One thing that age has done to me is make me massively allergic to grind; my time is just too valuable. I used to love open world games and now I just get so bored by the repetitiveness of them. That's why I have stuck with BioWare and essentially stopped playing Bethesda. Fallout 3 was the last straw for me -- never again.

I just came from "grinding" to level 69 from level 1 in Borderlands..... my time is worth nothing..... oh us teenagers.

As for the topic, Im 19 and really can't wait a whole damn year for ME3! Maybe I'll hibernate or cryogenically freeze myself.

To answer the OP's question, I was super-geeked for the release of ME2. It's fair to say that the original ME, along with GTA San Andreas and KOTOR brought me firmly into the age of modern gaming. I'm a gamer now, at age 40 (well, in a few days), and those 3 games are the reasons why.

"I could talk about that text only Trash-80 sequel game in the desert, but I'll stop. 30+ is old? I've outlived Adlib, the first SLI (VooDoo) cards, computers with no HDD (had DUAL 5 1/4 floppies"

I started out with a Tandy 1000 and 512K memory and two 5 1/4 360K drives and that beautiful phosphor green monochrome monitor (I hated the amber ones). Text games were king and I loved Leather Goddesses of Phobos. And who could forget the command line with Dos 2.11, Edlin, and setting up IRQ's and memory addresses in order to get your software to run with your sound card? Those were the days and the 8088 was king at a blistering 4.77 Mhz.

Back in the day, you looked for gamers in the office for tech support because they knew the PC's best. It isn't like that today though. Times have changed, but the pleasure of gaming has not. Like you, I will always be a gamer.

With regard to HL2 episode 3, that is likely vaporware by now.

"Yes, that's a pretty widely held number for the average gamer, it's on a bunch of surveys. It's a huge misconception in the industry, chasing after the teens, they're actually a minority in gaming."

I think this depends largely on what you're trying to make/sell. If you want to sell multiplayer first-person shooters, your market IS teenaged boys. Good luck trying to expand that to include the grandma who's taken up Wii Resorts Sports and is pushing up the average gamer age.

On the other hand, if you're trying to create the kinds of immersive experiences that BioWare made its name creating, then I think the potential audience for that kind of thing can be expanded greatly because, depending on the story involved, different games may draw different kinds of audiences.

The Mass Effect and Uncharted series are the only currently running series that I get ridiculously hyped up for. Their sort of the top teir "The rest of the world fades away when a new one comes out," games for me. Then comes the really good series like Dragon Age, Assassins Creed, and others that I get moderatly excited about. I've also found that I really enjoy games made by Ninja Theory (Heavenly Sword, Enslaved), I'm sure Andy Serkis has something to do with that, so I pay attention to what their doing fairly often. Too bad it seems I'm one of the few who feel this way.

The E3 demo for the new Tomb Raider has me excited. I never played the old games but I'll be getting this one.

I remember being really excited for the first Mortal Kombat on the SNES. I remember clipping a $5 coupon out of my Nintendo Power and dragging my mom to the mall about an hour before the stores opened.

ME2 was by far the most anticipated game or movie or media that ive ever went crazy for. the only time ive ever done a midnight release was with ME2. unfortunately for me, ME2 left me disappointing and confused.

its safe to say ME1 is the greatest game ive ever played, the reason i own/play/talk about videogames, i mean im not the type of person that sits on forums and talks about a bunch of video games. this is it for me. ME2 on the other hand, i couldnt really care less about.

ME3 "looks" like ME2:episode 2, so my interest will most likely never be as peaked as it was for ME2.

unless i see a video of adepts ripping off limbs and crushing skulls, i dont think ME3 will ever be what i wanted it to be.

I pranced about wringing my hands like a ditsy school girl for many months waiting for Civilization 5... I bought it off Steam and was literally watching the download progress on release day for nearly 1.5 hours, jaw agape like some neanderthal -- dying in anticipation of playing.

I behaved, sadly, the same way for ME1, ME2 and ... well... ME3.

I think that it is fair to say that BioWare has done some really incredible things with the Mass Effect series. First, it really makes you care about the story and that is the heart and soul of an RPG. By marrying the story to a good combat system in ME2 and apparently even going one better in ME3 (judging by the E3 vids), you have to believe that it is going to be a great game given that they have slid back a little to the RPG side.

Anytime you create a hybrid, you take a chance. But I think that BioWare has found the right feel for the Mass Effect series or else they wouldn't have die hard fans like us talking about a game that is scheduled for March 2012 release. In fact, I would be disappointed if the Reapers were the end of the Mass Effect franchise. While continuing the series to MMO would be a great idea for some, I would like to see the development of a stand alone game with DLC that continues the story arcs like an old serial movie. To my knowledge, that has never been tried with video games and I believe that BioWare could do it and do it well.

In fact, it could even be a better property than an MMO because you don't have the hardware investment for gaming servers and upkeep. Talk about looking forward to the next installment, I think that the fans could potentially require medication if the story is good. j/k But the point is still valid. It all comes down to the writers because I think that BW has the game mechanics well in hand so all that would be required is a killer story line and lead time to prep and code.

With DLC being released each quarter and ending on a serious note or a cliff hanger, I bet these boards will be on fire with speculation as to what is coming next. That would be about the only thing that would surpass my anticipation for ME3.

I was pretty psyched for SC2, Bioshock 2, and now ME3 and Diablo 3. I guess 23 is not that old, or maybe I'm just immature this way :P

Woohoo, I'm 25! At least a month or two of "not-old" to go, then!

On a more serious note: DA:O, Starcraft II (bit of a disappointment, there, but meh.), Starcraft , Warcraft III.
Oh, and Wing Commander Prophecy looked promising, untill I noticed it wouldn't be about Blair.
EDIT: Baldur's Gate II! How could I have forgotten about you? And, consequently, NWN (bit of a let-down, untill I discovered a good RP server). And KotOR. <3 KotOR. (KotOR 2 was a let-down too, because you could clearly see how the game had been rushed out the door.)

At the age of 23, the only games I geeked out over were any Call of Duty game made by Infinity Ward, Halo until Reach, and the Mass Effect series. As for other games in the industry, only Arkham Asylum actually caught my interest, while games that I wanted to buy and kept were F.E.A.R. 2, EndWar, and Splinter Cell Conviction.

Games I regretted buying:

Both of the Mercenaries games (Bought both with a $20 price-tag each, beaten them once, and sold them to Gamestop)

Fallout 3 (all of those stupid amounts of glitches and console lock-ups killed my 80+ hours of gameplay, and I willingly sent it to Gamestop)

Alpha Protocol (The Treyarch of RPGs)

Crackdown 1 (even used)

Resident Evil 5 (co-op killed my interest in their future games, and this is ****ing Capcom we're talking about)

GTA IV

Gears of War franchise

Super Mario Brothers 3! Man did I look forward to that game. I even imported the game from Japan to be able to play it earlier. Didnt understand sh*t what was being said but then again it wasnt really needed to play the game anyway :) But i later bought the european release as well and then the super mario all stars relase to SNES. Also The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was highly anticipated.

I have to admin that it was a long time i had that feeling about an upcoming game. But Mass Effect 3 has brought me back to the good old days :)

The Witcher 2 Assassins of kings - a game I was really hyped before the media hype began :) Was worth the wait and anxiety :D
Before that... Oblivion maybe? Before I actually played it... the dissapointement was like a rift in the universe ;(
Now its ME3 but a notch less than Witcher2.

And applying your rigorous standards I'm an ancient gamer :(

Technically I'm not an old gamer but...

I'm not really hyped up for ME3 at all.
It's almost like Bioware is deliberately trying to make me uninterested.

I haven't anticipated a game this much and with this much hype and excitement since Kingdom Hearts 2. The main difference is that they didn't keep changing the release date 4 different times over 2 or 3 years >:(

The last game to get me excited like a little kid on Christmas Eve was Supreme Commander. I grew up on Total Annihilation and it played its part in defining me as a gamer. A game promising to be its spiritual successor was guaranteed to get me excited.

None of the Mass Effect games give me the same vibe, but I'm pretty hyped about ME3, just not on the same level as SupCom leading up to its release. No obsessing and latching on to every news everyday, no mad rush out to buy a copy on release day, no quivering with the game in hand while I check it out and kissing the box as I take it home. Just taking quick skims through the previews that happen to show up on the gaming sites I frequent, then setting aside Priority Buys slot in my monthly budget for them, and finally sitting back and patiently waiting, before picking it up on the same day I buy my weekly groceries. That's about as excited as I get for any games these days.

Ah yes, the good old days of Ultima Underworlds, Sierra quests etc.
I was genuinely excited for Deus Ex 2 - that didn't turn out so well :|

Younger gamers say Freelancer was amazing - I'd say Wing Commander: Privateer schools it, more complex and interesting combat at least.
As for the Mass Effect trilogy, I'm psyched for ME3 on it's own right but if you think about the narrative there are quite a few parallels with Star Control 2.

I agree with Javiera, if you want to make a modern good looking game with the epic scale of Star Control 2 you can't do that with just two people anymore. And the budgets involved just demand you aim for a lower common denominator.

If anything it's recognizing that something "has been done before" that is slightly offputting as you grow older :P

I'm not old, though I have been gaming for quite some time (well over a decade). I still can get excited for most of the games that I buy, mostly because I don't buy that much games because many games just look the same. So moreover I go for what I think is gonna be triple AAA material, which isn't much these days.

Started computer gaming at the age of 12 in 1992 on an Amiga 500. Played anything I got my hands on without spending much money. Moved on to the PC, but never followed the latest releases, mostly picked up games that were a bit older for the cheaper prize. Games that I have kind of obsessed over include Deus Ex, Tomb Raider Series, Civil War Generals II, Morrowind, Gothic 1 and 2.
The first games that I followed prior to release and bought day 1 were Gothic 3 and Oblivion, both a bit of personal dissappointments and I learned too keep expectations lower.
I kind of lost interest in gaming after that, the only game I played in that period was the Witcher, because I was a fan of the stories.
I came across Mass Effect in the Spring of 2009 and it blew my mind and brought me back to gaming. I would have followed the release of ME2 more closely, but that was a busy time in my life and I only had time for it 3 months after release. I got DA:O after that and DA2 was the first game, where I followed development and release very closely and the first I ever pre-ordered.
Now with the announcement of ME3, I have embraced my inner geek more than ever and I am having a lot of fun. Everything else took a bit of a back seat, but it is what I need right now. I enjoy it while it lasts, can't go on forever. Other games I await eagerly are DX:HR and Skyrim.
