Mass Effect 3: BioWare on surprises, inspiration and tough decisions - ComputerAndVideoGames.com

A nice interview, nothing incredibly notable, but some cool things such as the inspiration for the Normandy design

Yeah, you know we actually referenced a lot from Final Fantasy: The
Spirits Within. We used a lot of their GUIs and the way they did their
ship - that was kind of like in some of the early designs for the
Normandy.

This is just Part 1, with Casey Hudson and Derek Watts, the Art Director.  Looks like 2 and 3 will come later, to feature lead sound designer Rob Blake as well as gameplay designers Christina Norman and Corey Gaspur.

Interesting. It's been ages since I first saw Final Fantasy, but I never would have thought that was the main inspiration for the Normandy. Mind-boggling.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits within is beautifully visually, and I quite liked the the film and art style overall. Interesting to see it was referenced by the team/

Anyway, this is cool...lookng forward to the rest.

The uncanny valley is quite noticeable though.

Every main character is in there somewhere, kind of doing the thing that is right for that character. Zaeed for example is a very simple character and what he's up to is different to, say, Liara, who is very pivotal.

Losing faith to the variables, are we.

It came out back in 2001 so it's not that big of a deal in my view.

notice the line about "RPGS are not about loot and stats to us"?

Hopefully that settles that tired old horse on these forums.

Interesting interview.

I had almsot completely forgotten about the FF movie as it's ages since I've watched it, but I agree it was very well done when it was released. Even though I didn't like the story in it much, I apreciated the artwork that had gone into that movie.

I'm a little disheartened by his comment on their changes of old characters. It seems he is blisfully unaware (or just choose to ignore) those that really oppose some of the changes.

When he makes statements like "You know, they've been pretty receptive to the changes we've made. We haven't really had much negative feedback from them." and you can just look back at some of the threads in these forums on this very subject, it just feels like this isn't the place he collects feedback from...

Can't say I'm too pleased with what he thinks rpg means, either.

You beat me to it...

I can see it:

The galaxy lies in ruins. The Reapers have been destroyed thanks to Commander Shepard's heroic sacrifice. The losses were unimaginable.

But amidst all the destruction, a lone figure, an unbeatable soldier, an immovable juggernaut stands tall. And as the dust settles and the smoke clears, he utters the phrase that historians would want to remember, if there were any historians left:

"Gawd damn it."

Only in the sense that for some of us, it means Bioware now admits they aren't making real rpgs anymore.

It's a sad state for the industry when everyone makes the same brown paste.

Lol salsa, make your own RPG as you see fit if you choose.  If the developer sits there and says "this is what we mean this game to be," I don't see how you can state otherwise.  You can disagree, of course, but ultimately the game is what it is.

Well, it is? The plot certainly isn't about Shepard finding the magical crystal of light. It's about him gathering a galactic army to defend themselves against the Reapers.

Indeed, somewhere the word RPG got mangled.

Maybe it's cus I'm "old" ... but I still remember playing RPGs with friends around a dinner table that were purely narrative & character driven... there were no dice, no pencils, no character sheets, no stats... just each of us playing a D&D-type RPG without the rulebooks and such. Playing a character without thinking about it as a stat sheet made it feel more... pure... than when I played a AD&D character in Faerun.

Youngins today don't understand what Roleplaying game means.

Sigh... I'm old. :(

I never really get this, shooters like Mass Effect are incredibly
stat driven (number of shots, damage per shot, shield strength etc etc) just
the stats are hidden from the public eye. If they truly believed that 'phat
lewt' wasn't a part of the game they wouldn't be dangling the N7 arsenal provocatively
in front of people in an attempt to get them to shell out for the collectors
edition. Also they'd of never released the firepower pack which did nothing but
add 'loot and stats'.

While the concept of upgrading weapons with V VI VII versions is
a bit (well a lot) silly. It doesn't mean that they just went away in ME2,
you just lost any control over the upgrades, something which they're reintroducing
in ME3 with the workbench.

So from my perspective they're saying one thing and doing another...

I already did. A sci-fi one, but it's pen and paper based so doesn't matter much in the regard of computer games.

And your statement is odd. Either you didn't understand what I wrote, or you just made a comment for the sake of making a comment.
