, but we were successful without too much trouble.

Next up was Yaga-Shura. I made the mistake of putting too many buffs up. Yaga-shura's men found me and started the battle before I was ready. Quickly got my 5 summons up, but my summons were picked off and eventually the whole army was pounding on Crezzat. A mage spell got a hold on me and it was over.

Tried again and got FOUR summons (3 fire elementals and a Deva), Iron skin and charged forward. When we found Yaga told everyone to charge him. He ran back and then disappeared. I was alone for a moment with enemies charging me so NOW I cast the Elemental Prince spell (he only lasts 10 rounds). In a incredible stroke of luck Yaga came back RIGHT next to the elemental prince. Needless to say told all my summons to charge Yaga (including myself) and he fell in like 3 rounds. Success!

Next up the 2nd Challenge. Did 2 fire elementals, one Wind Nymph (thought her spells might be useful since my enemies will be humanoid), Deva and elemental prince. When the battle started I charged to the back lines and fired off a plague of insects. This worked beautifully as it took out their mage! Their mage was engaging in MELEE (against the Deva) the entire fight! The enemy Crezzat was formidable, ran away from him a few times. The elemental prince was either killed or de-spawned and summoned another. With the new elemental prince's help, together we took down the enemy Crezzat. The mage was still alive thanks to his protections, but not being able to cast any spells pretty much sealed his doom.

Next up is the Oasis ambush. I am not sure how I am going to deal with this. I will arrive unbuffed and at most will be able to cast 1-2 spells before they will be on top of me. Will have to give this some thought.

Crezzat fighting Oasis and Draconis battles:

I was worried about how going to do the Oasis battle, but won it first try. I paused immediately the moment I had control and cast a Deva. I then backed away a little and then cast 2 more fire elementals, then insect plague, more summons (including replacing ones that got killed) and a storm of vengeance. You can see the battle at that point here:

So then Crezzat and his summons continued the fight, again replacing summons as they died, plus insect plague when the opportunity arised. The outlook was looking good:

Crezzat took very little damage, was a bit surprised by that. And Victory!

Draconis Battle:
This was EXTREMELY difficult for me. Lost track of reloads at least 10.  I tried everything I could think of: earthquakes, storms of vengeance, melee, ranged, summons etc. But his breath attack did huge damge to me even with a protection from acid scroll active. had to use rod of resurrection heals just to stay alive. Killing his human form is very easy, since his weapon can't hurt me (and nor can his efreeti or invisible stalkers!).
Posted Image

But his dragon form was just killing me. He always would wing buffet me just as I wasy trying to do a whirlwind with melee. I sometimes could be "out of sight" behind the columns in his area, BUT had no way to damage him. Area effects weren't working due his magic resistance, and if I showed myself to sling him he would put the beat down on me quickly.

After many attempts I got near the door to Abazigal's lair and the dragon moved into the door (guess he thought he could hit me via the wall, but of course he couldn't). He had trouble hitting me his own stalkers were in the way if he tried to hit me from the front! And he just stayed there! This gave me an idea. I decided to cast my 4 fire elementals AWAY from the door, they started to whittle down the stalkers. I put up a storm giant potion (24 STR) and haste potion and killed the stalkers. I put the fire elementals in front of the door which got Draconis atttention. He went invisible so had to do true seeing. He came after my group, I ran away while the elementals engaged Draconis. Now that Dracoins FiNALLY doesn't have his attention on me, I did 2x Greater Whirlwind using my +3 sling with +4 bullets, then 1x whirlwind. He was STILL alive, but still had an elemental keeping him busy and then 2 more hits and FINALLY Success!

Playing on Core Rules by the way, forgot to mention that. Here's hoping Melissan doesn't take 10 reloads (though if this is any indication, it problably will).

Crezzat tries to break into Abazigal's Lair - and is stopped cold This run over.

I'm shocked to say it, but apparently this solo run is over. I am stopped cold by a Greater Wyvern of all things. In particular, I am completely unable to get past it's rather massive regen. I've tried devas, elemental princes, fire elementals, implosion, storm of vengeance, greater whirlwinds x3 + 1x whirlwind. Once I got him to "injured" but then like 2 rounds later it said "barely injured" and then "uninjured". I just can't do enough damage to it.

So will join the BG 1 no-reload thread and start my fighter dualed to mage. Thanks all who were watching my run.

I think you may have hit the infamous regeneration bug. If you repeatedly enter an area where there are regenerating creatures (can be from Pocket Plane or just normally via the door), the regeneration can sometimes be applied multiple times and thus stack... yielding an essentially unkillable creature.

Instant death effects can sometimes be used to overcome this (if you have such items/spells). A lucky vorpal hit from the Deva should be enough.

(There is another regen bug, but that usually only happens with scripted enemies. In those cases nothing will help, not even Ctrl+Y.)

EDIT: So, try Debug Mode=1 in baldur.ini and Ctrl+Y while hovering your cursor over the monster. If that works, you probably just need to let the Deva get enough swings to have the monster fail its save vs. the Deva's vorpal weapon. If it doesn't work... you probably need to go back to a save before you entered the area.

Thanks for your tips Hero, but I think I am ready to move on to my no-reload run. I was doing this run to see if a fighter/druid could beat the game realistically, but the massive # of reloads on Draconis showed me that I needed luck to be successful. I suspect my fighter/druid just doesnt have what it takes, think I may have taken wrong HLA choices, missing some equipment from SoA that I sold that I now realized I needed (such as the armor that gives acid resistance). I don't want to spend a dozen reloads on all the hard fights, so will do my no-reload instead.

Thanks again for your advice, however.

Fair enough :).
