The sleeper hit for me is League of Legends, it's just an amazing game, completly blindsided me.
Edit - Also looking forward to Guild Wars 2, I'm surprised that so few other people here are, it really looks to be the next step in MMOs.

The last game I remember buying that I was disappointed about because it just wasn't what I was expecting was Brutal Legend (I'm an old school Tim Schafer fan going back to Monkey Island). The game grew on me as I played it, but I still feel that it was a jumbled mess of ideas cooked into a soup of mediocrity.
Currently waiting with bated breath for:
- Mass Effect 3
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
- Bioshock: Infinite
- Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
In the recent past, these were first day purchases I was excited for in advance, since Mass Effect 2. I apparently have managable expectations, because all of them were enjoyable for me:
- Alice: Madness Returns (Enjoyable, but long and repetitive)
- Portal 2 (Awesome)
- Total War: Shogun 2 (Awesome)
- LA Noire (Enjoyable, but super repetitive, saved by being shorter than most Rockstar games)
- Limbo (Amazing, especially for an indie game)
- Civilization 5 (Awesome)
- Final Fantasy XIII (Enjoyable, way too linear)
- Fable 3 (Enjoyable, exactly what I learned to expect from Molyneaux regardless of what he says in interviews)
- Red Dead Redemption (Enjoyable, but a bit too long and repetitive)
- Bioshock 2 (Enjoyable, better than its predecessor in some respects, worse in others)
- Darksiders (Enjoyable, a bit too long and repetitive)
- Mass Effect 2 (Amazing, was better than I expected after the first one)
There are probably other games that I'll buy first day or week that I'm just forgetting at the moment. Looking at my list, I'm also apparently not someone who restricts himself to a single genre anymore. Go gaming diversity!

- Battlefield 3
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Far future waiting list:
- Half Life 2 Episode 3
- Beyond Good and Evil 2
- Mirrors Edge 2
- Jade Empire 2 (do it Bioware, just do it!)
ok I would be suprised if one of these is released before we germans shut down all our nuclear reactors (planned for 2022) but hope never dies, yes?

I loved the original so much, one of the best puzzle platformers I've ever played. I had forgotten they've been working on this and making lots of excuses about why it isn't done yet. *fingers crossed that it actually comes out one day and is awesome like the last one*SAE100 wrote...

I remember way back in the day (1993), being really excited about Myst. I have a graphic arts background, and am very focused on visual elements, so for me, that was exciting as hell. Then Riven, Exile, etc., etc. Strangely enough, swapping out 4-6 discs wasn't that big of a deal back then, but now I find it appalling. I still have the original boxes for those games, and they're huge.
Of course, that's when I used to play on PC; since then (maybe because I'm old, lol) I switched over to console. I'm not all that interested in games where you can't possibly die anymore. I've graduated to the next level, I guess.
I was really excited for Fallout 3. As others have said, it was probably one of the glitchiest games of all time (next to Oblivion), but I really enjoyed it between restarts. That said, I was thrilled when New Vegas was announced. Sadly, it just felt like an expansion to me. More recently, I was excited about DA2, Infamous 2, Enslaved, and Portal 2 (which is an absolute gem). My husband and I were mildly excited about Hunted, but it fell a little short of expectations.
Now, I'm really looking forward to Darksiders 2, Uncharted 3, Gears 3, ME3, and DA3. I feel like I'm forgetting something...
Edit: OMG, I forgot Skyrim!

Wait, how far back are we going? Does that make me old?
Good lord, I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers.
What about Monkey Island & Loom. Now if that's not a nostalgic blast from the past I don't know what is.
I could talk about that text only Trash-80 sequel game in the desert, but I'll stop. 30+ is old? I've outlived Adlib, the first SLI (VooDoo) cards, computers with no HDD (had DUAL 5 1/4 floppies), 40 lbs "portable" computers. I'll game till I die. If the wife and kids don't understand, to bad. There is one benefit to being an "older" gamer, with a job I can afford equipment that will run anything I want. I've always built my own computers. Where as in my 20's I had to scrap money together for that 4800 bps modem. Games come and go and there have been some good ones, but everyone keeps innovating and trying new things when new technology comes out, it's great. I play something old every once in a while, but there is always more good new stuff to play.
That's a WEE bit before my time; the earliest I go back was Wolfenstein and Doom which are both memorable games that really had it's own atmosphere. But even before that I was exposed to computers and video games at a very early age, much farther back than memory serves me. Even right now, at the age of 28, I can say yes we are old farts when it comes to gaming. Some of the young uns of this generation should listen to the elders! People like you and I witnessed the birth of the early video games.
But, the ME series has been the best in a while for me. I only play PC, so can't comment on consoles.
Finally I leave with one of the best leaps in gaming. Games that kept there own clock. Used to be games ran by the MHz (not GHz) of the CPU, got a faster machine? Better hope you could turn off the turbo so you could play it at a normal speed. Enough of this though, bring on ME3! Maybe we should start an "old" thread, hang out and tell everyone to stay off our lawns!
Total Annihilation, another great game, but it's been improved and time rolls on. Have I dated myself yet?
Oh yeah HL2: Eposide 3, we'll be old by the time it comes out.
I don't suppose you remember Heretic and it's sequel Hexen? Now that's something that should be brought back.
And yes, Mass Effect is probably the only game I have geeked out for in a decade; before ME I actually stopped gaming for while because ambitious titles were hard to come by, but now I'm geeking all over like I did with Baldur's Gate & Deus Ex.

It's been a long time since I felt this excited, I lost interest in gaming for a period of about 10 years, but I got back into it with the release of TES:Oblivion. Now I try and squeeze it in whenever I can and now find that I get more hyped and giddy for various games each passing year...

Half Life 2 was another eagerly anticipated game.
But the game I've been most excited for was Mass Effect 2, and now Mass Effect 3. I honestly just hope I don't die or the world ends before 3 comes out or I would be PISSED, lol.

On the subject of old computers, I had a TRS80 hooked to a B&W TV for a monitor. I went to the library, got a programming book, and the first program I inputted made a cloverleaf of sine waves...in BASIC.

Haha, I wasn't quite that old, but I remember sobbing hysterically when WarCraft 2 wouldn't run on my dad's 486. It required 4MB RAM and I only had 2MB, lol.

The only other games that have come close to the immersion aspect(that I can rememebr...age you know plays with your memory) were Half Life 2 and Deadspace, followed distantly by the first three Splinter Cell games. In fact, the Mass Effect series excite me so much that after ME3 and any subsequent DLC's (if we are lucky) I actually may consider hanging up my controller and start watching sunsets...sigh...
Oh, and to those who look at being over 30 "old", I guess I must be absolutley ancient...Just you wait kiddos till you reach my age...Ha!
