So during the collector ship I chose Assault Rifles for my Sentinal thinking I'd use the Mattock as an upgrade to my heavy pistol and a alternative to the Locust. Well it turns out that the Ammo per damage is nowhere near the Locust, and now basically all I use is the locust because I run out of ammo after killing a few guys with the Mattock... So was that a stupid decision? Will I get a better assault rifle?

The Mattock does a base damage of 50 (when the Locust does 20), and it fires as fast as you can pull the trigger/click the mouse button - so it really depends on what exactly you want from the weapon, since you can snipe with it.

Long Range I guess, but I don't want a sniper.

I was gonna switch to the vindicator but that doesn't seem to have much more more ammo at all...

For the mattock to work well ya need to head shot and have the bonus damage, the vindicator is good if you headshot as well but neither of them have huge amounts of ammo i'm afraid.

I just wanted the extra weapon to be an asset and it seems like the Locust just kills everything on its own, lol.

The game is balanced for Normal/Veteran difficulty. Are you playing on Hardcore or Insanity?

I had problems with the Vindicator's ammo capacity at first and switched back to the Avenger, but then I learned to aim instead of just spraying bullets left and right and hoping to hit the target. Afterwards, I had no ammo troubles because the Vindicator does much more damage than the Avenger. It's a precision weapon. I assume the same goes for the Mattock. Some people say the same thing about the Mantis vs the Viper, but the Mantis is better because it kills in 1 hit.

When you get used to the Locust, it is a pretty versatile weapon. But with that said, the Mattock is a great weapon when you get the feel of it. The Mattock is a hard hitting weapon, great when you have a squad of soldiers just entering an area. With its ammo capacity, it does make it hard to last in extended engagements without constantly looking for thermal clips, but if you use it right, you won't really have to worry about it.

The Vindicator is also fairly effective, though with that said, I feel it really shines with headshots. After using the Mattock, the Vindicator just lacks the punch to make anything else viable.

i love the mattock, i always start with it, then move to pistol ( carnifex) and finally the locust if i need. Locust is a great smg but it only fires like 5 shots before you have to reload.

I typically roll Mattock, Phalanx, and Tempest on my engineer.

The Tempest's rate of fire shreds biotic barriers at close range, and isn't hurting for ammo

What I do for all my Shepards is this:

Shepard uses the Locust, the Carnifex Hand Cannon, the grenade launcher (Or the Cain when available) and the Mantis (Or Widow if possible). My squadmates use the Tempest almost constantly. I never change what shotgun Jack uses, it doesn't make a difference to me. I'd like it if Garrus could use the Widow, but he can't unfortunately

I really like the Mattock on my Sentinels. But if it doesn't work for you, a shotgun works well with Sentinels too.

i use the mattock for AR and it seems to work fairly well. i understand your gripe about the amo, i dispise its amo cappacity also. but i just learned to conserve it more, and do strictly headshots.

for a vanguard it compliments shotgun pretty good in my opinion. i will charge at an enemy and spam the whole clip right in their face lol. with inferno amo the mattock is pretty beast, and a good weapon for squaddies.

speaking of ammo gripes, I used the incisor for the first time the other day, and couldn't believe the small amound of ammo in it, especially considering its a burst fire weapon. I was able to kill about 2-3 people with it before it ran out. On top of all that, one trigger pull is 3 shots, but picking up a thermal clip give you two rounds, wtf

I also play as a Sentinel and prefer the Mattock. The Locust is a beast yea,but so is the Mattock.

In other playthroughs I select the Shotgun, because the Geth Shoty is also a beast.

If you play Tali's recruitment mission on Hardcore or higher, you will receive a Geth pulse rifle(If i'm not mistaken of the name),and it is also a pretty nice weapon. I enjoy it alot. It is similar to a Locust in some ways. More ammo, power. Same accuracy.

I usually do not have a problem with ammo. Edit: Sorry "Warp Ammo"

incisor?
not sure which weapon that is, but you mentioned firing in bursts, im assuming it is the BR (vindicator battle rifle). that was my favorite before the mattock, its pretty decent on amo, and very precise for headshots. mainly because it reminds me of the halo BR, thats why i think i loved it :D

i do wish there was a better rifle for use, because most of them i dont like too much, and AR is my most used weapon :(. i have like 8 heavy weapon choices, and i hardly ever use that garbage. most of them are fail, and i seldom switch off the collector beam.

For you're own personal use, it does have a lot going against it. But equipped on your squadmates, it's pretty effective.

Yeah i've noticed squaddies equipped with it do very well with the burst fire, its treated almost like a br from halo in their hands

Geth Pulse Rifle all the way. Even better for classes that can get the Widow, since you cover all of the bases.
