For various reasons, be it weak marketing or the like, some fantastic titles can end up getting missed by gamers. Although Conker's Bad Fur Day is a close runner-up, I recently discovered my favorite cult classic game of all time(For anywhere that isn't japan, it's a cult classic) - Mother 3.

As much as I loved Earthbound/Mother 2, the 3rd managed to improve itself in every way imaginable. The problematic inventory system(specifically key items) had been completely re-done, the menus were far more responsive, and the combat sessions had been improved in both mechanics and presentation. The writing and creative art design were as memorable ever.

At the end of the day though, what part of  Mother 3 makes it my favorite cult classic game is the well-crafted storyline and characters. It holds a much deeper emotional resonance, provides a more diverse set of party members, and goes in more ambitious narrative directions than its predecessor. At one point or another, Mother 3 will move you in unexpected ways.

Since it never got an english translation, the vast majority of english-speaking countries haven't experienced Mother 3. Fan translations were made for the emulator copy online, since finding a japanese physical copy of the game is extremely rare.

Well, you know my pick for favorite. What's yours?

Something to keep in mind for your choice:
" "A cult following is a term used to refer to a group offans who are highly dedicated to a specific area of pop culture.
A film, book, band, or video game, among other things, will be said to
have a cult following when it has a small but very passionate fan base.""

So Mario, Halo, and Call of Duty are out of the picture. :)

American McGee's Alice - Came at a time when crazy platformers were all the rage and never sold all that well since it was on PC though for fans of the game they were pretty into it. It's become more well known since the sequal has come out for it but the first will always be a cult classic.

Jazz Jackrabbit - An attempt to cash in on the 90's platformer craze with games like Mario,Sonic and Zool becoming popular mascots for their systems Jazz was supposed to be the PC's big mascot but never caught on as much as those other titles. Still those who loved it at the time remember it as a good game.

Um Jammer Lammy - Rhythm game and sort of a side story for the much more well known Parrapa The Rapper but this one never caught on and they just went ahead and made Parrapa The Rapper 2 instead of continuing with the universe side stories. Personally i think this one is much more fun.

Raptor: Call of the Shadows

Great Vertical shooter on PC.  One of the reasons why GOG is so awesome.

For me has to be Advent Rising It was buggy, missing cutscenes and had some horrible combat mechanics. But I loved it the story was solid and it was so much fun. Alternatively Solar Jetman on the NES. Hard but rewarding.

As previously mentioned, Raptor and Advent Rising are among my favorites as well as Lemmings if you can call it a "cult" classic.

Are Mount & Blade and The Witcher already considered cult classics? These were only released a few years ago.

I would say no since the Witcher is barely 3 or 4 years old.

Body Harvest 64. Also Battlezone rise of the Black dogs, the 64 seemed to have had alot of cult and sleeper titles.

And Didn't it sell well over 1 million copies when it came out? I don't think some people understand what "cult classic" means
