I was thinking for the third game that the romance conflict if there is one can be a personal plot point in the game. Like if your character cheated on Ashley with Miranda in Mass Effect 2, Ashley out of anger in the game could betray you and the rest of humanity as a whole to the Reapers.
This situation could lead to her being taken by the Reapers then be infected by them. Then your character would be forced to fight against a Powerful reaper in one of your companions form. Then you have to make a huge decision like to spare her because you still love her thus endangering the galaxy as a whole or kill her and saving the universe.
I think this would be an interesting personally plot that could be done in the game to save you
former love interest but at the cost of the galaxy or kill them and save a trillion lives from the Reapers. (This situation can apply to any of the love interests like for Garrus Alenkco, tali, Miranda, Jacob or any of the other love interests in the past games.
