Hey everyone.  I'm playing through DA2 for the second time, and have one quest left before the Deep Roads.  Its the one where you are looking for the missing wife, of this guy in Hightown.  I have a small problem though.  I completely forgot about the 50 gold coins, I need to pay to get on the expedition.  I have 21 gold, and have been buying poisons, bombs and potions along with good equipment.  What I need to know is; As it is unlikely I will get the required 29 gold from this last quest, what is going to happen?  I am almost 20 hrs in, and dont want to have to start again.  Help!  (I have nothing much to sell in my inventory)

You can borrow the money from a dwarf in low town at night. I believe he is near the entrance to the Ferelden Refugees centre / shop thing.

He can loan you the money.

If you can't raise the funds, you'll be able to utilize the quest "Friends in Low Places" (link to the wiki).

Thank you so much! How cool is that?  I was so worried I'd have to start again.

I note it is going to cost me quite a bit though, considering Ill miss out on the 50gold I got last time for funding it myself.

I think you get 50 for taking the loan and 100 for funding it yourself IIRC.

The 50 gold you got was the same amount you paid into it. Basically you get the money back that you can then spend later maybe. That quest they mentioned just takes that out of the equation.

Yeah thats what I meant. You get it back when you fund it, but I dont think you get it back, if you have to take the loan.

Don't forget to use runes of fortune to give youself a lot of extra gold over the course of the game. There's a nice guide about it here.

Really works like a charm. On my latest (mage) playthrough I paid the 50 sovereigns to Bartrand and I had over 70 sovereigns left when I started the deep roads expedition. Granted I only bought all companion armor upgrades, ability and skill tomes (which are actually quite expensive) but that's about all you need.

Oh and for extra money (Not recommended on higher difficulties) you should always sell or store every potion (minus 1 or 2 health potions just in case) you find. If you have no or just a few potions you'll almost always get them as extra drops from chests and enemies, which you can sell again at about 3-4 silver each. Doesn't look like much but it adds up really fast.

I don't usually bother with RoF. I'm cheapskate enough not to buy anything that costs over 30 sovereign (let alone 100+ sovs) - the cost-benefit-ratio is just bad. You'll get good enough items as loot, the only expensive things worth buying are the tomes.

You can swim in it like Scrooge McDuck.

If you don't use RoF, you will not get that much money.

Follow the money guide in the strategy section. It really works. :D

There are some sweet items in act 2 and 3 with a pretty high price tag (stealth boots, etched ring of the twins, robes of unblemished cleanliness) that make the RoF worth it.

I also approve of the Scrooge McDuck stylings.

OK guys. I maxed out on RoF's. I did have 27 gold not 21 and also had the mage quest left, where the Templar wants you to go in the cave, and talk to them. (not sure how I missed that?) I managed to get up towards 35 gold, so still had to borrow the money. I hadn't seen that quest before though, so I enjoyed it.

After the Deep Roads, the Dwarf turned up at my new mansion, and demanded an extra 100 gold. I was initially sympathetic and open to negotiation, but he proceeded to threaten my family. I would like to have maybe employed him in some capacity. However, after his threats, the Dwarf had to die. I refused his demands, and killed him in Lowtown.

I have seen a really nice staff (Cold Blooded) from a vendor up on the wounded coast. Its about 113 gold though, so I'm glad I stacked up on RoF's. I wish I had come across this from the start, but at least I know now.

it's good in act 2 but in act 3 there are much better staves to be had, and 113gp less to buy them with!!  recommend looking up the lost swords quest in wiki...

So, you suggest giving the stave a miss, and wait until act3, interesting. Ill check that sword quest out, many thanks.

Edit: Thats quite a nice stave you get from that quest, for not much expense. I have one concern though. It says that one of the swords is to be found at the Wounded Coast, on one of the dead Tal Vashoth in Act 1.  If I picked this up and sold it (cant remember)because it appeared in my junk list, will I still be able to complete the quest?  It does say this particular sword is availlable in later acts elsewhere, but doesnt state if this is the case, if you picked up the original?

The qunari blades will all be available in act 3. So in act 3 check the wounded coast. Remember when turning them in not to ask for gold.

My mage was elemental bloodmage so I bought cold blooded. If you run rof on yourself and all companions throughout the game, you'll be able to buy it and a few other act 2 goodies

Thanks for that.  Why is one of the Qunari swords even available in ACT1?  Its going to have no meaning if the quest does not trigger until Act3.  At least if I have sold it, I can get it again.

Im still thinking about the staves.  I really like the Cold Blooded one, with cold attacks maxed out on my mage.  I am keeping in mind what the other poster said though, in respect of better staves in Act 3.  I think Ill check them all out on the Dragon Age Wiki.  If there isn't a far superior cold stave in Act 3, I will get Cold Blooded.

I've had over 90g before giving the 50g to Bartrand and never used RoF. The only extra things I buy are a few Maker's Sigh to respec everyone the way I want and to make sure any rogue I run with has enough cunning to pick all locks each year.

This was before learning just how awesome the tomes are. But the last play I did where I bought the first year tome, I still had about 10-20g left after doing all quests and handing money to Bartrand.

I'm used to thinking like a miser in these games. There is usually a certain point in many games where you don't have to worry about spending money and can buy the equipment/potions/upgrades that you need for yourself and your buddies. For example, the last time I played DAO on a mage, I saved until I had 128g to buy the best staff in the game. It was a good investment and lasted me through most of Awakening as well. Even after doing that, I still had hundreds of gold at the end of DAO.

Don't worry, in Act 3, go to the location they mention on the wounded coast and the blade will be there.  There may be better overall staves out there (for a lot less gold) but none give 30% additional cold damage.

if your running DA2 on PC, you can also get the evolving mod for many of the staves... Cold Blooded in particular... makes it useful for the whole game. Also, its perhaps the best looking stave in the game as well so worth having... if your running it on console... thats less fortunate ...
