Well, I wouldn't say he has been recast, I think the article is taking some liberties with the facts as they stand. We do know that Mark Meer did Mordin's voice for the ME3 demo, most likely as a placeholder so they could show that particular demo at E3.

It's possible that BioWare just haven't got round to contacting Michael yet. It would be a shame if they did go with someone else, Michael's VO for Mordin in ME2 was stellar!

What's surprising to me is he said he hasn't even been contracted to do the voice again. With this game originally scheduled to ship around the holidays, and they haven't even been in contact with their voice actors, they must have been extremely behind schedule.

I'm not sure how long the "but they still have X months..." excuse will hold.

I concur with you. I hope they take enough time to do the game justice. Especially considering it's the bloody final game.

Hmm. Anyways, Beattie not having been contracted at this time is not evidence that Mordin's VA role has been "officially recast." Something is only official when it has been confirmed, which you say in this thread you've been unable to do.

So far we only have evidence that Beattie hasn't been contracted. Article title is misleading and jumping the gun.

Well, we've emailed EA to get an official statement.

Good. Argh...it would just be so wrong to have a different person voice him. It wouldn't be the same character anymore.

Really, really hope Beattie comes back as Mordin.  Without the voice, he just isn't Mordin.  Full stop.  Don't mess with my favorite character.  :crying:

Updated character models don't break my suspension of disbelief, but a character sounding completely different shatters it.

Fix this, Bioware.

I think it's too soon to assume that Mordin is recast, though I see this as confirmation that he will have a much smaller role, mostly, smaller part castings are done much later than principle cast recordings, most likely they haven't approached him yet.

It doesn't say that he's been recast, just that he hasn't been contacted yet. Kinda jumping the gun.

Reason seems simple enough: $$$. Save money by having actors voice multiple characters. EA budget crap.

Hoping this is not the case!

So nine months before the game is to be released they haven't yet started the voice recording for the game.
Shocking. Not.

I can´t describe my feelings, if Michael Beattie won´t return. He had some of the best voice overs in ME2. Makes me wonder who else doesn´t return...

I highly doubt they'll be having Meer as Mordin. [Although the idea of an entire game voiced exclusively by Mark Meer does intrigue me....] It's more likely they simply haven't contacted Mordin's VA yet, considering the months of dev time yet to go. We also know some of the levels are still being written and scripted. It's possible they don't even have the end dialogue done for Mordin for his VA to even record.

I would say it's a pretty safe bet that he's not a squadmember, however.

And then it's "they still have eight months" followed by seven months, six, five, four...

People should realize that Bioware could very well take some decisions with ME3 that will be controversial and counter to what the BSN community wants to see. They did so with Mass Effect 2.

That said, any evidence that Mordin has been "officially recast" is only circumstantial, as the author of that article failed to provide confirmation for their claim. Right now it can only be inferred that somone else is officially voicing Mordin, and even that is flimsy.

People who are really concerned by this possibility should ask Casey via Twitter. Maybe he'll have something to say about it.

specifically the article does not state he's been recast: recast =/= not having been approached yet OR being officially passed on.

Wait, another part of the article interests me: Didn't Ginny do the voice directing for FemShep and Jacob?

That's a fire-able offense in itself.

I'm finding this hard to credit. In the E3 trailer with Mordin, it sure sounded like the old Mordin we all know and love.

Edit: Apparently Mark Meer did Mordin's voice at E3.  I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention.

I really hope they reference that.

"Mordin, what happened to your voice?"

"Inflamation of internal lung tissue. Scarred vocal cords. Fixed with SCIENCE. Nothing to worry about."

They don't save a lot of money that way. Voice acting isn't exactly the most lucrative line of work.

Besides, in E3 2009, Thane had a different voice actor than he has now. I'm not worried. Maybe I should be, but I'm not.

Mordin was one of the standouts. As to ME2 what the Joker was to The Dark Knight, for sure. The voice talent and direction behind the character played no small part in his excellence.

Title is kinda misleading. He hasn't been cast yet, and that's enough to cause concern, but this is far from a confirmation that he has been replaced.

Not going to despair just yet. That is a standard sounding response that I have seen turn out to be incorrect in the long run before. I know they have started recording VA thanks to the magic of twitter, but there is every possibility that for whatever reason they have yet to complete all of it. I seem to remember that happens something in a project as large as this to save costs from potential changes that require hiring the VA all over again etc.

It would be more than a little bonkers for them to 'cut costs' by not bringing back Michael Beattie, who I would imagine is a bit more affordable than some of the VAs on their cast list and has proven a fan and critic favourite with his version of Mordin.

Don't bring Anders into this either, as last I heard a big part of that was Greg Ellis schedule. Hence why he took the role of Cullen instead (he wasn't just cold shouldered).

To top it all off why not just use the actual stand in VA for Mordin's section of the demo if this were the case? Presumably they haven't recorded his stuff yet because otherwise they would have had that resource available, and as such they haven't contacted ANYONE about playing Mordin. Considering Mordin is confirmed to be in the game, and considering the fact that there is an infinitely small chance of them using Meer's dialogue for the final game I think this is a long shot from being 'recast'.

Let's not take this thread in that direction.

Jacob's voice was fine, as was FemShep's, even if the latter's isn't my cup of tea either.

Didn't Keith David say the same thing a few months before ME2 came out? He was still in the cast as Anderson. They probably just don't record voices for more minor roles until the game is closer to its release date.

Good news - Voice-recording for ME3 was already being done pre-E3 (Garrus and Anderson have completely new lines in the E3 demo).

Bad news - Its fairly common in the videogame industry to bring VA's in during the latter months of production -

"It is common (and bad) practice to seek voice actors late in the development process when the script is almost finished when "getting the voices in" is high on the agenda. The process: get game working, rewrite voice script to match final gameplay, cast actors, record actors, get voice assets in game and get it mastered before the deadline.

A high percentage of my time is spent talking with dev teams and publishers regarding best practice as this common practice, deemed expedient, doesn't lead to good results."
- Mark Estdale

My guess is that larger roles like key npc's and squadmates are being recorded first, with minor npc's and cameos following in the later stages of production.

sounds similar to some movies. Green Lantern for instance didn't case the VA's for killowog and Tamar-Re until April/May and the movie released in June. Granted we're talking maybe 10-15 minutes worth of screen time between the two. But i'm just saying.

On Twitter Pat Weekes was just talking about how the first few days of writing a character are challenging him right now. He wrote this tweet in the style of Mordin, implying Mordin's script hasn't even been finished yet.

Way too early to panic about this.
