And Merrill never betrayed Hawke. Merrill was working on a lifelong quest that is what the Dalish are honestly about. Discovering and restoring their lost culture, which the Eluvian would be a part of. The rest of her clan obviously lost sight of this. And were a bunch of morons who couldn't form opinions on their own without their Keeper who wasn't taking her duties seriously, but instead was trying to be a mother before a leader.
And Carver joining the templars I think CAN be a form of betrayal. He throws a hissy fit when he gets left behind from the Deep Roads. He's trying to be his own person but I think he joined the templars only because it's what would hurt Hawke emotionally the most. It was a get back at Hawke thing. He didn't join the Templars because he believed in the order.

Reading this you sound very ignorant, you also sound like a child.

In Origins, it was the Darkspawn corruption in the mirror that affected the Dalish Origin and Tamlen. Not the mirror itself. In Witch Hunt, every elf who went into those ruins did get corrupted, yet Merrill and the elves in the alienage weren't affected in the least. So we know the corruption was removed. In Origins, when you talk to the story tellers, or any Dalish for that matter, its ALL about recovering their lost ways, getting a home, and teaching the city elves.
What I saw in DA2 was Merethari making vague speculations born out of fear, she wouldn't even consider studying lore on eluvians because she was far too afraid of it. She allowed herself to become an abomination and not tell anyone in the clan about it, so she put them in danger. She told the clan that Merrill was bringing back the corruption, and spent the majority of her time trying to tell Merrill she could come back after everyone was afraid of her and hated her.
In order to keep this on topic of the thread, I honestly feel that Merethari betrayed what the Dalish stand for, out of a motherly love for Merrill. And that love overrode common sense.

I think that if Hawke doesn't take Carver with him into the Deep Roads than it is he who betrays Carver. Judging by the dialogs with Bartrand and Varric in the very beginning on the Act 1 joining the Deep Roads expedition was very likely Carver's plan all along.
And since Aveline blocked his job application to the City Guard the poor boy can only choose between becoming a criminal or joining the Templar Order.
Oh, and I agree that Merrill never betrays Hawke!

The funny thing about Carver was in an earlier scene he mentions that he needs to find his own way, and I thought that was ok so I stopped bringing him with me. Time comes for the Deep Roads expedition and suddenly he wants in again. I couldn't help thinking, "Make up your mind Carver, if you want to find your own way go find it I'll still give you your share of the Deep Roads riches."
