I think the "big" reapers we see like sovereign originally were the smaller reaper we see in the demo but evolved/constructed a larger shell around itself.

The human reaper that the collector's were building was probably going to be a smaller reaper. over many millenia it would get a outer shell equiped with tentacles and the works like sovereign.

Thats how I look at it. <shrugs>

No. At the time the Reapers were supposed to show up around humans were only reaching the period of A.D. According to in game dialouge the Reapers were supposed to come back around the time of the Rachnai Wars. The Rachnai wars were infleunced by the Reapers who most likley indotronated or confused the Rachani which caused them to rebel to soften up the rest of the galaxy. At this point Human were again like I said barley advanced.

I don't think that numbers are that important. One theory I came up with was that the harvested populations are used to create a prototype and once that prototype has been tuned to perfection, more Reapers from the same species are made using cloned raw material.

I like your theory, it makes sense at least to me.

It's been known for awhile that not all Reapers are space dreadnaughts like Sovereign.

My favorite speculation is that once the reaper's core is finished, a shell is built around it to "specialize' it into a dreadnought, or a "spider" like the one we see in the video, or a shuttle, etc...
Imagine that the reapers could change their shells to adapt to a given situation... That's a very personal speculation though, but if I was the reapers, I'd have chosen this system.

No longer speculation: been confirmed by devs awhile back.

The 'species representation' resides within a core, while the external form is specialized as whatever type of Reaper, ie dreadnaughter/walker/etc.

I'm aware of that, but the spider-reapers seem too small to host a proper core, if that's what the human-reaper hybrid was supposed to be. Or perhaps they use special, smaller ones. I don't know. That's why I was curious as to what other people think.
