Do they just die or do they have control of their own will. At the end Harbinger released control of the Collector General and it seemed like it had control over its own body so i would think it applies to the rest of the Collectors in the galaxy wherever they may be.

It would appear that they only had one base, and one huge ship. The reapers' overconfidence in their abilities might have done'em in, because of this.

Without the base and Harbingers direction, they would probably just die. I really didn't get the impression that they would even know how to function without a Reaper controlling them.

They're gone, as their role in the story is over.
Personally I didn't like the whole new filler villain appearing at the beginning, dying at the end, status quo remaining roughly the same, but alas.

They are toastified - either by timed radiation pulse or via explosion.
Its seems that in essence, ME 2 was the story of how Shep came back to life and the collectors died. The end.
Think of it as the ending of ME1, and no collectors exist. This is basically all that the story is about.

I wouldn't write them off just yet.
That would be one less enemy to fight in ME3. If I were Bioware I'd bring them back, and just have it so not every Collector was on the base. Maybe there is another Collector Cruiser out there, or Collectors aboard Reapers.
