It is possible as well that the characters you did not romance with do not join you on the normandy but make much greater appearances than the others that you have no options with which would greatly reduce the size of squad members but would cause issues if you did not romance with any of them.

Finally so far my prediction appears to be correct that the ones you see having major roles in the demos are potential LI's and the ones that are not are just drivers of the plot (Legion, Mordin and Wrex)

Worst case scenario is choices you've made not really having any proper consequences (we got it in me2 with e-mails and such but they got away with it by telling us we'd really only see consequences in me3) and characters importance being decided not by how important they are to you or to the plot overall but by whether or not they are alive in every single playthrough.

If we get another me2 scenario where every character who could die is immediately given a smaller role, be it temp squadmate or cameo or the dreaded e-mail then to me anyway the game becomes something i'm not that interested in.

The permanent squad should be a mix of me1 and me2 specific characters otherwise what was the point of me2? if bioware decide this is too hard to implement or that we will all be happy with a one mission temp role for some of the characters we like then for me this might be the last time i believe anything they say.

I'll probably still buy me3 just to finish the trilogy but if it falls into any of the scenarios i've suggested, after me3 i'm done. The funny thing is that i really don't think bioware would miss me or people like me because if they go this route they've already decided we don't count anway.

I kinda think that all the main characters (squadmates) in ME1/2 could/would/should have their place as squadmates in ME3. You could have the smaller squad by being able to recruit so and so many of them though.

Just my wishlist though.

One of my favs is already confirmed as permanent, so even "worst case" won't be real disaster.
Bad cases character-wise?
1) Miranda betraying Shepard and returning to Cerberus to be killed later
2) During entire game Kaidan will have only 3 dialogues, designed to fit all: romanced in ME1, romanced anew as m/m, romanced anew as m/f, not romanced (a.k.a. maximal neutral dialogues)
3) mind melting with Liara after every mission to get information about Protheans/Reapers

So, what am I going to do in case of rather bad scenarios? Play ME3 once than give to friend and pretend it never existed, go write fanfiction.

There is only one reasonable and mature way to react. Get angry (and maybe drunk, but that's optional) and spam the forums with complains and petty insults against the developers.

When you say optional, do you mean "optional squad member", because if so, I don't think we'll see that at all.

I think you "HAVE TO HAVE" and "SIDELINED" lists are probably spot-on.

OPTIONAL, though, I think all those people will be IN the game, and most likely on your ship, but I don't think all of them will be available as squad members.

Garrus and Tali are confirmed as "permanent" squad members (but less permanent that Ash/Kai, Liara and James Vega - probably Garrus/Tali can either leave the squad or die or something - and might be dead in your ME2 import), but I don't think we'll see any of the others on the list for more than a mission or two each, maybe not even that - Thane, I'm guessing, will be incapacitated by Kepral's by now. I'll be the others have various excuses too.

I think there may be other "permanent"-but-optional squad members, but they'll likely be new, and related to the story.
